Makes me so sad! I remember watching Grand Ole Opry (and, "Hee-Haw") as a child in a time when musicians actually 'played' instruments and made great music. Jeez...even the 'awful' groups of my youth now seem as talented as Mozart when compared to the "musicians" of today...they're abhorrent; deplorable; mouthy; and, disgusting...and, cannot write or sing a song, nor, play a single musical instrument!?!? Then, to add insult to injury, some ass-clown thought it'd be a good idea to shut down the Grand Ole Opry!?!? WTF! Maybe because new country acts couldn't keep it going!?!? RIP all you GREATS!
This is one of the moments I thank youtube for existing, I'll never be able to see or watch this precious moment me being on a different period and on a far country had there been no youtube.
Thanks for sharing this. I had that entire show recorded on VHS, but lost it years ago before I could transfer it to DVD. I've never been able to find it anywhere. Would love to see the whole thing again.
I grew up listening to these great country stars from my grandmother and my parents. I didn't really appreciate them until years down the line. Nothing like Chet Atkins, Loretta Lynn, Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones, Bill Owens, Ketty Wells and so on... Nothing like them ! It is great that we can still hear some of their music.
This takes me back to the early 70s growing up in Dothan Alabama. Me & my grandparents would go off to eat at the Circle Cafeteria on Ross Clark Circle in Dothan on Friday night in my grandpa's 1975 red Dodge D-100 p/u truck & we would listen to The Grand Ole Opry & I swear I can still smell my grandpa's cigar. The Opry would be coming in strong...then start to fade out...then strong again...BUT NO MATTER WHAT...MY GRANDPA NEVER TOUCHED THE RADIO DIAL EXCEPT TO TURN UP THE VOLUME WHEN THE SIGNAL STARTED WEAKENING. I remember listening to Loretta Lynn, Roy Acuff, Porter Wagoner, Bill Monroe, Dolly Parton, George Jones, & Tammy Wynette just to name a few. Then on Saturday night my grandma would cook a BIG BIG country supper & all my uncles, aunts, cousins, & me & my parents. We would all come over to eat & watch Hee-Haw. GREAT GREAT CHILDHOOD MEMORIES!!!!!
Although I don't have such great memories as yours, my grandfather was from Kentucky and he absolutely loved Bill Monroe, Ricky Skaggs, Lester and Earl and so forth. I've carried on his love of Bluegrass and the Grand Ole Opry, and it gets me all emotional to listen to them. I think of my Papaw whenever I hear Bill and them. I'm shooting my mouth off, so I'll just say Roll Tide and God bless you, Sir! 🥰🥰🥰
I've watched this so many times, but it's now a treasure because our beloved Loretta! You're with God now and your legend will live forever in our lives!
Why wasnt Hank Snow with them ? He was a member every weekend on the Opry 1950 until 1996, and couldnt perform and was going blind. He was gonna try to make a comeback on his 50th Opry anniversary in first weekend of Jan 2000,but died a few days before the millinium.
Roy Clarke says before Kitty Wells there were no girl singers, NOT TRUE, The Carters were mainly girls A P didnt feature much so why are the Carters overlooked as the first girl singers.
That's not what he said. He said there were no female singers in country music that were international superstars before Kitty Wells and he's correct. Learn to listen before you decide to be disrespectful.
richard back in the day kitty wells carter family jean shepard jan howard loretta pasty and skeeter davis where the girl singer then came Dolly Connie And Tammy
Kitty Wells was indeed the pioneer woman that broken through the glass ceiling and made it possible for all the other Solo Lady singer's. Remember back from the 50's to the beginning of time, women's we're treated as second class. Thank God that is not the case anymore but women's issues still exists even today. So let's all hope and pray that God continue to bless ALL of us including our females and that we treat them better and as equals!
When I was little, I loved The Beatles, Supremes, Dave Clark Five. My Mom loved Mario Lanza and MGM musicals. Daddy loved Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Flatt and Scruggs. I hated country music but Daddy said, "You will like country music when you grow up." I thought he was crazy and emphatically denied it. Without any hesitation, I can tell you I can't get enough of the old-time country music legends now. On a recent drive across country, I spent the night in Hurricane Mills. The lady at breakfast told us that Loretta Lynn was celebrating her 85th birthday and was singing at the Ryman that night. One of my biggest life regrets was not staying over and going to that concert. See all of you "soon...and very soon...we are going to see the King". Thanks Andre.
