A quick journey through the fashions from 1838 to 1898!
Hope you enjoy the brief outline of the main fashion trends during the Victorian era.
the footage is mostly time lapse - but dont worry, many of the items will be made into indivudual videos with slower footage and a lot more information and details shown.
The patterns and instructions on how to make the dresses shown (and many more, including undergarments....) are included in my book, The Victorian Dressmaker, coming out June 2018!
Follow our fb page
for more details
As aways, I will try to answer any serious questions in the comments, but all rude or pointless remarks that don't add to the discussion will be removed.

For all new people tuning in, before asking your questions, here is a general PSA for your ease and guidance: 1) She can easily go to the bathroom. Crotch-less knickers were worn, so she just needs to lift up the skirts and do the thing. 2) Corsets are not painful, unlike contrary belief. They are made of cording, reed, whalebone and very light steel bones. They only hurt when they are tight laced. A very, very few amount of people did that, and it was very frowned upon. Corsets are excellent back support, and support your assets very well. 3) These outfits are generally for colder weather. A lot less amount of layers would be worn in hotter weather. Plus, they are all breathable fabrics. Please remember that they were worn in England during Little Ice Age, before Global Warming, so the world used to be a lot colder than nowadays. 4) It is very easy to sit/walk/move in crinolines and bustles. They are all collapsible and made of light steel wires, so they are not a hindrance at all. 5) It takes only 7 to 8 minutes to get dressed completely. Many people take more than 15 minutes to put on makeup and do their hair. So it is not a very time consuming process. All these points are explained in details by Isabelle aka Priorattire herself in her other videos, so go check them out. This is an awesome channel, and most of the videos are very informative, you won't be disappointed.

thank you for pointing out that corsets are not torture machines that suffocate you!! actors blew it way out of proportion, and honestly, it's my biggest pet peeve!!
@syedmazharhasan6803
@syedmazharhasan6803 3 года назад
@@amberf6022 I agree, but sometimes I would like to give a little benefit of doubt to actors too, because maybe they were forced into ill-fitted corsets without chemises/shifts and tight laced all the times, because they did not know any better. I would blame costume designers more in this regard.

Your point about corsets reminded me of a video I watched from Bernadette Banner where she compares a historical reproduction of a corset she made, to a store bought corset she had, and the store bought one doesn't have any shape at all and it sort of wants to force the body to be a tube. If actors had to use a corset like that, I don't blame them for complaining, but corsets in history were made to follow the curves of the body instead of trying to crush them
@syedmazharhasan6803
@syedmazharhasan6803 3 года назад
@@evewithwonder I completely agree with that. Modern corsets can be comfortable too, only if they are made to fit the body and worn properly, with a chemise/shift beneath it.

i think the "it takes 2 hours to dress up!!!" comes from the fact that if you do your hair very well it does take 2 hours but that's mainly consumed by doing the hair. i think empress elizabeth of austria would have 5 people spend 2 hours doing her hair every morning? the clothes themselves don't take that long

I like the 1870's-1880's style, with the form-fitting jacket bodice that flared over the hips and had belled sleeves , overskirts collected in an apron style to reveal a flounced understkirt, the bustle at the back of the skirts where the material was gathered in accented ruffles, pleats, bows and drapes and the front of the skirt was narrower. And the equestrian-styled mini-top hat for women, sometimes with an attached veil, pinned to a curly updo. I think it was very classy--almost chic--like a woman's business suit with extra accents, laces, silks and draped fabrics.

relatively the same, not as elegant as the rich and mostly made out of cotton and wool. unless the woman was a prostitute, labourer, or worked in the fields. the urban middle class generally dressed the same as the upper class. the only real difference between fashion would be the rich and the extremely urban poor, living in work houses. but this was a time when wool, cotton and silk was becoming affordable for the first time for the general masses.

And the black lace (im not sure how its called exactly) on the top part of the dress together with the gloves is just so beautifull! I cant understand why fashion went from these elagant and highquality beautiful dresses from natural fabrics to poliester crop tops and jeans that go way too high up the waist. Its just my opinion but fashion now adays is horrendous compared to the fashion from a long period of alteast a few centuries. I just wish these clothes could be more accessible nowadays.

I love these Victorian dresses so much! We had a librarian in elementary school who would show up in Victorian outfits like these for story times, and I remember thinking they were all so gorgeous until I found out about corsets, but honestly they don’t seem uncomfortable if you wear them right. Sounds very… Unique.
@Olga_Ovechkina
@Olga_Ovechkina 2 года назад
Wearing such dresses without corsets is far more uncomfortable and traumatic then with corsets. P.S. A high-quality corset, tailored to the figure and worn correctly, is comfortable and does not interfere with movement.
@green7982
@green7982 2 года назад
@@Olga_Ovechkina I actually read about this! I’ve also watched several videos talking about how corsets (while not necessarily made to be comfortable) weren’t overwhelming and didn’t hurt someone. It’s quite interesting to learn about!

I’d be thrilled to own any of these outfits. Each and every one of them is stunningly beautiful but the latter ones are my ultimate favourites. I should put owning one of the gowns from Prior Attire in my bucket list. Izabela is such a pretty young lady though that I’m sure she could wear sackcloth and ashes and still look gorgeous.
