There is a new very informative video I uploaded called ALL About SCS Spinal Cord Stimulation and Pain I recorded on February 9, 2013. Check it out if you are considering doing a SCS trial or are going to be getting the SCS surgery. My experience is atypical but I'm a professional patient unfortunately and I'm also a big patient advocate for myself and others. I ask lots of questions and I stay well informed. So I do know a lot about SCS, back and nerve pain, fibromyalgia, acute and chronic pain. You are your own best advocate in the end. Feel free to leave a comment or send me a personal message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Stay strong. Take care and be well. ALSO: IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN FORMING A RU-vid COMMUNITY CENTERED ON PEOPLE LIVING WITH CHRONIC PAIN AND CHRONIC HEALTH ISSUES PLEASE SEND ME A PERSONAL MESSAGE BECAUSE I AM VERY INTERESTED IN HELPING TO CREATE THAT.

Nope, I didn't have the wrong idea, and nope, not whining, just sharing my personal experience. This isn't a competition. I'm hopeful that you get yours turned on soon & that it gives you a lot of relief. I had complications & couldn't use it for a long time, then had to have the whole thing moved from my right to left side, but its all worth it still bc on average it gives me 75% relief & when off it feels like I have an ax in my ankle & more. I don't participate in "man up" talk. Good luck!

Hi Gabe. My back pain is gone. I turned on the stimulator today for the first time since the operation and the contraption works well. The only pain I have now are the 2 areas they cut to install the stimulator and battery. I'm a rather thin man and it was difficult for the Doc to find good placement of the battery. Instead of it being implanted in my buttocks, it was placed just above my belt line on the left side. I'll keep you informed as things progress, and as always, my best to you.

Hello Gabe. Thank you for the informative posts over the course of your procedure and recovery. After being involved in auto accident (struck by a drunk driver in 1989) I've endured years of low back pain. I've had 2 lami's at L4, L5 with no results. I recently had the trial implant and can't wait for the real thing to be "installed". My very best to you as you continue to recover, and to all those who suffer with neuropathic or other back pain.

I am two and a half weeks after my implant. I am glad to hear from someone on how long it takes to get thru this. I am ok with this thing in me as long as it helps with the pain. (Beam me up Scotty) The pain at first was more than I expected. I really thought it would be a "walk in park" after back surgery....I was and still am mistaken. Thanks, you helped a lot.

Yes, insurance covers it because its Certified Therapist just like going to therapy at the hospital, which I have done many years without much good from it. I was tested and qualified for wheel chair back in Feb of last year and found out about fascia release in spring. I have been mobile and moving about feeling like a normal person since about June I would say. Its very, very strange for me. I am not to the level of exercising yet, but just glad to move freely and have mobility is a big deal.

Glad you found a good solution for you. I'm going to have to have my entire system moved from my right side to my left side any day now. Can't believe I will be enduring this again, but its worth it because the SCS does help my pain.

To answer your question. Yes, Joyce, it worked pretty well. The stimulating effect feels good and helps you not focus on other pains in the back area. The only problem was since this was a trial, if you moved a certain way, you had to adjust the stimulator so it would be comfortable and the controller looks old fashioned and it is another thing to lug around. I understand that when you have the permanent implant, the controller is smaller but still a little large. I understand that they have a rechargeable battery with a nice small control device. I asked about it and the rep told me it is not yet available. I really think they want to get rid of the ancient controller first. lol Mel

My permanent SCS is from Boston Medical. They do have a rechargeable battery; it's only slightly uncomfortable after the recharging but the battery itself is good for 10-12 years. I'm only 2 months post-op and still needs some fine tuning if I laugh, sneeze or cough (I get zinged on my right side).

I dont know if normal people we pass everyday in life realize the value of just moving around. I cant describe to you the pain levels I have been in, so I'm not coating anything when I say this is the only thing I have found that was real help to me. The doctors and therapy centers all but told me that I was done. I no longer use the cane either. I am growing more confident everyday. When I was doing deep tissue, I would bruise and tear my skin, so I know what you mean! I did it for years.

i haven't left, life is just enormous right now. may 13th will be 2 years on T so i need to make a long overdue T update, and i also need to make a SCS update and talk about my most recent health problems and hospitalization. ugh. oh, yeah, and we're moving across the country to portland in 6 weeks, so that's been a bit - i mean A LOT - overwhelming and time consuming. thanks for being so persistent buddy! you may just have gotten me to make some videos :) be well!

