Some things you have to learn the "hard way", meaning that you have to experience them yourself before you learn the lesson. Financial Independence and Early Retirement is no different. There is so much that I have learned in the past 3 years of being retired early, and I want to share some of the most important lessons that I have learned with you.
I also want to share the story of my journey to F.I.R.E with you!

My biggest learning is that capitalism is phenomenal at growing our wants and needs, making it insanely difficult to remember what truly makes us happy (and doesn't cost much).

That's a great point, it's really basic things that make us the most happy; friends, family, community, safety, good health, etc.

Be proud that you retired early and feel confident telling others!! That's a boss move. I just got back from traveling in California and my routine is jacked. I didn't take my vitamins, exercise or take my supplements. Or read. Just ate a lot and spent $

Haha yeah that tends to happen when you travel! It's a lot of fun, but also it makes you realize how important routine is!

Something that I have learned the hard way is that a lot of people do not want to hear about financial Independence and think it is crazy. For some reason telling other people about your goals in progress makes them feel bad. You really have to know your audience with this stuff. A lot of older people have told me that putting my money in the stock market is like gambling. It's okay because I know better and I just tell them how that gambling has been working out for me:)

Haha yeah a lot of people really don't understand much about it. That's okay, and we can't change everyones mind, but you being confident about your path and your financial choices will influence others positively! Even if it's not in that very moment.

Cool trip and photos! What was your transportation for getting to all those destinations? Do you have a video on travel hacks/tips to save money?
@OnCashFlow
@OnCashFlow 3 месяца назад
Mostly public transportation. We took Amtrak trains and local buses/subways. Once we got to Maine, we rented a car. I don't have a dedicated video to that (yet) but that would be fun to make! I often mention how I use credit card bonuses to get a lot of free travel, such as in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FG96YpPMSJ8.html

One way I get around the awkward "What do you do for a Living?" question is I printed up some RU-vid cards and I hand them out. People really get a kick out of that and it's a lot more prestigious than saying I retired at 58. Bret

Haha like some business cards?

I'm not FI - but yeah I can imagine that it's possible I come up with this strategy, and then change my mind wildly later! It's kind of disconcerting. I have lately been talking to my relatives who are eyeing their retirement. I am encouraging them not to buy a house - because they are considering where to live and I see that they are likely to change their plans a lot as they try things out. Keep options loose!

When we make plans, we think that we will be the same person 5, 10, 20 years from now, but that's far from the truth. We all grow, learn, and see the world differently as time goes by. The amazing thing about pursuing FI is that you have so many options and you CAN adapt and change later if you need to!

@@OnCashFlow Amen!!! The truth is people change and grow either way, but in FI you have those options to adjust your life to suit. In professions thats why people end up having so much dissatisfaction and turmoil when they aren't happy in the career their previous self chose and now they are stuck in.

1. Set aside a percentage of your budget for "anything." 2. Just tell everyone you're a "financially-free freelancer" and you work when want to.

My "entertainment fund" is sort of my "anything" part of my budget, but that fund can be used so quickly lol.
