6500 XT vs 5500 XT | Is This Even an Upgrade?!?

2019 RX5500 XT 4G still going strong as heck! I’d only upgrade for a more VRAM and rn high VRAM card are sky high wack priced

I got a sapphire 6500xt at launch for msrp, I plan on moving it to a smaller console like build once I can get my hands on a 6700xt or 3070 for my main one

Thanks for sharing this, this shows that upgrading to a newer generation of GPU is only sensible when some real gain can be had, some new technology / features introduced. I am just glad that the days of GPUs being relevant for only a specific DirectX version in the early days are over! Hardware stays relevant a lot longer these days. I quite enjoy trying to get the most of out my older hardware. Steering clear of overclocking unless it is a safe no brainer and has a huge performance benefit. Otherwise often it’s not worth the extra strain and power consumption. The numbers and your explanation say more than the visuals - they are well done but of course are just an approximation of what you experience from your monitor yourself due to the capture techniques and RU-vid compression. I wouldn’t worry about that, RU-vid caps at 60fps max and often displays have much higher refresh rate and the games shown have a much higher FPS. I always find it interesting how for some it’s resolution over framerate or frame time or consistent frame times where for others it’s about HDR and image processing/fancy graphical trickery. For me a consistent frame rate is immersive, doing away with hiccups and stutters. Low lag as well. I am fine playing at 1080p but do appreciate 4K visuals - but only up close. If I am further away from a screen my eyes don’t really distinguish that much, I can tell the difference though. The new downscaling and upscaling techniques have been a game changer though. Please continue doing your videos. I find them very comprehensive and worth watching.

Id say its basically a cost cutting refresh of the 5500 XT meant to bring a cheap-as-possible option to the market based on cheap laptop dies, its also something you can find cheaper than used 5500 XTs.

I got a rx 5500 xt 8gb and it's just perfect for full hd 75hz medium/high settings in modern titles.

i ended up getting a new 1660 super for just over £300 GBP. I was very lucky as they have gone back up to £400GBP in the last month

Hey Matt! Great video, but you should definitely record your benchmarks in 60fps, and export the final video using 60fps so that the viewers can see the difference in framerates. I almost thought that some of these were running at 24-30fps, because of the framerate of the RU-vid video!!

Would you say the the RX 6500 XT would be a worthy upgrade from just the regular 4gb RX 5500? I’m not able to easily upgrade my PSU bc of form factor bs. So it seems like a good option but I’m not sure.

Well, when I had to replace my second youngest kids gpu from a hd 7770, and the 6500 xt was only 179... I think that's a steal. I did consider 1650, but I'm going to need to upgrade the cpu and mobo eventually, and will get better gpu performance, sounds like a plus.

It's supposed to be...but now the focus has mainly changed to deliver the cheapest price but still having decent performance...although AMD executed this horribly I hope this will be a starting point for both NVIDIA and AMD to make cheap graphics cards with great performance especially in this GPU scalper pandemic...

Ryzen 5 5500 and RX 6500 XT is a good choice?

I'm a barely casual gamer and got a used $80 RX 5500 XT. It works really good in 1080 p the very few times I make time for gaming, and then only the best well known 1st person shooters from the last decade. I really don't see why I should pay a dime more for another graphic card. My pc is a medium fast one with a ryzen 5700G and 32 GB of 3600 DDR4 Ram. Compared to my last graphic card, a very expensive AMD HD 7990 with 2x3 GB of RAM, which once cost $800 to buy, and the power draw was sick. 3 8-pin connectors and a 1000W power supply was needed to safely run the system, then a 8c AMD FX 8350 with 16 GB of 2133 DDR 3 Ram. My new computer has about 4 times the overall performance and was a lot cheaper, both to buy and definitely to run, which I do 24/7.

5500 xt vs rx 6500 power consumption?

Where I live (Indonesia) these two cards are selling for almost the same price. If that's the case then it's an easy choice. Why would I pay for a card with less vram? 8gb vram and no problems with my pcie 3 motherboard, the 5500xt is by far the better choice.

maybe ryzen 5 3400g and rx 6500 xt a good combination in my opinion because if you want to edit you use vega 11 but if you play games using rx 6500 xt can it be relied on?

I use a 6500 xt with a intel core i5 11400f and for most games I get a pretty high frame rate

To be honest man the 6500 XT is still a very good GPU especially for people that could of only afforded a GT 1030 or RX 550 even for on Gen3 and yes it would cut down the performance but still would look better than those older budget GPU's which is a plus in my book and also now since you have budget CPU's like the i3 12100F and lets say an Asus Prime H610M-A D4-CSM board which the reason why i picked that is the more affordable option and the fact that not everyone overclocks and also still supports DDR4 memory which a completed system using those 2 parts i mentioned would be a sub 600$ build because the CPU and Board are both around 100$ each then you would have 16gb of memory which would be like 60$ then a 500w PSU which would be like 50$ which you can house them in a Antec NX200M which is around 60$ and then slap in a 512gb NVMe for the main OS and game launchers (and maybe 1 or 2 demanding games) and a 1tb to 2tb HDD for your games.