I've had horrible bruising from massage too. I'm pretty sure that most people do not and cannot realize the value of just moving around freely and easily, flopping onto any old couch, sleeping in any bed or position etc. I can definitely relate to and appreciate intense pain levels. I just had back surgery number 4 less than 24 hrs ago! I would like to explore myofascia release ASAP to try and prevent scar tissue. I'm very amazed by your experience and will send you a personal message later.

i'm going to do a SCS/health update this next week. it has not been an easy journey for me, but my experience is far from typical. the SCS actually pointed out a major health problem that i've been majorly struggling with - was in the hospital a few days about a month ago. anyway, i'll do an update soon. thanks for watching!

It's done, I had surgery yesterday. I lost a massive amount of weight due to serious illness, so the pocket that held my battery became way too big, the battery was moving/flipping around a lot, the wires were getting tugged, nerves/tissue in one area were causing searing pain that radiated out from the battery when I turned my SCS on as well as causing a painful sensation down my legs. Immediately post op they turned it on, all of that pain gone, sucks I had to have major surgery again though!

I really need to make an update video, thanks for final push I needed. My SCS has been complicated bc of other medical problems which I have literally just started sorting out in a forward direction. Have only been using my SCS regularly since most recent thorough programming session w neuromodulator abt 3 weeks. It works if the trial works is what I can say right now, so do the trial if you want a chance at more life. Mine is Boston Scientific, St Jude also makes one. Explore all options. Gabe

Hello again Gabe. Tday is March 6 and I had the permanant implant today, all went well. I'm still feeling the effects of the versaid and other meds and have not tested out the new unit as of yet. I will do that tomorrow and let you know how the "contraption" works. I hope you are doing better and as always, my best.

Also I might add that I have worked with pain management for years and taken all the drugs I could try. After a few months of fascia release now I am off all pain meds completely. I forgot to answer that YES I do have pain afterwards from fascia release like I have had probably 200 times from deep tissue work but its not as long lasting and my increase in mobility far exceeds deep tissue massages. If you would want me to ask my therapist about someone in your area then just PM your location.

I hate the drugs too! They do nothing but make me feel stupid and cause too many negative side effects. And, pain gets old as you know. I'm off most everything at this point, and once through the withdrawal I realize they none really help me that much. The temporary pain sounds worth it for such long lasting and life changing results. I stopped deep tissue massage because it hurts too much, doesn't help for more than a day and costs too much. Thanks for the hope!
@Zedie36
@Zedie36 11 лет назад
good news, and good luck! don't be terrified, it's not a major surgery, though obviously major because it's surgery. you'll be awake and on the road to recovery in no time. pay close attention to those two hours. i've personally never heard of predicting success from imaging and symptoms, only from trials, so make sure it helps you before you have something implanted and risk infection etc. hope it helps you, good luck!

Glad to hear your trial was successful! When do you get the real thing installed? I just had mine repositioned from my right side to my left side a week ago. With both of my implant surgeries I am too sore from surgery to run the SCS for a while so pain is in the lead, for now. Stay strong and best of luck with your surgery.

I'm from Puerto Rico. I have chronic sciatica and back pain after a fall in 2011 I have been to 19 doctors in PR and to John Hopkins, can't find the cause of the pain. Have done 9 epidural nerve blocks. I have Fybromialgia . I have 4 Tarlov Cyst on the nerve roots. Now they say no matter what the pain is from. SCS will treat it. I am researching and looking for testimonials to have a realistic view of the effectiveness. Tell me please how is the pain vrs before. Is it worth the effort. Bye

LeafFreedom I hope your surgery goes well, or went well, whatever the case may be. Best of luck with SCS! So many surgeries indeed. For me they’ve all been worth it. I have wanted to try myofascia release in the past but haven't yet. Glad to hear it has made such a huge difference in your pain and quality of life. Does insurance cover that treatment or do you have to pay out of pocket? Also do you find it makes you sore like a massage can do? I have fibromyalgia and in general find massage to be painful. Curious if you have any thoughts on my questions, thanks!

