I cannot properly comment on the Super but I own a UL Twin with two different speakers that I felt covered the range I was after. I have a self made Tele that sounds glorious with that amp. A beautiful dry steely sound with an unrivaled presence and is my go to format for pedals. I also own the Deluxe that eventually led me to the more sensible Princeton. I was lucky that about 900 years ago someone had a Princeton to sell that looked like it fell out of their car at highway speed. It worked but the only thing salvageable was the Chassis. So I built a two 10” cabinet out of black cherry for the same purpose to blend speakers. As a simple guitar/amp setup it is the perfect marriage for me.

You can't go wrong with one. I snagged a 70's silverface one for muse this past summer. After playing guitar for 25 years, I had never even tried one before. I've mostly played a Marshall JCM2000 and a 90's Blues Deville for most of my career... I regret having never having crossed paths with a Super, and had honestly never really considered one. I'm a diehard SRV fan and could NEVER realistically obtain a Vibroverb... but after watching a great video on his amps, I was surprised to learn the Super Reverb was an unsung hero of his tone and a mainstay in Stevie's rig for most of his career. He used one on a great many of his legendary performances (such as Live at El Mocambo) and it pops up off and on through his gigging and recording career. That night, after I watched that video I began researching the Super Reverb and looking for one. One popped up in my results at Guitar Center 5 hours away in Nashville... A little far to go try out. The next morning, I get a text from my mom with live photos from an Eagles concert. She was in Nashville for their show the night before and was leaving in a few hours. Something weird hit me and I called GC, talked to the manager about the amp (it belonged to a local gigging Steel player), and was so confident that I paid for it over the phone and had mom swing by and get it before she left. The manager promised me I could return the amp to my local GC if I didn't like it, which reinforced my decision. I got the amp and tried it a but, before having a very good tech go through it and service it. You have to swap the old caps and test/replace the tubes every decade or two, and I wanted to be safe than sorry. The amp still had the original caps, tubes, etc in it and had never been opened up or serviced... It truly is a magic amp and very warm and dynamic. Since then I have also bought a 70's Twin and Vibrochamp, but the Super steals the show. People crap on the silverface stuff from the 70's, but it's point to point, hand-wired with great components. I'd rather pay $1,300 for a 70's silverface instead of the same price for a new "tonemaster" Super with the modeling processor. I've taken mine to my favorite local shopped A/B'd the two, and my 70's silverface KILLS the new one. If you have the chance, try one and pick one up, because the prices have gone up a few hundred bucks since I bought mine.

@@ChrsGuit YEP Super Reverb is an amazing amp! I had also never crossed paths with one. Didn’t know what I was missing. I bought a 1968 that had been ran through the ringer, appeared to have been played out for years. Definitely a players amp. It had been totally recapped and many resistors changed. And it still has tone to die for. This one says AB763 circuit on the tube chart, which means the guts are still blackface, I checked and they are. Anyone considering buying a vintage Super, go for it.

I have a 1966 Princeton Amp (non-reverb), that I absolutely love. Much different from the Reverb model - it stays clean to 10 with single coils, and has been nicknamed the baby twin by some people for that reason. Of your three, I liked the Super the best. Something magical about those amps to my ears. Never been much on Twin reverbs. A bandmate had one years back, and while they seem like an efficient all-arounder, It seemed kind of like hearing a guitar through a PA. Clean as heck and painfully loud.

Jack, your labeling of the King, Flirt and Grail is spot on. I have never played a Twin, but I recognize how great they have been in the hands of other, more gifted guitar players. Like you, for sure. By contrast, I literally own 4 Princetons: shows you how I feel about them. And I consider the pairing of a Super Reverb and a Bassman to be the Holy Grail of playing a bit loud (not to neglect my Beloved VibroLux, the amp I would carry out of a house fire). If I had to, I could live quite happily with only a Super Reverb. Such clean sparkle. Such beautiful break-up. The idea that it's too powerful if you have neighbors is just silly. Know your knobs!. Thanks for a great video. I love it when you play that beautiful blue 70s Tele of yours. Or, any Gretsch. To my ear, the Super Reverb is just built for those guitars.

