Great presentation. I've been using the wired trackball for a dozen years and love it. This seems like a worthy upgrade with the tilt feature and the precision setting.
Been using an M570 with my laptop for quite a while, and got hooked. Went back to a conventional mouse when it died. Got this MX Ergo to replace it. For daily tasks a trackball for me is a much better companion than a conventional mouse. It just feels so much better, and for precise work this one especially is really good. Your thumb will hate you the first few days, but after that, you'll love it.
I've been a PC gamer since the first games came out on PC. Been using a trackball for MANY years. Like some people have said here, it is GREAT for gaming! Much better than gaming mice and I have used a couple of those. I'm placing an order for this new Logitech trackball asap, as I have been waiting for years for an upgrade to the M570. Good gaming to you all!
@@vu_derArchitekt Not the original poster but I too use the M570 for my gaming (it's broken and I need to buy something new). When using a "normal" mouse what does your thumb do? This trackball uses the thumb to move the cursor around. See if you can go to a PC shop and try it out. I find it easy to use the thumb to move the trackball while keeping my index and middle fingers on the left and right mouse buttons respectively. You get used to not moving your fingers when you move your thumb.
Thank you for actually using the mouse and showing how it works. Most of these videos just show pictures of the product and don't show someone using it. That helps a lot.
For real... It's because they want to sell the product (even when they say they're not sponsored) and the main drawback of these mice is how un-precise they are compared to traditional mice (mouses)... so they prefer to highlight all the advantages instead.
I am a computer aided drafter and had to switch to a trackball because of pain in my shoulder. I have been using the M570 since it came to market, now, I am looking at upgrading. Thanks for the review.
I use a computer 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week, and have for almost 40 years. I do really like the MX Ergo. It has drawbacks. Short battery life for me (need to charge once a week). No storage location for the unifying receiver (but I never unplug that so don't care). Standard USB charging instead of USB-c - but don't really care. The major drawback right now for me is that it bricked yesterday after less than 2 years. I've used the older M570 ones for far, far longer than that. But this one is more comfortable. I've never had hand cramps (like I do with a regular mouse) nor any other pain issues. And never had carpal tunnel. And the time I had a pinched nerve in my neck, the fact that I could pick it up and put it and my forearm on a stack of books was great and allowed me to keep working while physical therapy eventually took care of the pinched nerve. Just wish it hadn't turned into a brick yesterday.
I use my computer around 3-5 hours a day and I only need to charge it every other month or so. Also for me the M570's mouse2-button broke (it occasionally double clicks or doesn't click at all) after using it for 9 years but otherwise no trouble. After it broke I bought an MX Ergo that I'm still using after 5 years, nothing wrong with it. What happened with yours?
The toggle button is actually to switch between the TWO bluetooth channels. and you can have active at the same time. And the devices DO NOT need to be on the same need network. You can set up the FLOW function which allows you to arrange the two different devices synced to the mouse like displays. And move to the edge of one devices screen cause it to automatically switch to the other device on the second blue tooth channel. if you want to swtich to the 2GHz reciever you simply plug it in.
I switched to an M570 maybe four years ago and it absolutely helped my wrists. I now need to replace that one and can't wait to try the tilt on this one as that was definitely the one complaint I had with the M570.
Thank you for the thorough review and showing it in use! I'm concerned about thumb pain over time using a purely thumb driven trackball, any of that for you MW Tech?
Great video, mate. Are you still using it? How do you find the accuracy of using a trackball on graphic design/video editing software that require fine control?
I've gamed with a trackball for years and can't imagine using anything else. There is something intuitive or natural -at least for me -about the thumb-ball to head motion compared to moving arm and wrist that just feels right.
I game FPS with a trackball since the first model from Microsoft, it's very precise when you are used to it. I also used everything from Razer, Steelseries and Roccat Kone and I still prefer Optical Trackballs. Minimal hand movement and accuracy is better with trackballs, you just have to practice a bit more with it tho. I was a beast with the Microsoft Trackball Explorer back in Rainbow Six PC, Ghost Recon and Battlefield 2. Too bad they don't make high quality long lasting mice like those anymore...
Very nice presentation sir. Thank you for your time and effort. The trackball is a specific technique for people with specific tasks and/or specific issues. Choosing a trackball is primarily a matter of convenience not popularity or being an enthusiast. Well done with the drawbacks
I use the MX Ergo mainly for my CAD applications. Hard to switch back to a normal mouse after using it for so long now. All those extra arm movements. Paired it with the MX Keys. You get extra options using the Fn button.
