Fact: 475 was heading back for some passengers I believe and while it was heading back 475’s driver didn’t pay attention to the tracks and 475 crashed into the excavator ahead and some other train had to pick it up to take it to the repair shed then she was put back in service with a few cracks still.
The backhoe personnel should have re-lined the switch; that's where I would place the responsibility. Fortunately, 475's smokebox door was repaired quickly.

Lovely bell - very American!! British steam engines don't have a bell, they have a whistle instead. This train looks very elegant and like it was made for speed. Great capture!😀
The only downside to the 611 getting restored is that its never at the museum anymore but I suppose that means that not only people from Roanoke can enjoy it
I live about 30 miles from where it was restored. Watched it on it's first time back on the track. It shone like a new penny and the sound and vision of smoke coming from the engine long before you could actually see it was unreal. To really appreciate it, you need to see it being operated at speed instead of just idling by. In my opinion these old steam engines show the beauty and true engineering. If you ever have the opportunity to drive beside one watch the drive wheels and just how fast they move when operating high speed, it's fascinating.