@@JackFossett Hi Jack. Wow, in 1974 or early 1975 (I was a senior in HS, and actually a drummer fooling around with guitar) I bought my first Princeton; I was so excited. It was my first Fender. I bought it used; it was probably from somewhere around '67. It was a black face. Alas, I sold it around 1980 or so to finance some Zildjian cymbal. I had those until 2017. I have always regretted letting that Princeton go. But, everybody always says that about their old Fenders. I have two new-ish Princetons. The Chris Stapleton version, which I really like. And one of Fender's hand-wired '64 re-issues. 12W through a Jensen10 inch. It's a monster. Just perfect. And I have two older Princetons from back around 2000. Both very good small gigging amps. I just put an Alnico blue in one of them. Man, that perked it up. Your video was really good.
@artisanmetalcraft
@artisanmetalcraft 3 года назад
David. How would you compare you’re ‘64 custom Princeton to you’re old 60’s black face Princeton Reverb, so far as you can recall? Also the Stapleton? Do you think the ‘64 HW is very bright? I’ve got & am very happy with my custom ‘64 HW deluxe Reverb, & I really like both channels, but if I could only have one, it would be the bright. I also love the tightness of those 10” speakers especially on the 6L6 amps. Unfortunately, I can’t use the volume of the SR or my bassman for anything. Most Princeton Reverbs reissues and clones, I’ve played and almost all I’ve heard clips of seem really overly bassy. On Deluxe Reverbs, all the vintage ones seem very bright without the cap clipped, and the reissues seem overly bassy. I actually like the cleans on the black tonemaster deluxe better than the ‘65 reissue. I think they nailed everything on my ‘64 custom Deluxe Reverb, but It’s just still too loud, even running clean for the house, if anyone else is home. I’ve never been able to locate a ‘64 Custom PR within a reasonable distance to try out. I would appreciate any thoughts and experiences you could lend.
@davidbeal8054
@davidbeal8054 3 года назад
@@artisanmetalcraft Hi Aaron. Thanks for your questions. I would say that my '64 re-issue is he "smoothest" Princeton I've ever played through --- its clean is just a little less brash/trebley than others, so less bight to my ears.. A wonderful clean, though. Still quite chimey. It sounds much more powerful than you'd expect from its twelve watts and ten inch.speaker. It just seems to "bloom" out of that little cabinet. I have so far attributed this great sound to the hand-wiring and the pine cabinet. I have noticed similar characteristics in other hand wired Fender-style tube amps. Now, that being said, virtually every Princeton I have ever played through has been a great amp. (I remember only one exception.). When you play Teles through Fender tube amps, as I mostly do, very few will seem "not bright enough." I would repeat most of the the above about the Chris Stapleton model. That's a really nice Princeton, too. And, I'm completely with you on the magnificence of Fender amps with multiple ten-inch speakers. Hope that was some help. Best regards.

I feel the same way about the 65 deluxe reverb reissue. I've owned two and they're too brash for my ears. I had a 65 reissue Princeton reverb and swapped out the speaker for a Celestion Gold. That made the amp even better. The Princeton is my #3 favorite fender amp. Next would be the 65 reissue Super Reverb (just picked one up today) and #1 is a 59 bassman reissue. That amp has all the right frequencies that my ear likes.

Relevant to what you said at around 16:07, it's worth noting that the Twin Reverb and Super Reverb have the exact same reverb tank and reverb circuit. If you're hearing any difference in the reverb of those two amps, I'm pretty sure it'd only be due to other details in the amps affecting the overall guitar signal tone, such as the slight difference in the guitar EQ circuit, or the speaker configuration, or even the differing amount of negative feedback that the two circuits have, but not due to any difference in the reverb's tone directly. Unlike the Princeton Reverb, the Twin Reverb and Super Reverb have almost identical circuits - identical circuit topology, with only the following differences in components: - Diode rectifier vs GZ34 - 4x6L6 vs 2x6L6 power tubes - Bigger PT vs smaller PT - .047uf caps in tone stacks vs .022uf caps in tone stacks - 2x12 vs 4x10 speakers (which also means different output transformer, which causes the different amount of negative feedback, along with the different # of output tubes)

What I have always liked about the Fender clean tones is that they are so much alike from amp to amp that all I need to do as a player is match the size of amp to the venue. Small rooms= Princeton, moderate sized auditorium= pro reverb,maybe the Super reverb. Large venue like an outdoor stage= Twin reverb because of how loud it can go and still be be clean. Many places now have great sound systems so we can mic the amps, then all I need is the princeton and let the house ramp the volume up from there. The worst Fender amp I ever had was a fantastic amp.