Which company are you using? They all work significantly different yet in essence the same. Did the trial work well for you? From my experience, both personal and hearing from others, that it truly comes down to how well the trial works. I guess it's helping me enough to be going through surgery tomorrow to have the whole thing moved from my right side to my left side lol! Some temporary acute pain is worth it for the long term chronic pain relief. Good luck!

John Bodmer I understand being nervous, but there's no need. It's a very painful surgery. I've had nineteen surgeries and SCS ones are by far the most painful. But it's just a few weeks or a month and then it's gone and hopefully we'll worth it. I'm just now six and a half weeks post op from having two St. Jude SCS systems implanted. It was rough but I'm through it all. I plan to make a new video soon. Good luck and take care,

I did great for the first 6weeks but now it's not covering like at first. it's been 2 months and a week and for some reason I am taking Tramadol 3 times a day so they are looking at the CT scan now to see if the paddle has moved and if so he is going to revise it will let you know but it is took at least 40 % of pain away I wish they had this 8 surgeries ago are you in DC I see the metro that's where I am.

how are you doing after surgery? taken it for a test drive yet? i had to have a major revision surgery on mine two weeks ago, had the whole thing moved to the left side, 3 incisions, and the old battery pocket site is filled with a massive complex hematoma which hurts a lot. i still can't turn my scs on, just too much for my body. i need to ease myself back into it. hope you're well on your way to much better days!

i'm not sure how long you'd be out of work. i wasn't working at the time of my surgery. everyone responds to surgery and surgical pain differently. this was a really painful surgery for me and a tough as hell first week, and, this was my third back surgery that year so maybe that was part of it. a lot of people report similar pain as mine, though. and i have a paddle which means i wasn't allowed to lift anything over 10 pds for 6 weeks so that the paddle adhered according to original settings.

+Stillmin Stilldoit sorry just seeing your comment. i had boston scientific's newest model, but had it removed last fall so i could get some necessary MRIs. but i'm getting reimplanted with St Jude's newest model using burst stimulation as soon as i have an injury and some illness stabilized. if you haven't pursued it by now i'd highly recommend it. and i agree that smoking green helps with pain, but SCS does too. they're actually a great combo, and the cannabis helps lessen the sensation which can be annoying at times when you'd rather feel your body naturally but without pain. let me know if you have any other questions. be well!

Harold Williams Good luck, hope everything goes well and recovery is smooth. I can't answer the work question because I'm on disability, but if I were working, I can't imagine going back to work any sooner than 3 weeks based on the same bad level of post op pain I've had each time I've had the surgery. No bending, lifting or twisting for 6 weeks is a very important part of recovery and healing! All the best to you!

Sheldon Beaver I absolutely would, and have, several times now. For lots of complicated reasons (keep meaning to make a much needed update video) I’ve had to have multiple revision surgeries and had it completely removed out of desperate need for MRIs after sustaining a traumatic injury. I’m now running burst stimulation with St. Jude, so it covers pain without the parasthesia. It’s been worth all the surgeries to keep the pain management option, but damn, doesn’t matter how many times I have the surgery, if they do any bone shaving on the lamina which they almost always do, it’s downright brutal pain, but passes within two weeks.

+Cloud Dweller sorry for the late response. if SCS is turned off then pain is higher because the SCS is off. i had a botched first surgery and had to have the whole implant removed, so my pain and experience was certainly real. everybody is different! my weight has nothing to do with SCS also. i've dropped a good 125 pds since i made this video, more at one point. hope you've been able to find some success with SCS by now. hit me up if you have any questions. be well!

+Cloud Dweller so sorry to hear that my friend! stay strong. i know what it's like, to both be in the fetal position on the couch and to want to throw in the towel. a day at a time. if the pain pump didn't work then definitely look into the spinal cord stimulator or peripheral nerve stimulator. also cannabis really helps with pain if you have access to it. hang in there!

Barclay I've had 19 surgeries. SCS surgeries have been a quarter of them. I'm six weeks post op double SCS implant surgery. Unbelievable pain. You don't know me and are just trolling around the internet apparently trying to be a jerk and bully. If you don't have anything nice or supportive to say, don't say anything. Ever heard of being kind? Hope you have a happy holiday.
