This video came about 2 weeks too late for me, but luckily my Apple Watch alarm went off. My pulse was 135 and I was just sitting in a bench working in the garden. I had no idea heat affected the heart so much. It was 92F with a heat advisory of 110 due to high humidity. Lesson learned! Great public service with this video.
I almost bought it hiking in central America. Was in good shape, young and cocky. Went on a 6 hour hike despite drinking and barely sleeping the previous night. It happens fast! Luckily my companion that day was a nurse.
My husband has dementia and is a skinny guy. Not a lot of water storage muscles. We live in Tucson , he is 94, and this is a danger year round . Obviously a huge danger now, as he likes to go outside and walk his yard as the gardener he used to be. Confusion and increased speech problems.are alerts. If he drinks water without prompting, that is an alert. This an important presentation now especially for us older adults. Same big risk for younger children.
Luckily for me I had a Vietnam Vet who was working construction with me when I had heat stroke. I was so far gone, I had no idea what I was doing. I like to explain to my scouts an analogy is that heat exhaustion is like your AC running all the time and not being able to keep the temperature down enough. Heat stroke is like when the AC breaks completely. I like how you showed an example of how someone can be so confused.
Great video on Heat Stroke. It is a real issue. I have seen an employee suffer from heat stroke at the workplace, to the point where EMTs were called in. A job prior took precautions in preventing heat stroke by giving the employees some orange powder in a packet, where you just add water. This was done on hot days. Now I know it was just a drink containing electrolytes. These days I just carry a 14.6 oz Zwilling tea infuser and a 33.8 oz Zwilling bottle. Both are filled with ice water on hot days. The tea infuser goes with me, and the bottle stays in the car.
Here in Central Scotland, we are enjoying a balmy 63 Degrees F and it has been like that for weeks with above average rainfall. But after watching this video, I am not complaining!
Almost had one on Sunday. I had stepped out briefly on a very hot day and on my way back, stopped at the local grocers very close to my place. As I was about to pay him, i suddenly felt faint and nauseous and sweaty. I sat down under the fans, aaked for a cold, wet papertowel, and wiped my face, arms, throat and legs and feet to cool down. Thank God i was inside the shop as I could cool down and then walked back to my place safely. That was scary! I was perfectly fine after i rested a bit. Thank you for this vid.
I survived a 107.8° fever 20 years ago. It was over 105 for over 2 hours but I was too out of it to keep checking it. It was 107.8 when my husband got home 2 hours after I called him because my fever was 105. It was still 107.4 when the homecare nurse got there and done to 106.5 when we got to the ER. I don't remember the next 4 days after that. They were worried about heat stroke, but I survived it.
My husband is a nut when it comes to heat. He has put up a fence in our backyard once and he started vomiting and felt dizzy. I had to force him inside and give him some water and then i put cold wet towels on him at the back of the head and on his core body. But he didn't want to acknowledge that it was heat related. I finally got him back to a normal zone but i have to watch him like a hawk at this time of year.
Just came in from doing yard work in 90 degrees. I’m sweating a lot still and I feel exhausted , breathing kind of heavy. I’m 64. I’m doing better now that I’m inside and under a fan
Thanks to the actor/victim! I live in Phoenix and I’ve known this set of warning signs since I was a child but it’s always good to review them, especially this summer. Patiently waiting in the A/C for October. 😅
None of this happened to me. I started walking like a drunk and my eyes could not focus on anything. I was push mowing grass and stumbled my way to the water hose and washed down over my head. To this day I can’t go out and stay in the sun very long
I spent a year overseas my time in the service. It was in Kuwait and I did a lot of 24 hour shifts in that awful heat. I just got home from surviving 7 seizures in a row and a trip to UPMC Hamot. I always used to confuse them for just heat flashes.
Thank Doc ...very good.. important info 👍🏻👍🏻 I am grateful to God it's only 29⁰C here in my place but most of the time 26 to 27⁰C.. Take care everyone esp those who are effected by the heat wave in Europe or anywhere in the world.
Dr. Hansen, thank you for this PSA! This is such an important reminder to those of us that live in places where temps get dangerously high and we tend to brush off the risks of life-threatening heat. Stay cool in NV!
I had a heat stroke last year after drinking almost no water when it was SUPER hot and working all day. Had a very high 41°C fever and couldnt sweat... but water+salt and cool washcloths make me feel okay after a few hours
Heat stroke is no joke and quite scary. It happened to me a couple of years ago on a really hot day while filming for a short film outside. Even drinking plenty of water, my body was no match for the heat that day. I may have lacked enough electrolytes and salt in my system that day as well. Drinking too much water too fast could be fatal. I nearly passed out, but I got into a shaded area and layed down quickly so I could recover. I'm just glad I had enough water left to pour on my face that day.
Thanks for the info. Question: Can you have delayed effects of overheating? Yesterday a friend spent several hours in the sun in SE Alaska (temp in 60's °F, but sun felt very hot) clearing brush, but did drink around 5 large glasses of water. Don't know if she remembered her sea salt. She was tired when she went in, but nothing else was an obvious bother that she mentioned. This morning she felt bad and when she went to get up her vision spun so fast she nearly vomited. Her daughter gave her some kind of electrolyte solution. I am curious if a reaction can be delated by 12 hours.
Prwtty sure you saw evidence of this and/or drinking lots of water without replenishment of electrolytes & such. Possible blood sugar imbalance too might be important as well
Hi, from Queensland... I am likewise here, hoping I can prepare - am not looking forward to our late spring & summer temps especially because it the northern hemisphere they're not even into full summer yet! Come August... humidity & temps - stays hot through September...
These warnings are very important. I take both alpha and beta blockers and I shouldn't of stayed in my house that is getting rebuilt in the 100 degree temperature yesterday. I got back to my apartment after being in the house for 8 hours and drank a whole lot of water.
Great vlog, thx 4 not stretching it to 20 minutes for more ad time! I think cities and towns under a heat warning should require grocery stores to stay open overnight, and SHUT them down from noon to 5pm. (distributing electrolyte drinks free to seniors and parents of infants who approach the closed store) IMHO
Just a heads up about making assumptions. Think about how closely the symptoms of heat stress resemble those of drunkenness. Dont assume that someone who is vomiting has slurred speech and is staggering is drunk. Take the time to make sure they are ok. Also, be aware that there are a few MEDICAL conditions that make someone hard to deal with. Heat stress, low blood sugar, and traumatic brain injury among them.
Especially low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)... they can go quite crazy - I saw this happen last year. Had no idea he was near to duabetic coma: body was thrashing and lashing out, loud groans, grimacing and shrill moaning. Scared me half to death. Ambulance officers had hard time getting an IV in, two tries... finally pumped glucose into the big man even as he was almost still, because he was slipping away. Unreal how fast he revived to 'normal'.
In my case, the most common signs of my heatstroke, which in Chinese, the proper term used in Chinese Medicine is 中暑, and the most common condition in many patients is vomiting, talking too much and uncontrolled loud talking, and many other conditions that causes that increased influx of Excess Yang and exponentially inreasing Yin Deficiency. All those combined could lead to the complete inability to sleep at night and could lead to unintentially becoming a criminal and then being sentenced to prison for manslaughter, for instance
i don't recall hearing anything about global warming or climate change - only a medical review of the body's reaction to excess heat - the temperatures mentioned in the video are accurately measured and reported