Thank you, Jack, for the great demonstration! Results are so surprising. Recently I got obsessed with Super Reverb thanks to Ronnie Earl I've just discovered. Princeton sounds so good! I even think of creating DIY cabinet with 10 inch speaker thanks to your demo. Here is my list of players who use Super Reverb: - Albert Collins - Derek Trucks - SRV (Probably around before 1985) - Michael Landau - Ronnie Earl (with a lot of Reverb and always on Tremolo) - Robben Ford (sometimes) - Dave Specter (with Archtops overdriven with some Reverb and always on Tremolo, I think) - Carl Whethersby (with ES-335) - Matt Schofield (before 2012 when he switched to 100 Watt Two Rocks) - Volker Striftler (With Tele) - Nick Shebelen (WIth ES-335 and Strat) - Tinsley Ellis - Marcus King (thanks to @William Sterling for highlighting in this thread) By the way, did you play Catherine (2018) on Super Reverb? It sounds really great! UDPATE: I've just figured out that it was Bassman with Reverberation in the front actually, from your video about Bassman ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tv6EO4wpSBQ.html I wonder if my mistake has something to do with 4x10? Greetings from the French Riviera… Loved that 65 shootout clip, thank you Jack… Very good test & analysis you made there… I’ve had my first Twin Reverb fitted with Silver Faced JBL Speakers when I was 16, back in 1982, along with my first Strat 25th Anniversary, and I haven’t been able to unhook from this amp… I have bought several other Fender tube amps (among which a Vibrolux and Hot Rod Deluxe III & IV) throughout the years, and recently went back to a Twin Reverb 65 Reissue, fitted this time with Jensen Speakers, most probably the same you have used in this clip… Honestly, I have never tried a Princeton… I am now tempted to give it a try after listening to your advice… Super Reverb is great as well but far much bigger and not really useful when you already have a Twin Reverb. I was born in 65, and who knows, I might go for a 65 Princeton but I will never let go of my Twin Reverb… thank you again… 🙏🏼… 🎸

You know, for me one of the most intersting things about the reissues is how dramatically different they all sound. My 72 twin (100% ab753 conversion to be fair) sounds just like your Super and nothing at all like your Twin. FWIW I have discovered that if you change the type of cap (not necessarily the value) of the Phase Inverter Coupling cap you can dramatically shift the EQ of the amp. Even on the RI its worth a try. Also the filter caps.. a lot of people replace the old caps on vintage amps with higher rated F&T's. I blueprinted my 72 and even went with the single bias cap. It all changed the tone. Despite all of that my favourite is a 77 twin reverb (the so called Ultra Linear ones) with Legend 1258's. Never heard better and wish I had never sold it..

The princeton has significantly more treble; twin and super are more mellow and have more mids ( I saw that you put mids at 10, you don't have the luxury of a mid knob on the princeton so it stays scooped). The princeton was so trebly that I thought that you switched form neck to bridge PU when you switched to the princeton.

Great video Jack, and the usual great playing. If I had to pick one I'd go for the Princeton as it was a little rounder tone wise, at least to me. Strange, I would have expected to favour one of the larger amps. As for gain stages, reverb and tremolo, I prefer to use pedals for that.

@@JackFossett I use a Walrus Audio Monument for tremolo as it has Harmonic and Bias style, tap tempo, different wave forms and all sorts of other functions. My reverb is a Walrus Audio Fathom. There is something about the super that I really like. It might be the Bass content. A few months ago We were in St Pete Florida and was listening to a very gifted Blues player playing through one all night. Sounded glorious. It was a pretty small Tiki bar with a drummer and Bass. I was surprised that it didn't sound that loud. I was also blown away a couple years ago by a guitarist in Austin Texas playing through a Super. Both of these players seemed to be using no pedals.

I got a '68 Super Reverb which is an early model before they changed the circuit. I chose the Super over a Deluxe or a real 60s blackface Twin because it starts to open up with the volume a little over 3 which is much quieter than the Deluxe's equivalent volume with the same guitar at 6.5 which was much louder. I also really dig the alnico speakers sound, although they do limit the amount of gain you can use. But I love them all.

