So, if you're considering bringing a new dog into your home where a cat already lives, or if you're introducing a new cat to your dog, here are 6 tips to help make the process smoother.
Tip 1: Choose a dog that has been cat tested.
First, it's important to choose the right dog. If you're adopting a dog, ask if he or she has been tested with cats before. A dog that is already used to cats will be more likely to get along with your feline at home. Keep in mind that some breeds or mixes may be more difficult to introduce to cats than others, especially those with a high prey drive such as terriers and hounds.
Tip 2: Create safe spaces.
Your cat will need a safe space to escape to when feeling frightened or overwhelmed. Set up high places or hiding spots, like the top of a bookshelf or under a bed, where your cat can retreat.