The 6500xt was never meant to beat anything it was only meant to give reliable cheap alternative for gamers in this market and they succeeded

If you had used Ultra preset the RX5500XT would destroy the 6500XT cause it has 8gb of varam while 6500xt only has 4gb

I got a 5500 8gb card i bought in 2020 i mite upgrade it to a 6600 i would look at an upgrade with moor Stream Processors the 6500 xt has less Stream Processors then the 5500 xt

Its the low memory.. firs thing I noticed was the 4gb... 4 gb on a new card is pitiful.. Even though the 5500xt is older.. 8gb will help it do better imo.. not worth the upgrade

I have no idea why they called this a 6500XT, it's too close to a 5500XT and way worse in 3.0, it should be called just 6500, then they could also release a overclocked 6400 using 75W and that would be the 6400XT.

The 6500 XT is really just an upgrade for us poor slobs that are stuck on Vega 8&11 GFX. That said, it's still a good idea to hold off just a few more months to see if the RX 6600 prices drop to a reasonable $400 U.S. range.

In the US you can't buy a 5500 XT for a reasonable price. On other other hand I got an open box 6500 XT at Micro center for $160, which is the lowest price I've ever paid for a GPU, new, under warranty.

smart move by amd i think. give the people a good card for 1080p gaming that miners will not be interested in and offer it at a reasonable price. not all of us can spend 3-400 or more on a graphics card

In reality most people who are buying the 6500xt are not going to be using the encoder, it is why so few people actually upload footage of it playing games and more point a camera at it, it is either that or they are following the false narative that it can't record or stream at all, when you can use software encoding with it. It is also not just another 480 re-released but what ever your a reviewer and you gotta worry about nvidia taking your free video cards away so you're not going to be honest.

It’s was just a life extension card to the 5500 XT not a real upgrade it’s just a clever trick by AMD/a few things off, change the number bank out the same card under that new number for another two years. 😂

I'm looking at an RX 6400 for a super itx build. Pity they couldn't do a 1650 LP sized card for the 6500 XT.

When you compare this to the MSRP of the 3050 for what you get on $50 more the 3050 is a much better value... but you can't find that for MSRP at all now. Honestly you can find used 1070s now for $300 and 1080s for $400 right now. Both of those are best value over anything else currently.

Buy a Series S for 299€ you get an equivalent GPU of 5500 xt 8gb

you know, i bought it last year on my birthday due to my old gpu dying after 9 years, ikik potato spec, but a year later with all the updates and such, it is far superiors to the 5500 now

For a tech educator you seem to know very little on why the performance drops massively over time in far cry. For you to learn tho i will leave you the reason. The VRAM limit if met or overloaded with settings can cause a various amount of issues: - The GPU crashing, having artifacts or spikes - The GPU loading more memory into the RAM instead of VRAM of the videocard - The GPU could build up disk space in temporary memory. On a HDD the performance will criple way below expectations for the reason it can not load quickly enough. On a SSD via sata-600 or M.2 slot its less punishing for the machine but still can cause hickups and thus latency issues which drop the FPS. - As stated in the one above The latency can drop massively when VRAM that is needed but cant be loaded fast enough and neither is space for because the GPU needs to cache that first. before able to load. Which can cause VRAM issues whilst it replaces data it deems least important. which could be still a basic like having shadows spawn in right. Why the 6500XT gen 4.0 vs 3.0 drop so massively if the VRAM limit would be a issue? Well for the sake that double the bandwidth will mean the temporary data can be swapped out MUCH faster which will mean less latency. Which will result in more FPS for the common folk under in the comments here. Now why does 3.0 criple the card so badly? Simply because it is unable to swap out the correct memory when hitting a bottleneck on its VRAM limit. It will either be waiting for the VRAM to load it in. unless it decides to drop it into your RAM which is considerably slower to extract from as a external hardware source for your videocard. Or at worst it stores it on your hard drive in form of temporary files. which depending on your drive being HDD/SSD can criple it more and more. HDD being the worst criple there is. Now I hope i answered your question it be nice to put it top so people will learn a bit about this specific issue.

I have to disagree with you about the whole spin of this video. a) I don't think this card was meant as a drop-in replacement for an RX 5500 for one and b) ... what exactly have we been all waiting for the past 18 months? Yes, an entry level GPU. What did AMD produce? An entry level GPU. It's clunky, it's not perfect, it's got warts and isn't much better than an RX 580 -- but for the dude or dudette that's been waiting for almost two years to complete a build, and they don't want to muck around with used cards, this card is pretty good. The fact that it's got only 4 gigs of VRAM is a good thing because you can't use this card for Ethereum mining. It's a godsend. It's available, on the shelves, you don't need to use "is it in stock" bot ... I got a powercolor RX 6500 XT, it plays all my games in 1080p medium fine. I don't need more. I could've gotten a used RX 580 or RX 570, or something along that vein but I dunno, I don't want to buy somebody's throwaway and much less some used mining card. So this card is allright. Here in Canada, it retails on new egg for between 330$ and 400$ CAD depending on the model. The nearest NVIDIA counter part (RTX 3050) is closer to 550$ CAD. GTX 1650s right now on newegg.ca (non-super) go for around the same price. But this AMD card is significantly faster than GTX 1650. So there's just no competition.