I think thats its magic but, the Princeton's tone seems to accentuate the guitar more than the amp .After listening to more of the video the Princeton really dont belong in this shootout it sounds like a toy compared to the other two.This is the 2nd shootout ive heard where the Super is clearly a winner IMO

I prefer a fuller sound in the mid's and bottom than the Princeton has. Great amp that sounds a little too thin for my tastes. I would posit it's small cabinet size, smaller speaker and lower wattage are major factors in the thinner sound. That said, after years of hauling gear to gig's, and playing with bands that play way too loud for many clubs, there's a LOT to be said for the Princeton. It's also extremely friendly in the studio and to your neighbors....if you care about your neighbors or eviction.
@JackFossett
@JackFossett 2 года назад
So I agree on all counts - I would say regarding the first part there Mids and Bottom end, alot of that can be compensated for with a different speaker. I switched to a Weber 10F150t and I absolutely love it. It still has the Princeton character but with kind of an "Essence of Tweed Deluxe" dashed in.

Interesting. I ended up getting a Twin Tonemaster that I can carry to rehersals with my band and crank at home at reasonable volumes

All great amps. I own a twin and a Princeton- for some strange reason there’s a part of me that keeps selling the prince’s . Not the 65ri I now have though . I love the twin but it’s paint peeling loud at 5 and compresses spinal discs and hyper extends elbow joints when moving . The super? I’d love one - and 2 roadies to move it. The only thing fender could do to make the Princeton better is a 12 inch speaker. Beyond that they are capable of some amazing tones when combined with pedals- a big muff, rat, koko boost or morning glory, even a suhr riot distortion. Bang a katana in front of it and it’s amazing.

It’s Princeton for me as well for all the same practicality reasons. I actually have the 65 reissue with a 12” Cannabis Rex which gives it a slightly fuller tone and moves a lot more air than the 10” which for me was exactly what I was searching for in my quest for tone! I couldn’t be happier with it. I also have a 70’s Twin Reverb silver face that I bought for $300 back in the early 80’s but it’s so clean that it doesn’t have much natural break up. I eventually want to have it black faced for that very reason. Thanks for the great shootout!

I couldn't choose one, because they're just too different, albeit with those great Fender cleans. It just depends on the use. I'm one that relies on vibrations against my, ahem, me 'parts'. It's a visceral thing. Like the sound of a V8 vs a Tesla. For combos, I've got a '68 Super Reverb (actually from 1968), a Tonemaster DR, a PRS "30" (EL84s) and two Twin Reverb-like, amps in the form of a 100w Lonestar and one of the older 50w Egnater TOL 😏 But seriously, they have that power to where if you bump the volume just a little bit, they get ridiculous very quickly.

The Super is, by far, my favorite. I own a Vibrochamp, a Twin Reverb, and Super Reverb. The Vibrochamp is fun cranked up for those raucous rock tones... The Twin us just LOUD. to me, it's just too bright sounding, even with the treble cut way back... It's a great sounding amp, sure, but it's very "hi-fi" when you compare it to the Super, it's no contest. The Super is warm, lush, and just has this big body to it that makes it very pleasing and dynamic. Where the Twin is very abrupt and "fast", the Super lets notes "bloom" and, I guess, "flourish". The Super is still very pleasing as you crank the volume... Sure, it'll deafen you, but not like the Twin will... With the Twin, you're like "Gah...". It'll wear your ears out... You can't hide from it. The Super, on the other hand, makes you WANT to try and weather the Sonic storm. I can crank my Twin up and walk out of the room with a long cable and still can't handle it for long... I can do that with the Super, and just keep playing. You don't get tired of hearing it. I do agree on the Reverb thing too. The Twin seems to require higher levels of Reverb to get the same results as the Super. I can set my Reverb on my Super and 3-4 is about as high as you care to go... On the Twin, it doesn't really start coming on til 3 or 4, and you have to get up around 6 to get it into the same territory as the Super on 4. As far as overdrive, I find the Twin requires a bit of fiddling to get overdrive to cooperate, usually with quite a bit of tone cutting. The Super doesn't have this issue... A T.S or Bluesbreaker just takes it into a wonderful overdrive that has tons of harmonic overtones and attitude So yeah... SUPER FTW.

For that saggy loud blues tone the greatest amp, for me, is the 58'-59' tweed twin high output. There is no other amp that can even slightly duplicate what comes out of that beast. Bassman being basically the low output brother circuit to the HO's circuit is a fine amp as we all know. But for me, it just don't have what the HO has in it's tone quality, ability, and the emotion it invokes. That's just me.
