djmhyde back in the day it was just another utility vehicle. It was ahead of it's days beccause it offered much space for little money. The mini van version was indeed a new innovative thing but was still cheaper then a lot of the US contemporary people's movers. Don't get me wrong: I love these cars and this one is gorgeous!
J W ...we can bro we just realy have yo work hard and have patients to get one but one Say you could find one maybee not un dat condition but time an patients
He's got a point. A patient is someone in a hospital, I believe you mean patience. Patients aren't going to buy cars for you. Well, maybe really wealthy mental patients. Actually, maybe you're on to something.
When I was a kid we had the same model. My dad used to drive through Times Square, and we would stand on the seats and wave at people! It died in a head-on crash with a bull in Mexico.
worst commentators ever. they have absolutely nothing to add to the discussion on why the value/bids would be so high. yes, it's outrageous, but they fail to mention it's a 23-window bus, which is why it is so sought after. the other rare bus that fetches the most money is the 21-window, yet most buses were 15,13, or 11. none of this was mentioned by these guys who are supposed to be knowledgeable car commentators.
hey, they did made the best wars! it took half of the FUCKING PLANET TO DEFEAT THE GERMANY! France got so fucked,UK almost got fucked, poland got fucked ,Norway got fucked, and many others has well, so yes germany did made a good war !
Hahah. Bought mine 15 years ago for $600. Couldn't do anything with it for a few years. Now, I am finishing up a full restoration, getting ready for paint. Hehehe. Those that thought I was stupid for buying it are sure quiet these days.
the same, used to get early T1s from states like Arizona for literally rust free for < $1000 bought them back to the UK and sold for $5000 and though that was high as it went. wow though $198,000 !!!!
Greed in the VW community to purposely drive the market up. I saw that 1st hand back in the 80s and 90s...And they still sell stuff at Pomona and keep hiking the market up.
I'm a VW nut. Have owned a beautiful restored 1967 beetle and recently purchased a 66 convertible beetle, from original owner. The 66 is completely original. Paint, interior and top and all in great condition. And best of all the previous owner kept everything! From sale contract, EVERY service receipt and DMV registration.... But I must say that bus going for 198K is just outrageous. They have made it completely impossible for the average person now to purchased one and the only thing that's going to be available now are going to be rust buckets going for $30K+. I know the history and the background but that's just too crazy.
Mass insanity! I had a 54 Barndoor. Paid $80 in 1967. Might this be one of the few restorations where the owner actually made money on their project? I love seeing this, but the money disgusts me. People with too much money, trying to outdo the next guy, because they don't know what to do with it!
I spent a good deal of my childhood travelling in a '59 bus. What a gawdawful thing it was; a mobile terrarium in the summer and a most effective icebox in the winter, all while criminally underpowered. Obviously for some nostalgia is a powerful thing.
I'm curious what you meant by "poor maintanance"? My father was a top flight RCAF fitter and rigger and certainly knew how to maintain and repair a car. And I'm even better than he was. I have no idea why you're going on about airplanes although I'm pleased that you can still get it up at eighty+! I don't know what it has to do with a woefully underpowered, ill handling, unheated box on wheels though. One thing's for sure, for the money this guy spent, I'd have an SF260, thank you very much.
It's Kombi (FYI) and it's not even a barn door! That's crazy, I wonder how much an early 50's 23 window barn door would fetch at one of these. If the right people were bidding I would guess in the 250-300k range judging by this.
+Retroman Barette Jackson has ruined the muscle car pricing for everything. Lots of people out there with lots of money to burn and they want that car from their youth at all costs.
True. BJ have inflated the prices of a lot of cars. The fools who paid over the top are now down to half what they paid or less. Back down to there true value.
Now I know that I never should have sold my tan 66 Kombi (Westfalia) camper with a white pop top and a tent! I had it for 20 years and 4 engines, but gave up on it when the rust started getting in the lower body.
These stupid auctions only push up prices even more. Don't get me wrong I love VW buses but they're not exactly rare but fetch a lot more money than some very rare sports cars which is a little ridiculous.
MarcusTDM it's buying into an image. you get modern day bus things and you kinda get labeled. driving one of these yiu get smiles waves and good vibes. alot of it now these days is just that. :)
chris jarmain Yes, that's it, you've hit the nail on the head, you buy into the image and an experience if you like. I really enjoyed the week we had in one. Just a little frustrating that prices are so high over here in the U.K.
It's NOT a Kombi, it's actually a 23-Window Deluxe Microbus, my 1963 Kombi has only 11 windows in it, but THIS one is A THING OF BEAUTY!!! Just watch the bidding action (and the $$$!) go up and ENJOY!!! . I'll bet my Kombi would bring in some $$$ in the sum of a five-digit figure but nothing like this!!!
Wow,,,I bought a 1966 23 window in 1971 for $700,,would only do 60 mph but was lot of fun to drive, wish I still had it to say the least, this is insane.
