I would use a different varnish rather than gloss on lava. Perhaps a satin finish if you can, but lava generally doesn't look 'glossy' like normal water does

@Sandstimes

We can't make this method glow like lava does, the gloss helps because it's reflective and makes it look lighter without compromising the details. Sometimes being fully realistic isn't possible, which is why we come up with different strategies like this

Surprised this was never replied to, I have made this comment to many youtubers as constructive criticism and all I get are either the creator or a bunch of white knights "don't you know how hard it is to edit a video?!?!". On some videos it can be a 300% volume increase for 2 seconds between soft talking or ASMR type cooking/mixing sounds.

I would go matt varnish or semigloss... Lava doesn't look wet actually... it doesn't have that glossy wet sheen look, like the gloss varnish is giving it. Otherwise it looks great.

The fact that not only could this be used for lava, but possibly simple water bases as well, makes me very excited to try this out. Thanks for the awesome tutorial.

For snow: Glue your models to the base. Give the bases a basecoat of a light color just in case. Mix white glue and snow base until you get a gloopy mix that doesn't quite hold its shape but the surface tension ensures it wont drip use the knife end of a sculpting tool to gloop it on, only partially covering the model's feet. It will look like they have sunk into an area of deep snow. How deep is entirely up to you. Sprinkle more snow on top. Repeat the previous step as needed until the surface of the snow dries Don't touch it for like 2 weeks because there might be spots in the snow that haven't dried yet due to it being so thick. For melted snow/slush repeat the above steps but have an area of the base that you added detail to (rubble, sand, rocks, etc) and gloop a whole lot less on that area. Put a drop of clearcoat onto the slushy area and mix it with the sculpting tool. avoid dusting it during the dusting step and clearcoat it once more at the very end if its not shiny enough.

It looks really good, lovely job on the gradienta there, but im not entirely sure about the gloss varnish. From what ive seen in images and videos, lava isnt actually glossy, like water or oil, it just glows from heat.

I bet it would be even cooler if you had florescent paint and put a black light over it! Or glow in the dark paint could work but I’m pretty sure florescent stuff tends to be more vibrant, I could be wrong through.

@@negadoge Yes it's used in many videos but I think it is good for cases where you have long montages of the person doing a very lengthy task or some task which they want to show but not in detail so just show it at greater speed. There, it suits when the music becomes loud but in a short, where there's very little silence moments, the volume changes may feel irritating to some