Hows your experience using Ergo for CAD applications drawing 3D structures.. i have some wrist pain and forearm pain and was thkining of buying the ergo. Any recommendation on ergo?
@@anandms4349 Ive been using the Ergo and its predecessors for years now without any problems. Even bought one to use at home. But for real 3D drawing I would still suggest using a 3D mouse or Spacemouse. I use that one for my work in Inventor.
I was using both 3D mouse and Cad mouse from 3D connexion with my old organization. But I am planning to use trackball now as I feel them as more ergonomic design for my hands. How do you compare them?
@@SpinelSunSupMay Not a problem. The MX has no external sensors/laser. The ball is in it's own cradle wich also contains the sensors. Only need to clean those at a certain point because grease and dust tend to end up on them. .
I had the original way back when, the white model with the red ball. The problem was the normal grease and grime from your fingers would transfer to the ball and then to the inside of the device causing skipping and a general decrease in performance, requiring regular removal and cleaning of the ball and the whatever was contacting the ball on the inside of the device. This is more a niche product. I went back to the then top of the line MX 1000 and was happy. Daily drive is now an MX Master, couldn't be happier.
Have had a M570 trackball for years, but it doesn't work well on my iMac (the dongle always requires being unplugged and plugged back in to work). Was interested in this newer version because it uses Bluetooth and has some ergonomic changes... How does this compare to a vertical mouse (such as the one sold by Logitech)?
I'm playing grim dawn and u have to hold the shift button on the keyboard to keep the character from moving is there a mouse that can replace the shift key
used a logi trackball for over a decade , when it died , the only option was still the exact same device i bought way back , mice had evolved , higher dpi , more buttons, ergonomics better etc. so i switched back to a mouse not wanting to get a device that was released 12 years ago at that point, mailed them , asked when they were going to show some love to the trackball considering they are one of the few that build em, no updates planned, One month after getting the mouse. a new model trackball came out.... this is now again more then a decade ago , had several mice in that period and never looked at logitech again , this one might bring me back when my current mouse breaks
Thanks for the review. I've been using the Logitech M570 for a couple of years now doing data entry and when it dies I'll consider the MX Ergo. I wouldn't go back to a regular mouse.
It's a great upgrade. He doesn't talk much about materials or weight, but the MX Ergo is MUCH heavier than the M570, which helps it stay on your desk even during maximum clumsy. Also, the palm rest is rubberized and the entire mouse feels cool to the touch like an object with a decent amount of mass should. Additionally, the mouse ball has a smoother feel to it and closed ball design acquires gunk a lot more slowly so you should only have to clean it once or twice a month, even if you eat at your desk everyday.
@@smexehcougah3 but it's still a mission to get the ball out. Stick with the m570, you can use your finger, you can't with the Ergo. Stupid oversight. I gave my Ergo away for this annoyance alone.
@@howardlam6181 Yea I forgot about that silly omission. Honestly don't know what Logitech was thinking when they designed it. Could have been awesome now it's like / hate. Yet SO many reviewers deliberately ignore these gross faults.
I can't get Logitech Options to run, also is there anyway to modify the function of 1-2 switch button? I don't use two computers so I wish I could use that button for other function like we could do highlight and search on MX mouses. I wish this mouse had one or two more customizable buttons.
You´re right. The MX Ergo is a failure. You can connect the mouse to different computers and use it to scroll websites, but you cannot use it to perform basic functions like keyboard connectivity, etc. Don´t bother with it.
Great video. I've been using trackballs for over 20 years I think. I've been using the Logitech Trackman. I love it. I have three altogether and one finally died. I started looking for another one but found that they are not available, so I have to get another model, which is how I found your video. I didn't particularly like the ball on the thumb. The Trackman has the ball on the right side where my fingers do the moving. Anyway, great information. Just what I needed.
I used a trackball back in the 1990s. The ball was inside the mouse itself. Unlike the MX ERGO it was actually an advanced mouse you could use to connect with the keyboard on your computer.
There's definitely a learning curve and specific usage/user type but I personally like it! I needed one so that I don't need to move my hand (ie with laptop on the couch and limited spaced work table). I kinda like it so far!
Love this mouse. The center button actually toggles between two computers. Great so when I go out with the laptop I don’t have to re-sync the mouse. They also come with a base that tilts it further which to me is very comfortable.
I can't believe you used the tip of your pen to take out the ball. Also, if you purchase the Ergo Plus version, for the same cost you get an extra pad that the mouse sits on which changes the angle to 30degrees as opposed to the 20degree.
