This is fantastic, a great video of execution for me to learn from. I am a new student to pekiti, and due to quarantine rules, we have had to switch our classes to online, using Zoom meetings. Last night we covered almost the first half of the 64 attacks, and it was very fascinating. Thanks again for posting..

Just ordered that trainer from Nic, looking forward to using it. Would you be able to explain the three difference between Mcgrath's, Gt's, and Waid's versions of teaching Pekiti Tirsia? I notice there a lot of distinct differences specifically in the footwork.

Yes sir. The (3) main distinguishing characteristics are as follows; 1. With Tuhon Tim Waid, every movement is done with the proper intent that reflects how each tactic will eventually be used in dynamic form. Tuhon Bill McGrath’s body mechanics does not (realistically) show how the strikes (combined with tactical footwork) will translate into fighting or even dynamic flow. 2. Tuhon Tim is more precise about… well, everything; when Tuhon Tim Waid side-steps, he really side-steps and displaces his whole body (which is the purpose of the PTK side-step). Tuhon McGrath simply pivots in place and is very static; his footwork execution isn’t very dynamic and his forms often show that he is in direct line of an attack. 3. Tuhon Tim’s explanations of how each tactic is applied are more direct and simplified. He not only explains each principle’s movements, but also can physically execute them both in the basic foundational form and dynamic (tactical) application. Tuhon Bill seems to give lengthy explanations, but doesn’t actually go beyond the theoretical presentation of any given form especially when demonstrating the techniques. Tuhon Tim on the other hand, forces you to validate every movement you execute. Of course, I am not trying to bad-mouth Tuhon Bill McGrath. We all respect the man. But one cannot deny that although he is in fact a “master” of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, many of his demonstrations of techniques has a long way to go in showing how to execute them in a dynamic manner (against an uncooperative partner). And you can see the result of that in the instructors who trained under him, as I'm sure you can see how my movements are influenced by Tuhon Tim Waid's training methodology.

I couldn't agree with you more and have reached similar conclusions. If I was ever faced with a life or death situation, my reactions would mostly be based off of Waid's tactics as they are much more practical. I'm not a fan of McGrath's sidestep and prefer getting my body completely off of the center line. Tim and most instructors under him are in a constant state of dynamic movement when they are sparring and I see a lot of standing in place with other FMA teachers. One last thing, you influenced me to purchase that trainer from the reply you made below but I have a question regarding a live Ginunting. How are Top Prado blades a rip off? I'm asking simply out of curiosity as the only reviews I see of them are from the person who sells them and I am also a fan of Ron's work. I own the Northern Sansibar and will purchase a live ginunting from him soon. Thanks for your detailed response and for getting back to me!

Exactly, it’s really about teaching the correct principles and mechanics of a combat system so that it WORKS when it’s time to rock and roll, and how those principles realistically translate into other types of weapons, improvised or otherwise… or in the event that you don’t have immediate access to such weapons and have to use empty-hands skills (until you can obtain a weapon). Having said that, there’s still a lot that can be learned from Tuhon Bill McGrath’s videos, provided that you look at it with a critical eye or as we like to say, look at it under Tim Waid’s lenses; how can you train that correctly and realistically so that you can execute it in battle? With regards to Top Prado blades being rip-offs… well, how do you justify charging $997 for a standard, non-customized sword (that’s the current quote on their website as of 05.26.2017) that is made from the commonly available spring steel in the Philippines, many of which were recycled from old WWII vehicles? Handles and scabbards are made of kamagong wood, which crack in colder climates and environments with less humidity. Then they further insult the customers’ intelligence by jacking up the price even more if you chose a blade that is 3 inches longer and with additional upgrades. The Prado ginuntings that I and many others bought years ago cost between $200-280 ($500 for one with a fully decked out handguard and custom etchings) shipped, which is what one should expect to pay for such a blade from the Philippines. If you want a ginunting that costs over $900 then I would recommend buying American made, high quality steel swords like a Biegler bladeworks ginunting or an Eriksen blade. Otherwise, purchase a more affordable and good quality TFW ginunting from my friend Ron Kosakowski... Not the Top Prado bullshit sold by some frauds trying to get rich off of uninformed customers. I cannot in good conscience endorse or support a business or individuals, who steal from their teachers and cheat customers. And I will not hesitate to expose them for the liars and thieves that they are. If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail me at ptkpeninsula@gmail.com. Thank you for following my channel and liking my videos bro!
