Have you seen the Jordan Peterson and Cathy Newman debate?
See for yourself how he deals with it and give us your opinion in the comments!
We've all found ourselves in conversation and felt attacked like we started off talking about one thing and then the other person twisted our words and before we knew it, we lost our cool, lost respect in their eyes, and maybe even acted like a jerk. Now, I don't normally do the same person twice in a row but this interview between Cathy Newman and Jordan Peterson was just too interesting of an opportunity to discuss how you can handle someone who uses subtle conversational tricks to bully you into looking dumb. So in this video, you're gonna see firsthand some of the most common tricks that people might be using on you and you're also gonna learn how to reverse those so that you can walk out of a kind of aggressive situation having earned more respect than you had going in.
So first off, to stop a conversational bully, you have to realize what's going on before it's too late. Now, typically, a person will reveal their aggressive attitude early on with their tone of voice and their word choice. Check out the rest that we will show in this video and how Jordan Peterson tackles them.
1:49 Jordan Peterson deals with so-you're-saying trap
2:39 Jordan Peterson deals with the "assuming the sale"
5:30 Jordan Peterson deals with the smash technique
7:08 But don't straw man the other person's ideas though
7:47 And visual imagery can also help
8:25 You can show them that they're already agreeing with you

That's basically most humans. Even myself. It's actually a survival technique to respond positively to those who support our ideology, while avoiding those who could present a threat. You might think we'd have moved on after thousands of years...

My tactic is to exaggerate, in a bombastic and exaggerated fashion, in the following way: "Oh my God! That's exactly right, boy you hit the nail right on the head, no doubt about it! It's like you're in my head or something! I mean WOW! You even got all the punctuation down with your inflection, and I have to hand it to you, wow, yup exactly down to the last molecule, a precise word for word rendition of not only what I said but what I meant by it, which by the way is exactly what I said. " Then I sit back beaming smugly at them because I called them a liar in a very sarcastic way. Nobody wants to argue with me anymore after that. Nasty, I know, but it has been several years since I realized there is no way to convert a fanatic so the best you can do is cut the interaction to a minimum and hope they die soon.

@@hees0009 That's just straight up confirmation bias though and doesn't save you at all from the ramifications of the Dunning-Kruger effect. You can be in danger of being manipulated and your confidence exploited before you even know it, you won't see it coming because you were so sure you were right and now you're too embarrassed to be wrong.

This. I had witnessed a classmate (who was actually a real b!$%# under the surface, which I clued into long before) go about doing exactly what this woman did to another classmate with whom I was on friendly terms with. This was in college, and the professor for that class had actually gone to the effort to get them to explain to each other clearly exactly what they were saying. Too bad the girl went and spread bull about her behind her back a day later in another class, all because she was an insecure piece of work (I pity her boyfriend, though). I really hate when people pull stuff like this because they're essentially putting words in your mouth that you didn't say just to get under your skin. It's one of the reasons *why* I absolutely dislike arguing with people, especially if they're never going to admit that they're the ones who are full of it.

This level of clarity and mental speed is not achieved by simple tips and tactics. This shows a long time of commitment to truth. When you commit to saying what you think is true, it will be easy to see clearly what's in front of you, see through people's bs, see through the games, call things out and quickly be able to straighten distorted arguments. Once you choose true, life will become the best adventure of your life.

I think that's the most telling thing about this 'interview'. Every question she asked of him was just a warped and twisted regurgitation of a valid point he'd made that she simply couldn't accept or understand. It was't so much an interview as a hit piece. You could tell in the way that she shotgunned questions she was reading from her tablet that she didn't care about answers, merely wanted to hurl accusations at him.

@replevideo6096
@replevideo6096 4 года назад
It really gives you the upper hand if you are laid back and patient when the other person is attacking you. It wrong foots them because they wanted to make you angry and it doesn't work. I had a boss do that when I was representing another worker's interest. I just sat back patiently and let him vent his anger until he ran out of steam. Then I calmly asked him if we could discuss the subject now he had got that off his chest. Needless to say I walked out of that room with everything I went in there to get, and the worker was delighted that I had won for him. If you lose your rag, you are going to lose the argument, and that boss knew that. So did Cathy Newman. If Jordan had lost his rag at any moment she would have made mincemeat out of him.

I love the bit about the risk of offending a person and how Jordan answers it, "In order to be able to think, you have to risk being offensive. You're certainly willing to risk offending me in the pursuit of truth. Why should you have the right to do that? It's been rather uncomfortable." (I also love the hilarious comments in here.)
@KayleeMcC
@KayleeMcC 14 дней назад
Well come on. Yeah, on a common sense general level most people aren’t walking around trying to offend someone. On the other angle, lots of people might be walking around waiting to be offended by something. This logic makes sense, but the people who are speaking about something aren’t out there speaking on a popular or highly debated subject because they wanna deal with offending someone. - as if thays there sole attention. Idk idk be offended, just at the mere premise that you’re out here defaming my character instead of listening where my logic is coming from . What even is that person whose offended argument against getting offended by something? Is it just “omg you offended me!” Like what do they seriously actually expect someone respond to that with lol it’s nonsense. But that’s also why it works so well on such a collective, larger victkm mentality level where they’re just actively looking for it at this point to someone remain relevant on their heads as if things are purposefully done and said about them. or to further there imvictim level

So I learned from an early age the art of letting the other person have my idea. I have since used this successfully in business and personal life for decades. I never listened to the put downs. If I did I would never create Art. Photography. Become an Author. All you have to do is act correctly and responsibly. she can write anything in a message but needs to be careful not to incriminate herself. therefore, more likely to phrase things politely. also, she will definitely try to employ others as spies. So don't discuss your family relationships or your opinion of family members. When it comes up, respond with stony silence. you can build 100 fruitful relationships outside of family.

