This video is practical wisdom about 6 lessons learned AFTER retirement. Our retirement planning took many years, but everything changed after retirement for us. Each of these lessons learned changed our retirement and us in ways we never imagined. We learned how to pivot, continue our lives of learning, traveling the world, maintaining health, living with less stuff and much, much more.
▶️ We started our channel to inspire and share our world travel lifestyle, adventures, and optimistic outlook on life with others. After completing a two-year journey in our Airstream to see all 50 states and 51 National Parks, we left to travel abroad. We have downsized our possessions and sold our home so that we can wander about with only the things in our backpacks.
We love living on the road, traveling each week to a new location. We plan to travel extensively to every part of the world. Ours is not a slow travel lifestyle but rather a vagabondish one. The goal is not to check a country off a list, but to experience it by meeting new people, seeing how others live, and making new friends. We believe in laughing, loving, and living our lives to the fullest.
We are working hard to build a beautiful website where you can get travel information about the places we have been. In addition, we post blog articles to help you travel better. Our channel is a way of augmenting that effort, so sometimes we post videos about how to travel or a vlog showing our lives on the road as we do an activity or an adventure. We also post Shorts, so check those out, too. We hope to entertain you, but most importantly, we want to inspire you and give you the confidence to plan your own adventure around the world.

OMG! thank you for take time to answer me back, I understand your not financial advice i just want hear about your experience, and yes depend in each case, maybe for my buy a home now that I don't have any, will give me the advantage of get some equity in few years if i sell it, as an investment but in the other hand, the hide cost of own a home definitely have to be subtracted of the supposedly equity. Thank you again and be safe. I already sow more than the 50 % of your videos and are my first inspiration to live my retirement like you both, maybe some day we will meet you out there. Blessings

I'm not kidding when I say that the market crash and high inflation have me really stressed out and worried about retirement. I've been in the red for a while now and although people say these crisis has it perks, I'm losing my mind but I get it Investing is a long-term game, so focus on the long run.

I believe the retirement challenge will worsen. Many folks struggle to save due to low-wage jobs, inflation, and high rental costs. With homeownership becoming unattainable for the middle class, they won't have a house for retirement either. I think Dave Ramsey is mostly correct on this matter.

Agree with all of your points! Just want to add that it starts long before we retire with anticipating the financial needs. We didn’t retire with the million dollars some advisors say you need, but we were able to put enough by to do so much. We sold our primary residence at the top of the market which certainly helped finance our travels. Readjusting (pivoting) is definitely key!

So great to see the details for making good use of the Go Go years! As a person who moved from the US rust belt (Chicago) to Southern California in middle age, where a person decides to settle for the Slow Go and No Go years would make a huge difference in life, no doubt why the sun belt population is growing. It’s so nice to walk outside in January and feel the warm sun on your skin instead of being cooped up inside in the freezing cold. Near a beach with views of snow-tipped mountains, bike paths, short drive to forest hikes and more is life-affirming and you can keep a home and some stuff. As noted, you need to plan as it does not get easier to move somewhere if you are in your No Go years (I assume!).

After retiring we went cycle touring in Europe for a few weeks every year. Decided to move to France, after a couple of years there we moved to Switzerland. It has been a fantastic twenty years. Learning a new language, coping with the administrative stuff is always a challenge. We cycle, hike or ski every day are looking forward to the skiing season, we have booked five weeks in an apartment at Zermatt, and can already see snow on the mountains. You are absolutely correct, it is so sad that so many people waste their retirement.

Wonderful video! I wholeheartedly agree with all of your 6 truths. I've learned all of them as well in my past 4 years of retirement (I retired at the end of 2019 just like you). Another truth in retirement is struggling with switching from being in the accumulation and saving mode to being in the spending mode. You've been saving for so long in your life that it is surprisingly difficult to finally enjoy spending it. But retirement is the time to do it...this is what you saved all that money for! Although I've always loved traveling, living as a full-time traveler was not my first thought in retirement. But after a lot of self-reflection, I felt this was the direction I wanted to go. And it has worked out better than I ever could have imagined! Interesting that you mentioned eating salmon twice a week. That is exactly what I try to do, and I could eat it more often as John said. I'm enjoying following your journey as it somewhat mirrors my own. You've been an inspiration to me and so many others. Live your dream life while you can!

Excellent content. Very uplifting. My retirement dreams/goals are limited only by this one (I think major) challenge: I am in the go-go years (albeit with minor health issues) and my husband is in the slow-go years. But you know what, just make it work! When he needs to go slower I have learned to concentrate on my health and even do some things on my own, which can be very rewarding. Thank you guys!

