The USDA National Agroforestry Center, Forest Farming eXtension program, Virginia Tech, Cornell University and Paul Smith’s College have partnered to create a series of videos detailing silvopasture practices. We take a look at three different farms to better understand how the practice of silvopasture can be adapted to best fit an individual’s goals.

Yeah I was a USDA certified silviculturist for 20 years. I wrote many, many silvicultural Rx/Long Range (50 to 100 years) Plans.

How do you recruit stems into the canopy when you take the big ones out? I assume the livestock would browse the seedlings before they could grow.

I’ve had the same question. It appears to me that, one would need to stop pasturing for a couple of years to witness seedling growth. And I would assume seedling growth could be strong with all of the sun light hitting the floor.

I'm thinking about doing this in the carolinas or Kentucky. the project would be for diversifying my investment and part of my retirement projects in 10 years. currently in ny, but looking for land 10 to 20 acres. any advice?

Why wouldn't you pick trees to go, to stay, to burn and to mill yourself? It's pretty straight forward if you have a little common sense. Who needs the added expense of a "Forester"? Also if the trees are big enough and valuable enough for lumber, you can pay for the land itself with lumber sales. And/or pay for your own bandsaw mill with the proceeds of lumber sales. It's a wonderful experience to mill lumber! And very profitable. Why give it away!? Then you can do pasture, Silvopasture or Permaculture food forest and mix them as you desire! :)
