Another big thing I thought about while editing was questions about pagers in school: My school was very laid back compared to what a bunch of kids will encounter I’m sure. You had your teachers that did not appreciate it and you had the teachers that said “turn it up!” lol, so just use your common sense and try to abide by the rules! I was actually used a bunch during my senior year because I did carry my fire radio to school with me but I left it on Page on a low volume so I would know when tones would drop. There were times tho whenever I would be called out of class for a medical emergency in the school. Following that, there were times I had asked for an ambulance to respond. Also, during fire alarm activations, the administration would tell myself and the other Jr’s who carried radios whenever they had planned a drill so we would know how to react. If there was no drill planned and was a legit emergency, we would take it upon ourselves to act as needed. Just some privilege of small town stuff!
I have been a junior fire fighter for around 3 months now, and I absolutely love it! All these things you’ve brought up, I had questions about myself. I have gotten to run quite a few calls, and it’s something I’ve absolutely feel in love with. Just the learning aspect of it all is amazing. Keep up the great work on your videos man, you’re doing great!
Nathaniel Texas I have always felt like everyone should try to find a way to give back to their community and this great nation we live in. Myself I chose the fire service, and I’m going to keep on proceeding through it and try to receive as much knowledge as I possibly can to become a more skilled fire fighter!
Nathaniel Texas we have talked a little bit before but where I am at I am talking to a firefighter who is in the works of starting up a junior program. I have been studying and studying so if it does get started up, I am ready to go. I’m 15 and look to be a career firefighter as well as a volunteer firefighter.
@@K4NFPRadioelectronics my fire department is a small one and they let juniors on at 14 but we cannot go in house fires but we can do different things my dad is a firefighter there so he shows me what I can do and I have friends on there that help me and show me things
@@kenziemalone3427 I am almost 15, and I want to be a Jr. Firefighter. Just, I don't plan on joining, until I am 16 because, I want to go on call outs.
Hey! Thanks for the video(s). I'm sixteen, and I joined my Department a couple of months ago. I'm with a department of around 15 members. I just wanted to say that their is a big need for firefighters altogether. Don't think that your too young and can't do anything. (that's how I felt.) You never know when you'll be put in a position where your vital to a life endangered, whether that be a fellow member or a stranger. Another thing is that your superiors will not push you into something that you can't handle. I have a lot to learn, and I'm enjoying being able to help my department. Thank you for the videos! keep it up. Stay Safe!
@@ernestrubin159 Depends on your department. My rural dept, I'm a volunteer firefighter. But a neighboring dept does the explorer program. I think that some dept's do the explorer program, and will have junior firefighters. I think your age and dept is what will really decide.
I get my driver's license in less than five monthsb and thinking about joining as soon as possible after that. and i just want to know if 1. I can have a part time job along with jr firefighter and school and 2. How long most shifts are for jr firefighter.
Wow my department only limited us from going internal as a junior. I was only a junior for around 2 months thankfully before turning 18. Our FF1 and FF2 classes took quite a while to get I was half way thru my FF1 cert in the year I was part of department. They only taught the classes at other departments throughout the county every so often. In my state lights were only courtesy so we ran em but couldn't run stop lights/signs etc. My department was pretty small and like you said if during the work day good luck getting a member to respond since I turned 18 just a month or two into my senior year I was allowed to leave school many of times I was the only other FF on scene fought a few brush and car fires while my Lt. ran the pumps. What I hated was running out of class to get to my truck only to get cancelled and walk all the way back to class. And my funniest embarrassing moment was when I first joined everyone told me that our pager on a certain setting would only vibrate so I had it set to vibrate during our senior awards ceremony on a Tuesday night. With my chief and Lt. Sitting in the gym my pager starts to vibrate and I go cool we got a call next thing you know the dang thing starts talking. I run out of the ceremony since I had already got my award only to get in the hallway and realize it was for our monthly training. Chief and Lt. Gave me crap for that for awhile lol. Good times. Miss the FF life.
hmm im a jr and im 14 its pretty fun and you learn a lot being a jr they do let you do a lot of the training actually aslong as its a company training course not a state training course
Im 13 im turning 14 in September this year and i want to experience being a jr and have a job of firefighting i hope i can achieve this. But can i do it when im 13 too?
I'm a 15 year old Jr firefighter lieutenant and to answer you're question no the jr firefighter program is only for ages 14-18 but you're about to turn 14 anyway so that's okay you'll be old enough soon. Hope the best for you and hope you get in
Since my department is smaller, I have a personal relationship with my chief and everyone on my department. Depending on how big your department is and stuff like that, you probably will.
well, it sucks when that happens... but I live within 5 minutes of my department. and blue lights (as what volunteer firefighters use in my state) definitely help to let people know that you are trying to get to the station.
In my department, the juniors can start at 14, but they are not allowed to go on calls regardless of age. They are not allowed to buff calls (or film or photograph anything, really). Technically they aren't even part of the department - they're like their own little subgroup, and they do not have access to any department building unless an advisor is present. Although they are allowed to attend all department trainings, parades, and certain other events, they have their own meetings, trainings and events themselves. They aren't permitted to take any Fire/EMS courses through an outside agency (and have the department pay for it or supply equipment, if it's out of their own pocket they can do whatever they want). A big tip I can give to juniors is unless you're allowed to go on calls, do not tell people you have fire/EMS experience. You don't, and you sound like a dumbass when you say it. -- Former Junior and current Firefighter
My department is somewhat the same, but our starting age for juniors is 16 and are allowed to go on calls, they just can't go interior or do as much as a full member can. They're not allowed access into the buildings unless a full member is present. Trainings, PR events, etc they can attend and courses like FF1 are paid for by the department. Also former Junior and current Firefighter
It is state law in WV that anybody that goes on the truck must have at least FF1, Junior Firefighters can only hang around the station. If the State Fire Marshals office catch a JFF on scene the person in charge can be put in jail.
If you go through Module Firefighter 1 and have Mod 1 you can legally get on the truck by WVFM Standards. Some Departments May take their own take on it however.
okay, this isnt always true, i know departments that allow their members to be on the first due engine and they are allowed to do mop up (over haul), now JR members should be able to do the same fitness test as the other firefighter, if they cant pass the fitness test they shouldn't be allowed to run calls, and also JR firefighter members wont be cutting on a MVA with a human inside, the members with extrication will be the ones cutting.
So 16 and I'm not in the best shape. I'm slightly overweight but I can lift and do work like a normal person I'm around 180, I do farm work AMD everything. Is there a physical requirement for junior firefighters
For my department, no there wasn’t. I’ll give this to you. I was 330lbs my senior year and was running full blast with my department. Since then, I’ve lost over 100lbs but it just shows that they obviously did not care until it came to accountability of others.
If it’s anything like my department, no matter of race, sex, or whatever you may be... the application process for all members are the same. I’m sure there is a fine line of discrimination somewhere if you were not allowed to join because of your gender.
