Rare Sixties Girl Group, out of Chicago 1960 The Duchesses Will I Ever Make It B side to Every Boy In Town ( Chief Records C-7023 ) Written by Jackie DeShannon. This label was owned by the singer / songwriter and record producer Mel London. I also have their other single "You Told Everyone But Me" and I don't think it's on RU-vid yet. That and the B side "Why" were also composed by Jackie. These recorded as The Four Duchesses too. This is probably the strangest tune I've ever posted on here. When I heard the first few lines I didn't think I was gonna like it, but it's grown on me a little. It's definitely different and an oddity for sure. Though it reminds me of The Shirelles "Tonight's The Night" and "Mama, Here Comes The Bride" in parts. Also I can hear touches of Sam Cooke's "Cupid" in the tune towards the end or "Chain Gang" one of em anyway. I like her voice and the musical arrangement, but I think it would be better with a few less "Ya Ya Ya's" and maybe some "Sha La La's" instead lol. I'm sure it won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I do like a bit of controversy every now and again 😂😂

You date this song 1960 and it does have early girl group sounds. I was expecting, or waiting for the backup to repeat the hook line, Will I Ever Make it. Maybe if they did it might have become more listenable to and therefore demanded more? The lead sure has nice clear voice and they can harmonize very well also. Sometimes I wonder, who decides when the backup singers; repeat what the lead sang. Echo what the lead sang. Answer what the lead asked. Or something else. I think it's part of the wonder and reason why I have always like the girl group song. It sounds like the lead and the girls work together to make something we like, and it works. Thanks again for this tune.

Thank you Michael and you're very welcome. I know what you mean, there's definitely some things I would change about this arrangement myself. Who knows what the producers tried out and were thinking at the time. If you want to hear perfection in every way, listen to my upload of The Bunnies "You Don't Have A Heart" it's everything a girl group song should be.

Interesting. There were parts I liked, some so-so. Overall not bad. Thanks for posting.

The same for me. I like the verses and her voice, though the song could certainly have been improved in parts. But, it's another rare 60's Girl Group record that would not be out there now if it wasn't for RU-vid. So I'm just glad that I can keep these tunes alive. Thank you for commenting.

I thought Sue Perrin was starting to sing Cickety Clack, it does sound like early Shirelles, I can hear a few songs , listened a few times, and its growing on me, sounds triffle later to me, but thats me , thankyou for posting Claire, an unusual one, xx woe woe I just don't know xx

Thank you Keeley. Oh, yes the intro is very similar to that record. Funny that I thought this sounded a tad earlier, like late 50's. We can't agree on everything though baby ha ha. Take care you little ripper 😊 xx

I have been starting to appreciate that difference lately, Michael, between echoing or backers adding a new phrase. The first is the normal way, but when we listen back, it's not as universal as we might assume. I love when the other happens, and for some reason I'm not only delighted but want to laugh when a sassy original response sneaks in!

Controversial Clare, this is definitely not-in-the-box, though maybe I should be in one. Love "Tonight's The Night", and this sounds like that other take-off you had a while back. Variety and variations are great, the spice of g.g.!

LOL Steve, I don't know what other rare sixties girl group tune you are thinking of. But, it's bound to be a good one if I posted it ha ha. Variety Is The Spice Of Life, everyone knows that 😊 Thanks for commenting.

@@clareons It was your Butterflies' "The Hard Way" & perhaps even another beyond that I didn't look for. "Tonight's The Night" is the foundation for me though. Back to Martha Reeves, lol, I never dreamed any of her songs would rise above "Heat Wave" on my list, but after numerous auditions, "There He Is" has done that for instrumental & vocal awesomeness. I surely never heard many of theirs, but at this point, "A Love Like Yours" and "Come And Get These Memories" are in 3/4 or 4/3 position, with a good word due to "Quicksand" as a better follow-up than one was used to hearing! Cheers.

A different and catchy tune that I've always liked. One of my all time favorite vocal group records by The Labradors, When Someone Loves You, is on the same label..thks