I love the lesson about mastering the pivot! So many people spend decades planning and dreaming about the perfect retirement, only to realize later it won't happen that way. Without a back-up plan, they feel lost and disappointed at a time when they should be motivated to reinvent. Thanks for sharing both your inspiring journey and the lessons you’ve picked up along the way. At age 62 I’ve been “retired” for 7yrs (or more truthfully pushed out of a banking career by a nasty untreatable autoimmune condition). Like you, I’m working hard to slam as much as possible through my health window before it inevitably slams shut. My approach hasn’t been quite as bold as yours. I’ve held onto my family home for example, using it as a base camp from which to launch adventures that are more physically taxing than yours but shorter duration. This allows me to stay in closer contact with the various medical specialists involved in my care. I see my choice as self-limiting into a smaller box, or continually pushing to live at the outer edge of what my health envelope allows. Sure I end up in hospitals sometimes, but I’m still getting out there - often with my wife in our matching rain parkas - and still giving back to my family and community. What I love most about your videos is the cheerful, sunshiny, loving (with matching t-shirts no less!), minimalist on “stuff” but maximalist on “adventure”, reminder to keep pushing. Always keep pushing. Love your videos. Please keep ‘em coming.

Great video - I went part-time in September at 57. Spending the year decluttering so that my wife and I can travel. Already booked to go to Florida next year. The leap to retire early is scary and I am battling with "One more year" syndrome. Thanks for sharing

Excellent advices. My parents passed away at 76 and 77 years old. Even my father retired at 54 years old, my mother was always afraid running out of money. So when the market was down, she choose to stay at home. My parents loved travel with travel group ( fear with security..). My father get sick at 70 years old and the window for projects for them closed. So at the end, my mother had money and no possibility to enjoy. I don't want to do the same things. I know it will be difficult for me to spend my money because i work so hard for it and the education i received. But I will do a plan with my financial advisor to be sure to take the money every years to do my projects. And it start now even if my retirement is in 5 years.

I’ve really taken a lot of what you have to say about retirement planning and health etc. Going to do the death cleaning next , that may take a full six months I reckon. I’ve got stuff because I wanted to be comfortable but now I’m thinking other options. At 65, single, no family, ordinary health and a burning desire to be somewhere else….. you get the picture

As always, your videos are informative and inspiring. Thank you and keep up the good work! We are now into 14th week of traveling out of 30 weeks this time around. As you said, I still believe we are in the Go-Go yeas until 75, but my wife's hip situation has deteriorated and we may have to replan our years. She is considering a hip replacement surgery next year and we will see how it goes. Until then, we keep going ourselves. I have visited 103 countries so far and reach 104th in February next year, Lord willing.

I know how each person’s retirement looks different! I thought I would travel a lot more but I find it hard to go for more than 2 weeks at a time, I miss my grand baby too much😅. I chose to help babysit our grandson and I’m loving seeing him grow and taking care of him. I love watching you two and your adventures! Great advice and you're right...slow go/no go comes quickly and it can be depressing especially if you're used to traveling...but...you make adjustments, it's not the same but you can manage...and that's so much better than becoming stagnant. If you can move, you can go somewhere/do something...never just sit! Love the advice on techno...mistakes happen 😁 but stay up on things..your brain will thank you for it. 😊

Our daughter has taken her and our granddaughter is learning to help. We miss her so much, but she’s doing great. We spent most of our break with her and it was wonderful. We had thought we could travel with her, but when the CDC made the change and we couldn’t take her to Central America at the beginning, we left her behind and she was better off. It was very hard, but we see her every time we are home and knowing that she has a loving home is comforting. Not only is she our dog, but she’s also our granddaughter’s first dog. 🐶 ❤️ Thanks for asking. John and Bev

You are fortunate not having to struggle financially. Or at least that is how it seems. I'll check if you have a budget video. I did a similar thing and retired at 52. At 58+ now I am glad I did. Being solo is more difficult to do many things though. RV life is my choice along with a number of cruises throughout the year.

I know about the 3 phases- Go Go, Slow Go and No Go - a good reminder to get out there, even if it's just once or twice a year and travel as much as we can while we still can. How much consideration do you give to government travel advisories when you start planning your trips, particularly in Asia - do you strictly abide by them? If you don't, does that nullify your travel insurance?

Yes, get out there as much as you can, while you can still do it. We do consider the travel advisories, except during the pandemic, because they said don't travel anywhere!!! Sometimes they will just identify one particular border area in a country to avoid. In that case, we would stay out of those areas, but may still go to the country. So far, we have not purchased any travel insurance because of our fast travel style. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
