The weather is very unstable this week as storms come and go. In the meantime I'm making progress with the chicken coop and work on the retaining walls. I borrow Lorenzo's Defender for a night out camping. And Ollie is visiting again and helping out a bit.

Great video Martijn. As a farmer with 150 layer hens I would say that your chicken coop looks good. However, there are two things I would recommend. Chickens don’t like it when it’s drafty, and considering you live on a mountain, I would suspect that might keep them from going outside. If you can find a way to at least cover up two of the sidewalls, so that they have a corner where they can lay even when it’s windy. I would also recommend you making sure the chicken coop has access to electricity. A lamp to keep water frost free and also keeping chickens warm will help them save energy to lay eggs instead of having to stay warm in winter. We had -22C this winter and those heat lamps really came in useful. Eggs need a few hours of below freezing temperatures to freeze so you don’t need to worry about heat in the nest boxes. Your videos and lifestyle are very inspiring. Thank you for sharing. Good luck.

Laura from “Garden Answer” puts up plexiglass inside her chicken coop during the winter months. There is a small gap between the walls and roof for ventilation. She also uses heat lamps.

Perhaps some battens on the outside to minimize drafts?
@Vilhelmnilsson
@Vilhelmnilsson Год назад
@@iu.5146 yea that’s a good idea. I would even use some kind of see through polykarbonate for the actual ‘box house’ that he seems to want to keep the chicken in. Otherwise it’s going to get very dark in there and they need natural or artificial light to wake up to in the morning and it’s also the amount of daylight they get which effects their egg production. In large scale production they use artificial light so the layers produce longer, otherwise the egg production naturally goes down during winter. So some source of natural light in there might also be a suggestion.

A tip for anyone finding an injured or concussed bird like, this, if you put it in a small dark box(with a towel over it for a lid) it will be less stressful for the bird and they tend to make a better recovery after a couple of hours or so - that's been my best method to help them in the past - well done Martin for trying to save the Robin and the care taken.

Some very emotive stuff this week Martijn. The robin who died, they're very aggressive little birds, especially with other male robins. He's seen himself in your mirror and thought a rival was on his turf! This can happen quite often with windows too, if they can make out their own image. He looked badly hurt, maybe he'd broken some bones. At least you made him more comfortable, you're a good man Martijn. When you were up at dawn trying to safeguard the camp, you looked so tired and beaten...but you bounced back and achieved so much with Ollies help. Once the cabins are habitable things will be more secure and the weather will not be such a worry. It's hard watching you battle the elements, but I can't tell you how inspiring it is to watch you creating your dream, against very difficult odds. Thank you for sharing with us.

Hi Martijn. I am a young carpenter from Canada that has been watching you since you pretty much first started this adventure. It is really interesting the way you frame and build things compared to us and I love watching your videos every Sunday. If I could give one piece of advice would be to invest in a higher quality hammer. Seeing you take 8-10 swings to put in a small nail with that hammer makes me cringe. I am not sure what you have available in your region but one with a bigger head so you have more surface area to hit, titanium head so it is nice and light, and a longer handle so you can put more force into it will save you hours of swinging and save your hand from Carpal Tunnel. Companies like Stiletto, Vaughan, and Boss make really good quality titanium head, wood handle hammers which I think you would love. But in my opinion Martinez has the best quality hammer you can buy.

The last two videos have been AMAZING. Some of the photography transitions deserve awards. Incredible work. Having a friend who lends you his car is a true, true friend. Cherish that person and NEVER do him wrong. Friends like that don't come easy. I wish I had half of Martijn's stamina. I wish I was young enough to offer some help. This project requires some serious manpower. I always wondered about the smells, even how Martijn smells. Judging by the videos, it doesn't seem like he bathes very often. And here he addresses the smell of his boots, his feet. I LOVED this bit of intimacy. Martijn has quite the shoe collection. But what will he wear to a wedding? I also marvel at his tool collection. One accumulates a lot of "stuff" on a project like this. I can't imagine the stress of trying to protect it all from the threat of a bad storm, and then filming all those stressful moments. I LOVE this channel.

Set the tripod at one good spot, secure the camera on it. Film the night shot/sequence you want. Go pick the camera up, but leave the tripod in place. Next morning, wake up early, secure the camera on the tripod once again and start filming the day shot/sequence. That easy. Also, in the edit, he most likely applied a fade-in/fade-out transition on both sequences, so the transition between the two shots would be smooth.

You feel more secluded on your side except for those storms and I am glad you are making progress on the cabins as that is the way to go I feel and get shelter and warmth and protection and those stones allow that. Good footwear is so important and wool socks and wool jumpers and good waterproof coats to keep you warm and dry. To make the hens "understand" where to lay eggs, fake wooden eggs are often used; hens lay eggs where it happens, but instinctively go to lay where there are other eggs. This way you can decide where you want them to lay (especially at the beginning, if they get into the habit of laying on the ground they will hardly change over time)

It is far easier to take this out and wash down rather than having to scrub out the base of a coop when a clean out is needed. It drys so much faster too. Those are gonna be some very lucky chickens! So glad Ollie was there to help in the cabin. He's a machine! Also, that final drone shot was spectacular and stunning. I was well and truly gobsmacked!

I am always amazed and spellbound with the able and moving forward energy that you are capable of Martijn. I have heard that Mother Teresa when asked how she did not become overwhelmed would say she just did one thing than another and another. This is something that does not come easy for me this life and I am encourged by watching this and so many expressions of talent in your videos! Thank you!

31:47 When Martijn Doolaard enters through a forgotten door, in a forgotten home; when Martijn Doolaard climbs the mountain, and passes through the legendary door, through a legendary holograph, from one world to a new one, from one century to another - from a fantastic atmosphere to a phenomenal, indescribable and unmistakable atmosphere of a king's son - then is reflected a soundscape, as the door opens - a soundscape unlike anything else, not ever. A sound image of the highest value. Listen again. Listen carefully.

Disclaimer: It was a rich text on a poor picture as such, but the idea behind my caption was certainly good enough - right? We hope you enjoyed reading it.