I've been a trackball fanatic for years. I am one of the "5%" that use it for gaming as well. It is 10000% better for gaming for me. Very interesting to hear how little people use these mouses. They are truly the best type of mouse. This specific mouse works well for me in the past 24 hours ive owned it. My point is, if you have and like trackballs they work fine for gaming that is not a drawback imo.
Now I understand the tilt feature. Now I know how to change the speed of the cursor. Nice. After five weeks my mouse died, but now I know how easy it is to recharge. I should have watched your video before using the mouse. Love the trackball.
I heard that the M570 was a failed product as it only lasts a few months before the switches starts to fail. ie double clicking or not clicking at all. How was yours?
I personaly play with a Trackball since 13 years and for me its so much better then a normal mouse. But i must say, you need to use the mouse a long long time before you really can play with it.
Hey do you have any trackball mouse recommendations? And do grips(palm/claw/fingertip grips) with a normal mouse make a difference when switching to track balls? If it helps with recommendations, I use a claw grip with a regular mouse and play league of legends more than FPS games. I’m afraid of developing CPS so I’m considering at trackballs
@@catsoffon so, personally I would recommend the MX Ergo because it is adjustable and has a very high quality. Unfortunately, I do not know any direct "grips" but with a trackball mouse you should always try to put the whole hand on it. but basically you can always use them the way you like best. And yes, it makes a difference if you switch to a trackball mouse. Your grip and your mustle-memory will be a bit funny at first, but just like everything in life, you get used to it. For me, there is no chance what so ever, that I switch to another mouse then a Trackball. And I need to say, in all the years i´ve got like 10 different trackball mouses and everytime a new one comes out, they will be bettter then the one before. I hope, I could help you a little bit and sorry for my bad english, I am not from the US XD
Hatchi19008 Thank you very much for the insight. I’ll definitely consider switching to a trackball even more. Your English was well written by the way! It wasn’t even obvious it’s a second language of yours haha
I read your question and just ran Lightroom to check. It's really like a regular mouse. If you just click a slider and use the trackball, it won't do anything (you'll just see the mouse arrow go where you trackballed it to). Only when you click a slider AND hold the left mouse button, then you can use the trackball to move the slider back and forth.
Thanks - a useful review. If you do have some way to process the sound so it doesn't sound muffled, that would definitely be good. I actually tried cleaning each ear with a cotton bud because I thought something had blocked them, but then realised it was definitely the sound from this video. ;-)
An excellent review, thanks for the video... I am planning to buy this, but is it compatible with Mac OS?? How about the bluetooth ? Can this be used with MacBook Pro with bluetooth ?? I really need to use that as I have limited USB. Is the trackball portable enough?? I have difficulty with using the laptop trackpad. Also does the ball fall out?? The ball in my Kensignton Expert Trackball drops out, that is big drawback for portability.
I ordered the new model today. I have the old model. I carried it in my backpack and the ball doesn't pop out. And it is cheaper than this one. Only drawback is that it is not Bluetooth, nor has a rechargable battery
I will say the battery life is no joke. I used the one I have for 6 months before it needed a charge. Used daily for AutoCAD, inventor, etc along with daily usage.
Great review, however, I have to say, I have been using my Logitech Trackball mouse M575 for years, and sometimes in gaming: EVE, Star Conflict, DOTA, 0AD, Minetest, and Veloren. On macOS and Linux. My son (5 yo) prefers using the trackball mouse rather than the typical gaming mice I have. It is not good in FPS, but it is ok in several games like space games.
I know this is an old video. I love this mouse and bought a new one. Anyone know of a way to clean the pad on it? Mine has started to not feel so great.
How is the copy and paste function as if I want to select a large number of text how would I do it
3 года назад
You can do infinite scrolling by using the trackball... just click on the center button and scroll with the trackball freely... then click on the button again, or the left button and you're back to normal...
Been using M570 over 7 years I think. Maybe it´s time to upgrade! it would be nice to control 2 devices with 1 mouse! My only complaint with trackballs is that you have to clean the ball from dust often :(
I have not felt any pain with a trackball, only have pain when using a normal mouse for a while in one sitting. Everyone is different tho, so do you feel pain when using a normal mouse too, or is it only with the trackball?
Many years ago I developed bad pain in my thumb with one of logitech's similarly designed right handed trackballs. I'm guessing the same would be true with this design. Too bad they're dropping Mac support for their marble mouse which I have been using for decades. I find it's ambidextrous design most comfortable.
