In this vlog we finally get the new headliner in the salon area of our sailboat. We used a tongue and groove style vinyl beadboard found at Home Depot. It's completely waterproof and should never rot. The trim is also vinyl. We also added 1/2" XPS foam insulation, (also found at Home Depot) to help cut down on the heat of the tropical sun's rays.
We're finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We go in the water December 3rd.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

I have been agonizing over what to put on my cabin and ceilings and this is it. Thanks.

Regular velcro adhesive will release after some hours in the 90's. The commercial stuff that 3M makes for windshield toll passes is special, it can take the heat. Don't be surprised, maybe what you have will stay up.

Lyfan Deth I agree. 3m also makes a product called ... “panel bond”... Exotic car manufacturers use it on their vehicles...

Hi , it is mauve . Mauve is a pale, bluish purple that sits between violet and pink in the color wheel .You are both right. cheers
@28cruzin
@28cruzin 5 лет назад
The insulation is pink. The color shade will change depending on the light source. Artificial light can confuse colors to our eyes. Basicly the light bulb can change your colors. So you are both right! That vinyl beadboard is a handy solution for your overhead. You might want to consider hand rails mounted to the overhead to assist movement in rough seas. You two are doing great! See you in the next one.

I have seen those on other boats, and I do like them, but i think our bot is a bit small for them. We did add spots to grab on in an upcoming episode. :) I like the idea that we're both right though. Lol. ;)

Instead of using standard Velcro hook and loop style check out McMaster's Mushroom-Head Fasteners. It sticks to it's self. The mushroom heads roll into each other and when do not pull apart when pulled straight up. It is expensive but you can get it in black or clear. We used to use it to hold heavy duty vinyl tarps 20 ft. x 20 ft. in rooms we were growing oyster mushrooms. This is ideal for what your doing. You can get different widths and 0-120 degree adhesive or the other 0-200 degree. Like you plans, thanks for sharing.

Looks really good guys. I think with the counters and trim around the port lights and hatches you have just the right amount of contrast. The white will make a great surface for multi-color led lighting. Caught a good glimpse of the sink, backsplash and sink faucet and it's looking nice too. Keep at it you're almost there. Have a good week.

Amazing how much nicer it looks in there with the new ceiling. Very creative mounting techniques. I am going to remember the one where you glassed wood strips to the ceiling so you could later screw into them. Thats going to simplify a lot of projects, thanks.

Next time you guys should look at the industrial Velcro , that stuff is great and it does not give up like the regular fuzzy Velcro. 3m makes some great stuff comes in a big roll and the adhesive is super good ! I can look up the part number tomorrow at work if you are interested. The job looks great can’t wait to see the boat when you are done !

Those foam panels in the ceiling are a great idea ! They will help keep the heat out, the cool in an reduce noise ! If the cabin top does not flex much (after your other reinforcements) then gluing them is really not necessary. If the screw head are not big enough to hold the foam up there, make oversized "washers" out of thing plastic (cut down milk bottle caps or even large pieces of plastic like from a coffee can). That trim piece really was the "icing on the cake". Your ceiling looks AWESOME !

The insulation material that you used is very good for keeping the inside cooler using an air conditioner or warmer when using a heating system. However for those days you will be off the grid, it won't be sufficient. It would have been better to put an aluminum foil first to reflect the sun infrared rays outside the cabin. The Reflectix product is good for that purpose. If it is not too late for the forward section please consider this option., Cheers, Richard

For the small gap on the ceiling use a small amount of silicone and smooth it with your finger and you’ll never see it again and 100% silicone will not mold. I’ve used it a lot in construction. It all looks great 👍. One thing worries me is it will mold some in the gap between the ceiling. Anywhere air can get trapped they’l be some mold. Take care you two 👍👍👍

I live in Texas the Velcro adhesives usually fail in heat. If you are sailing south in the summer I would worry about the Velcro staying adhered to the panels and the wooden ceiling. One of the tricks people use around here is to use some caulking to attach the Velcro so it’s not using the backing for sole support. Adding the support strips was good!

mauve Also, you should apply some waterproof tape to fill in the gaps between the insulation pannels and with the frame. Othewise, you're gonna encounter some condensation issues. Remember, on the warm side, your insulation should be 100 percent air tight.

That lining looks great guys. Not sure I would have gone for velcro, as I've had a lot of trouble with that stuff in the past. I'll be interested to see how it goes in the long run. By the way, I painted my scooter to the "looks good from 20 yards" method the other day, and, as with a lot of your jobs, it surprisingly ended up looking good from 5 yards!
@jackpatteeuw9244

The trick with varnish on raw wood is 3-2-1. 3 parts mineral spirits, 2 parts linseed oil and 1 part oil based spar varnish. This will dry VERY quickly so you can probably put 3 or 4 coats on (with no sanding in between) the first day. The next day, light sand and then change to 2-2-2 at least 2 coats. Third day, light sand and a couple of coats of 1-2-3. This last coat might take a couple of days to cure hard. If it is not super smooth, use 220/320/440 sandpaper. That will kill the gloss, but old fashioned paste wax should restore it.

The good thing about Velcro is, that the more it “vibrates “ the better it holds.
@LearningtheLines
@LearningtheLines 5 лет назад
If that is accurate that's awesome!
@floydpeters9494
@floydpeters9494 5 лет назад
According to what I have read Velcro tends to work in tighter as it vibrates and, Because you have it basically under compression (with the screws) and you have relieved the downward pull with the screws , otherwise the weight of the vinyl would have separated the Velcro (it is intended a temporary holding) and now it can do it’s thing; 3m makes a version that it more suited for your application, anyway it will be fun to watch over the next couple of years.

7:52 I’m wondering about the weight versus wood… I’ve thought about this product a few years ago but in examining it the density seemed higher than other pvc trim (pvc ‘foam’ boards like koma brand for example are less dense) so I opted out of using it- though I suppose on a larger boat 10 or 15lbs more in the overhead is probably less of an issue. I should go weigh a package and know the facts. A current project of mine (19’ aluminum runabout remodel getting a standing hardtop cabin) is probably going to wind up with 1/4 white cedar (or perhaps wrc I have on hand) but I’m having trouble sourcing a v-groove router bit for 1/4” stock. While it’s likely I’ll just wind up using varnished red cedar (or possibly the white cedar) the fact that making it will take 6 operations/passes versus a router bit for 2 passes I am exploring other ideas and ran across your project. Not sure I’m into the Velcro idea though :) Pin nailer with polyurethane adhesive caulk would never come loose in my lifetime. Looks like a nice build you are probably sailing by now
