Thanks Wes, enjoyed the informative and educational video. I whole heartedly support the preservation of farmlands. It's sad to see productive farm land covered over with warehouses and parking lots. That land is gone forever. Solar farms are another waste of farmland. 👍😊

you mentioned solar ,, what we need to do there is put all of those solar farms on top of the warehouses ,,, i live in iowa and my next door neighboring farm has 3 gigantic barns all covered with solar panels ,,if every farm did that we wouldn't need solar farms

That was a 'George Saunder's quality bale run'. Been through a similar situation farming on the city edge. The 1970s/ 1980s closed many of the smaller farm cow dairies. The farms were added onto the larger cow dairies or the land used for remote support pasture blocks or crops. Then there were horses. Further away I heard some places went to dairy goats and dairy sheep. The dairy goats could be barn operations with staff milking. Cut and carry the feed. Large Square bales - put the Westerndorf loader on the JD 8120 to stack the bales in the yard. Consider maybe in the less flat fields, using objects like 'aircraft wheel chocks' with rope for the trailer tires. 24 bales at guessing 1300lb average = 31K pounds (14 metric tonnes/ 15.6 US short tons).

I saw a lot of land get converted to housing developments too. The only way it will turn around is if farmers get together and create organizations like the Amish. The Amish and similar groups are frugal (no big bank loans for modern equipment!) plus self sufficient and the group spins off a lot of cash. Then they have the cash to buy farms away from developers. One of the west-mid-west up into Canada groups have a 150 person mechanism that hives off half the group plus all the accumulated cash to buy up another large farmstead like a bee swarm. They split at 150 because they found larger groups start squabbling amongst each other. Regular farmers need to figure that out and as a group be more effective. Farmers farm because they are independent capable folk and it's hard to work in a larger group but farming will need that. Politicians used to be frightened of farmer groups in the past but farmers are so splintered and a minority of voters they get ignored and land converts to condos.

The tractor almost drives like a 1-4 series JD with forward and reverse pedal😅 On the newer models, even the new 6M series you can have the forward/reverse button on the loader joystick. The new 6M's even have a medium (JD got a name on it, can't remember) armrest that has electrical loader joystick, gear lever and throttle, some programmable buttons on the armrest and draft/3 point controls. But no scv controls. They stay on the fender, But are still electric. 👍So it's medium compared to the full on R series command arm pro.

A lot of very good farmland is now gone due to warehouses where I live in PA. The local citizens were able to stop one in Tilden Township. Big companies offer big money to buy up agricultural land with the help of a federal grant that pays these builders more if the warehouses are super huge. Crazy. Many of the warehouse are vacant for years until they get sold, or rented out. I used to know the name of the grant, but can't remember off hand.

Limit the cows per farm operation and there will be lots of dairy. The creamerys would voluntarily come out and offer good prices and financing for good operations! I don’t want to be sustained by taxation. The other law that needs to be passed is that you can build a house outside of city limits less than 40 acres. They passed that line Kansas. Some people hate it but I think it’s great.

Your not going to believe what I’m about to say. The state of Indiana is loosing farm ground to developers and their housing zoos, and strip malls at a very rapid rate. I live in southern Indiana and I’m old and have lived here for over 50 years. I’ve noticed over this time span literal miles of farm ground turn into anything but AG use. I more than likely won’t live long enough to see it but there a day coming when there won’t be any AG ground left. The county I live in is facing higher property taxes and on top of that the whole state getting hit with higher property taxes. With all the current financial problems and input cost and what grain commodities are selling for I wouldn’t be surprised to see some guys just plainly hang it up.

30 left or so. Dairies in NY that are doing well are either coops or direct to consumer. They also do events in the fall, summer and winter to attract customers to the farms. Elms Family Farm does lots of fun events every year. They get a ton of visitors.

@kieranosullivan02 they host food festivals, trucks, inflatable 5k, color me rad. Then, they are open for pumpkins with games, rides, attractions, and a corn maze. In the winter, they sell trees and use to do a Halloween/Christmas light drive-through. They also host a decent number of weddings throughout the year, especially in the fall when the colors change. They also have a farm store on-site where they sell items from partner farms, including meats, cheeses, milk, etc.
@jamesmcmahonii8433
@jamesmcmahonii8433 22 дня назад
@kieranosullivan02 King Dairy is probably the largest near me and they have their own creamery. Much of their sales are direct. They deliver straight to your door. They also have an ice cream shop that's quite popular in the summer/fall.
@kieranosullivan02
@kieranosullivan02 22 дня назад
@@jamesmcmahonii8433 yeah here in Ireland, dairy is still main farming enterprise but people are branching out to that recently and anything they can really. A lot of vending machines or shops on the farm. I don't believe everyone can do it though and that's when those that are too late or in wrong location will be forced to shut down. We're supposed to be the second most efficient country in the world for dairy production if not food production so it makes sense to continue but the pressure has come on in recent years from government etc so who knows where it goes in the next decade
@jamesmcmahonii8433
@jamesmcmahonii8433 22 дня назад
@kieranosullivan02 I hear about the pressure from local farmers, too. Only 1 childhood dairy remains, no idea how, and it's all they do. Prices fell through a hole in the floor in the 90s. Old schoolers tried to do custom lumber, and the kids didn't want the farms. NY used to lead the country in dairy, but regulations are rough like in Ireland. The ones left are either humongous with 1000+ head or branched out.

I've always said if farmers were able to, all farmers should go on "strike" and then lets see exactly how our government handles that. Yea, won't happen but, man, would be funny, since we know the Gov't. would be lost. Only farmers know how farming works and understand the "ins and outs". You're not wrong but, we've also lost a lot more land due to housing districts that don't sell...

My thoughts Wes. If they allow farmers to get wealthy, they can't control them. The second reason is if you had enough money to not need to borrow to farm. You could force the government to yield, or farmers could say we will not produce any crop this year. You would have the money to force issues.
@Mad_Farmer912
@Mad_Farmer912 22 дня назад
Control is easier with fewer farms. Like in dairy, it's easier to control one farmer with 1000 cows to do what they want than 20 farmers with 50 cows. Try to get 20 people to do what you want.

A developed property will bring in more property taxes to the Government than farmland. Not far from me around 15-20 years ago a church was trying to buy farmland near a highway and the town or township council had members against it who were debating how much land they would let the church buy. Reason was the church was tax exempt and it would bring in less tax revenue. The land was in either the city of Lake Elmo Minnesota or Lake Elmo township. I’ve also heard of people buying rural properties around here, then submit plans to build a small house and get denied building permits because the small house would bring in less property taxes. Greedy politicians.