With gaming, it definitely depends on which games you are playing and frankly just getting used to the mouse. I have been able to be very successful with FPS and definitely with other games that don't require any twitch controls.
I just bought the MX Ergo Plus from my local computer store today. After using the trackball for a few hours, everything is great except for one thing. I noticed that if I connect the charging cable to the trackball while I am using it, I would get electric shock when I touch the trackball. This happens several times; however, if I disconnect the charging cable while I am using it, I wouldn't get electric shock from it. Not sure if that's just me got a lemon or it's a design flaw.
I get electrocuted when a smartphone is connected to a laptop via the Logitech cable (from the MX mouse). I speak on the phone and I feel an electric discharge in my ear. Try changing the wire.
I just left an extensive comment here. But, except for the brick situation, I would gladly spend the money to buy one again and I have several M570's for my other non-work computers.
IMHO: Trackballs work much better than a mouse to control your DAW in multi-track recording setups along with a good MIDI controller... his one is no exception !
Guys could you tell me that is it suitable for Gaming developing? I'm about to do a lot of stuff like modeling and coding in Unity3D and I really want to know the experience of using a trackball. Appreciate!
Can this manually be set to use one computer at a time? I have a laptop for work and one for home and nearly never use them at the same time. I'd like to use it for both computers, but don't want it scrolling off the screen and trying to connect to the other computer.
Maybe a late reply but yes, thats how i use it. Just press the top middle device switcher button and it connects to the other device, no re-pairing needed. Logitech software is also not needed in that case.
in the beginning your muscles are bit sore, but like many exercises you do again and again your thumb will get used to it. I find the learning curve and initial soreness worth it to relieve and reduce the pain of carpal tunnel. Maybe i'm a little bias. Personally, after getting used to it, I've played a 10 hour MMORPG marathon and not had a problem.
Used the earlier version of this for years. Its the ultimate couch potato surfing device. New is nicer more functions and now the price is down. Also no numb finger tips from the mouse pad . Better than a mouse or track pad by far.
Track balls have their uses.. I use mine to watch videos from my couch. I find mice don't work well on couches., especially if your laying down. I would not put one on my normal computer, no way!
It's a pitty logitech pretty much has a monopoly on these type of trackballs. They're generally pretty good, but they're expensive and they wear out pretty fast. Also, don't expect the price to decrease ever. The M570 now is just as, if not more, expensive than it was when it came out ~10 yeas ago. (outside the US, at least don't know how the prices have developed there)
i am crushing diablo 3 on trackball and its quite pleasant. I can imagine any RTS may be easily playable as well. That being said, shooters are probably a no-go
I love using trackball thumb mice for gaming. So fast at turning/aiming great for twitch shooters. The precision mode is awesome when you need to snipe and have more control. I don't know why gamers don't like trackball thumb mice.
Not seeing much of a difference between this and the M570. A $50 price difference for a built-in rechargeable battery, 20 degree tilt, and bluetooth? I have a M570, I use it for my music writing, it sits on top of my Motif XF8 synthesizer so I can use Cubase 10 Pro and Vienna Symphonic Library (among other music tools) and the only minor nuisance is replacing a single double A battery once a year.
Does anyone have any insight on the feel of the mouse when it's sideways, since that's the main reason I'm considering this mouse? Seems like most reviewers don't seem to be at all interested in that feature.
If you're not used to it, yes. You're kind of moving the problem of joint strain from your wrist to your thumb in this case. This mouse is kind of a middle ground for people coming from a more traditional mouse and want to try a trackball, because the button operations are very familiar. I think for ergonomics, the best trackball mouses are the ones that can be operated by your whole hand, like the Kensington SlimBlade Pro. This has an even steeper learning curve though, as the left/right button placement is also very different, but it doesn't put strain on one single joint as with this or a traditional mouse.
@@bartjoboy I bought and returned it already. I use SolidWorks 8 hours/day and I found it not precise enough and putting a lot of strain on my thumb. I have to say, for casual use, like web browsing and such it felt great. I think I'll end up giving a try to the 3dConnexion CAD mouse.
@@darkrulier Yeah it's really personal what kind of mouses work well for you or not and it's really something you need to experience and try out for yourself. :)
I've never had carpal tunnel. I adopted trackball many many years ago. I have worked on a computer 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week for the last 40 years. I find this a very comfortable trackball to use.
I totally disagree with you. Gaming with a trackball is 1000x better then any old mouse...even the gaming ones. So its NOT a negative point towards it. Its more precise and you aren't moving your hand all over the place like a fool trying to turn around.