To imply that by saying, "Gotcha," closed the door on a potential eye-opener on Kathy's behalf, after having stated she's committed 5 negative/aggressive conversational tactics is denial 'on command.' It was a perfect phrase for an aggressive, not truly listening just waiting for their turn to speak individual like Kathy. The lady isn't having a conversation. The “gotcha” was intentional. Jordan talked about this interview on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Cathy was super friendly and polite in the green room before airing, putting him at ease, then intentionally turned and tried to frame him poorly during it. She was trying to set him up to look like the straw man she was constructing. He hit her with that because there was no chance of her finding common ground with him. She was intentionally refusing to. It was a jab back at her to make her choke up on trying to use that gotcha tactic herself.

Watching this conversation progress actualy hilighted to me that I already do effectively recognise and confront these pitfalls and traps in everyday conversation without having to intentionally watch out for them as such .which comes naturaly if you really are listening to what others say to you and consider being precise about your wording before you speak .i think that it follows that if you practise trying to convey to people in conversation exactly what you mean then you do also look carefully at their wording to ascertain its validity in the context that they're being applied. The ones that you should walk away from and disregard are those who have to be right now matter the level of denial that they have to embed themselves in to do it .I know one person at least ,an older guy i work with who is so set in his own ways that he reacts defensively, to even rather shallow depth that I present in my points of view. That ."So your saying phrase "! Coupled with a strongly dismissive attitude. But it isn't about what I'm saying at all ,and is really about him choosing not to listen properly because he cannot cope with the complication of details .being drawn into discussing details that butt up against his frustration and impatience seem to be the true cause of the issue .

Not only can we stop generalising by simply! acknowledging not everything is so clack and white and using language to reflect that such as those/some/ most etc but even when this is not an option it is no justification for the use of extremely ridiculous, absurd not to mention highly judgmental not to mention wrong sweeping generalisations such as you saying all members of the left lack any principles! As for the political spectrum its complicated and their are no easy answers but I do know the extremes of both are bad also one party states have definitely been shown to be bad. / you can never entirely get rid of the concept of government force to handle necessary situations Ie you are forced to fund the military. police, fire services I mean things are sometimes needed for society to function its just about how much but stop acting like its just a concept that only will even exist with the left. also major concept of conservatives is that tradition trumps everything and that's a problem for me because traditionally slavery was ok/ the US was ruled by England etc tradition isn't good just by its nature, you have to judge individual things on its merit but people won't do that because their too busy picking sides.

Another way to describe their word choice. Notice that most of their main statements are directed at you, acknowledging YOUR thoughts, YOUR decisions. Good highlights in this video, you brought up some great examples. I noticed the same issues with salesmen, and I hate it when they do that. One of my main points to teach people when they "debate" points, is to listen to your "opponent". You will often find we share ideas, concepts and knowledge. Finding these shared ideas, are the beginning of reaching an agreement. Remember, debates are not necessarily conducted to "win". They are to find common ground. Convince the other side.

What genuinely surprises me is the comments that say how amazing it is how the good doctor carries the conversation. Is not interpersonal speech learned from our parents or in school ? I don't understand how people could not carry a conversation like this. What's going on with the younger generations??

He is exactly what Plato criticized over 2000 years ago. A person with little to no knowledge about certain things that still gets his reputation because people are blinded by rhetoric. I'm all in with him lecturing verbal self defence, if he stops talking about philosophical topics

Given the aggressiveness of the interviewer in this case, the "gotcha" was appropriate. She was not being sincere at all.

@@wade5941 “...I'm not Jordan Peterson and neither are you.” Absolustely correct. BTW, I worked as a mediator for 7 years and later I was employed as a cancer tech on a ward for end-stage patients [which involved many conversations about treatment & end of life issues wirh dying pateints and their families. When I was a parent I knew I wanted to raise my daughter so that I could effectively talk to her so she could listen and to effectly listen to her when she talked. I used to think she had a real problem when she left her room in a state of Defcon One. But actually it was *I* who had the problem. Her socks lying on the floor triggered my annoyance and anger. Clearly, had to be more aware of my own language. If I said “You’re a pig. You leave your clothes everywhere!” she would define herself as a pig. [When I leave things on the floor, then I’m a pig]. If I said instead, “I sure get annoyed when there are socks on the floor. Are you willing to help us both keep your room neat and pleasant to be in?” [Then she would think “Dad is frustrated”].

@Marcos 989 OK, let me just clarify, cathy Newman in my opinion is a fantastic journalist and a brilliant anchor. I've admired much of her work . Incredibly thorough, she really does her homework if I was a guest on the show, particularly a controversial guest, make no mistake I'd be shaking in my shoes. However in this particular interview she failed, I don't know what happened , I don't know. Let's just say I hope she learned from this experience. We all have our fine moments and our regrettable moments and this was one of hers. I'll end this by saying Cathy is still one of my favourite journalists she's also fair and tries to see both sides of an argument not all journalists do. I hope this clarifies my point of view
