Motorcycles can often get through gaps that are far too small for other vehicles. But because we can, doesn't mean we should.
We're riding into a small town. There are buildings to the side, a double yellow line appears to our left and there are longer hazard warning lines down the centre of the road.
What happens next?
First we encounter a pinch point where vehicles are parked both sides of the road opposite shops. We have to negotiate for space with the oncoming car, and what if someone stepped into the road from behind one of the parked vehicles?
Next there's a pedestrian crossing with a central island, and just beyond that there's a junction.
Let's pause and take stock. What can we see?
On the left, we can see several cars. Are they all parked? Are there any approaching the main road? On the right, there's a car waiting to emerge. Coming the other way is a red vehicle, and behind it is a motorcycle. And just ahead, we're following two more vehicles, a small red car which appears to be moving to the nearside, and the silver hatchback which has begun indicating right.
What happens next?
Watch the red car on our side of the road.
Did that driver just pull a U-turn mid-junction? It looks like it to me!
That could easily have gone wrong? What if the red car had to stop? What if the silver car had swerved left to avoid it?
It's a classic 'being in a rush' trap. If I could ride that again, I wouldn't have squeezed through the gap on the left, not until I was sure I knew what was happening! That's why backing off and not being in too much of a hurry is always a good idea.

As an advanced rider, I personally wouldn’t have crossed the zebra crossing with the car in front indicating right, the black car waiting to emerge at a crossroads, and it’s not a good idea to pass on the inside, especially when there is a left hand turn. The red car shouldn’t have ever posed a risk to you, had you chosen to stop before the zebra crossing. I would say the biggest risk, was the black car who was possibly wanting to go straight on, and the silver car in front of you could have allowed them to cross before they turned. But also, the car in front of you could have decided to actually turn left instead of right. Too many options for an accident. Choosing restraint, instead of progress is always the safest option. Good to share these things though 😁.

Sigh... wrote a long reply, and the browser managed to lose it before I hit the reply button. Lots of good points there and it's always worth replaying any incident like this in your mind (and on video if you have it) to see if there were options. I agree that passing nearside of a car waiting to turn right poses a risk if the driver changes his / her mind, though we have to look at each case individually - the Highway Code says we can pass to the left if there's space and a vehicle is turning right. in this case the signal had been on for a while, and the driver had taken up a right of centre position so I must have felt that it was safe enough - I certainly wasn't blasting through the gap. Sooner or later we'll have to make that decision - what if there had been a dedicated right turn lane instead of the space behind the traffic island? Similarly, though the black car could have emerged, I mut have judged I was far enough forward to clear the potential conflict zone before that vehicle could have 'got me'. And my speed was still low enough to stop almost instantly. But, I certainly would probably have slowed everything down if I was doing this again, and wouldn't have used that gap until I was certain what was going on. I really didn't expect the red car to do a U-turn - that just confused everyone! And when drivers are confused, they do daft things. Should I have stopped before the Zebra? Looking at the relative positions, I'm pretty certain that I was clear of it when the vehicle ahead of me came to a halt - one thing I learned despatching in London is not to stop where following drivers don't expect you to stop. Any time we stop, we transfer the risk behind us. We're particularly vulnerable to rear-enders on bikes - a mate of mine suffered serious whiplash after he stopped a bit suddenly at a zebra and the car behind had expected him to keep going. So given the crossing was clear of pedestrians, I would not usually stop short of the crossing in this kind of situation - and the gap up the nearside is also an escape route!

Having watched the video 2 or 3 times since reading your reply, I seem to now see a different perspective. (Just a constructive criticism, if I may. Maybe a helmet cam would give a better first person view?) I now see there is sufficient gap between the rear of the silver car and the crossing for a bike to position itself there. And I guess the silver car is positioned level with the center line of the left hand junction, meaning very unlikely to turn left. However, I would have positioned myself left of the silver car and either come to a stop or a very slow crawl until it turned right. I’m just very cautious when choosing to filter adjacent to left or right junctions - it’s an option for a driver to do something stupid. Had there not been a left hand turn or the black car, I would have happily filtered to the nearside. The black car and the junction to the left would have definitely caused me to apply caution and hold back. Although it is easy for someone to analyse a video, having watched it a few times - real life doesn’t give you that option!