The average wage for 1 manhour in my country is 42€ Just calculate the manhoures that this took to finish it in such detail. Thats the beauty of rare objects...they cost money
I can remember in 1964 when my parents traded off their 62 bug for a Gray and White 64 deluxe Micro-bus. Ours did not have the rear corner windows, the middle bench was 2 wide and our had buckets rather than the front 3 wide bench.
cesar reyes in his opinion you're an idiot because he's obviously a multi millionaire who doesn't give a rats arse about recreating it for cheaper. Pay, play.
Everybody can spend its own money the way wanted, i just say that i can buy another vw bus with same conditions with a less than half of this, i mean this bus does not worth what it cost, of course if the buyer is happy wasting money good for him!
I have this dream of going to one of these auctions with unlimited funds and buying some rare cars than having a demolition derby in the parking lot with my friend
im a vw lover and vw mechanic trained in air cooled.... there is NO bus worth that type of money!!! even barndoors dont go for that type of money.. the guy that bought that kombi is (im sorry a WANKER ) i had a (very rare) single cab and i could not sell it for 5 grand... also i had a a 63 bug with a wild motor i could not sell.. so sorry for the guy that bought it you sir are a DICKHEAD
Also, the real dickhead is the guy who judges people because of what they purchase. He had the money, he liked it and he bought it. Frustrated? Deal with it.
Jaysen Ballantine ----- Single cabs, as rare as they might be relative to a modern day vehicle, are a dime a dozen relative to the 23 window deluxe Samba. Nor are single cabs a camper, they cannot transport many people (not a micro-bus) and are virtually useless as a trade ute and so that is why no-one wanted to buy it! They do look cool ill give you that. The Bug - there are MILLIONS of them so you would have had better luck selling the motor separately to for someone to put into their beloved microbus! You obviously do not appreciate concept of market value. The auction depicted this vehicles value, not your worthless personal opinion just because you are an expert on their incredibly simple engines.
Graeme Wulfse im sorry i do appreciate them speding that type of money BUT there still not worth that type of money he would NEVER get it back or even close to it .. if i had the single cab now i would close 15 grand for it i have been told that many of times (i sold it 8 years ago) and also had the bug now i would get close to 10 grand now (sold it 15 years ago) i have 1 owner 67 in the garage and have been offered 8 grand for it (but wont sell it)
Even if I had the $$ I wouldn't pay it! Crazy! Now they have to lock it up so it won't get a scratch! lol Silly! NOT WORTH EVERY PENNY! They're for fun...'cause they don't go fast..etc. etc. don't get me wrong..i luv those old VW buses..but I also would love to drive about town, run errands, go to the beach, etc. and not worry about it! again, too crazy!
We need a fun, reliable vehicle again, cars have become so boring. Why not another Speedster,VW bus,AMC,AMX 68-70 2 seater etc.Affordable fun, todays kids have been priced out, just like I was growing up,how many kids can afford a new car thats fun, cheap and reliable, they can't and they're are none.Your not buying a new car working at Target or the supermarket, they wonder why today's kids have a lack of interest in cars, they can't afford them.
What about the original VW logo? Why restore so meticulously only to put the weird Gap between the V&W? It always touched / sat on the middle point- subtly visible through the V to show it was 2 Letters; Volks Wagon. (o not e)
for that price it should come with the EFI 2332cc Performance Motor and Transmission...1500cc for that price....stupid...You can have 5 rebuilt by your yourself and friends for that price!
My Father had this one in 1963-1972 ... :-)))) great car, great time... He sold it for 1200 Deutsch Marks... 600 € today...600 Dollars ... 120000 km ....
For nearly $200K, I could find something else I'd much rather have than a VW bus. And if I did collect VW's, I could buy several nice ones for the price of this one and still afford to buy a Combi by settling for one in a little less nice condition. Of course, if you have enough money, it isn't a matter of choosing one or another. You can buy any or all you want. But, I can't imagine that with that kind of money you would be collecting air cooled VW's. So, this still doesn't make much sense to me. I guess for those who must have THE best, the sky is the limit.
Shows what German passion can build, simplt timeless. We fought for the banks and helped destroy Germany, the only country brave enough to step away from international banking..Now we have debt to Israel and Usury taking our homes...our children coming back in bodybags fighting wars for middle east politics.
Yea the seller is jumping up and down ...he can't believe his luck, would have loved to been there and seen the look on his face when he went to get his cheque and saw that he only got half of the selling price as the auction took 30 - 50% he forgot about that detail
Count on an auction to make people to overspend like there's no tomorrow. Gets sold for far more than it's worth because some obsessed idiot with too much money at an auction has a moment of weakness as a result of greed.
It's the history n there is not a Lot of buses n i think ppl in your country were not Even close to be saleing vegetables in dem type of buses you need to more reserch before talking shit about a bus been dat much you probably don't have the cash to get one but dnt hate on ppl dat can