What we all are seeing is the greatest collection of Country Music talent's, that has ever been assemble and God has blessed us with their talent's. From Queens of Country Music and comedy, beautiful Ballard's, finest musicians from Chet Atkin's, Roy Clark, Grandpa Jones, Earl Scruggs, etc. There will never be another collection of talent's like these ever again. We were blessed to be a witness to the greatest Country Music Hall of Fame and I will always love you all no matter what, cause y'all brought me Joy and Happiness! May God bless you all and thank you for giving us ALL a few minutes to enjoy your talents and entertainments!!!
"I was roamin" round in Nashville in the state of Tennessee for I love that country music, it's as soulful as can be". "I have gathered their records for I cherished every name and I found myself a standing in the Country Hall of Fame"
In 1964 Gentleman Jim Reeves was called home I was heartbroken 54 years later and I'm still heartbroken I just don't understand and another thing nobody nobody on this planet comes close to singing like Gentleman Jim Reeves who's know how far he would have gone he was already a major Superstar he'd been up there in the in the Moon thank you Gentleman Jim thank you buddy you rest now
Great stuff! But I hate the reaction shots of heavily edited pieces like this. You never know whether the reaction is related to what you are currently seeing and hearing or not. (Some here surely are, but others pretty clearly are not.) It gives the whole thing a phony show-biz quality that is inappropriate for these great Opry performers.
I'm 15 and I study classic country and bluegrass religiously as I play it. Its weird for me to think that this was the last time they all would be together again. If I'm not mistake Roy Acuff died in 1991, Grandpa Jones in 98', I think Minnir Pearl the same year, Bill Monroe in 96. All of them except Loretta Lynn are gone to be with the lord now.
LEGENDS! Man, I didn’t know how cool music was back then. Now I’m 43 and super nostalgic. Sitting here thinking about watching the Opry with my grandparents.
Thank god for U tube we will never lose these great singers.listen to them on family reunion all the time greatest singers and musicians life ever created
Well if that didn't just take you Back in time , don't know what will ? Hard to believe Loretta is the only one left and she took a bad fall last month
Minnie Pearl is truly immortal. Sarah Cannon passed away, but Minnie will live forever. It's really a shame that when they were introduced at the end of the clip, she was introduced as Minnie Pearl, even though it was Sarah Cannon on stage.
I wanted this video to keep going! I could listen to those artists' stories and talent all day. When the end came I started to bawl like a baby because I knew they were all dead and silent. Thank God for video and CDs, we can relive those good times and good years along with GOOD MUSIC!
Just a Slew of Country Music Hall of Famers in that Room even Just Got Inducted Ricky Skaggs is in this Video in the Audience. Truly a Must Watch RIP to most of these Greats
I love it when all the legends get together, these are the Kings and Queens of country music and that definitely includes Kentucky bluegrass!! I believe my Papaw, who was born and raised in Pike County, Kentucky (Elkhorn originally) is up there in Heaven having a good ol' time with Bill and Grandpa and all the greats!! Rest easy, Papaw. ❤️❤️❤️
Patti Page. And amen. So good to know that all these people I was watching as I grew up, were Christian people who were faithful in their professions. As Bob Richards, olympic pole vaulter and pastor once said, "The best is yet to be." And He is closer than ever, right now.
I'm having my 70th birthday this year and this video reminded me that my mother's drama teacher in High School was the lady who later became the first (and only) female comic in country music, Minnie Pearl.
What memories. I saw all of these folks one time or another on the Opry as a boy. Loved it then, love it still. Earl Scruggs, Minnie Pearl, Roy Acuff, Grandpa Jones...RIP to all of them who have passed on.
I like the comparison of the different banjo styles between Grandpa Jones and Earl Scruggs, another good example can be found in 'Feuding Banjos' by Arthur 'Guitar Boogie' Smith and Don Reno, classic stuff.
If ever on my second life I'd be given a chance to be a singer, I'll be a country singer....these country folks seem to be on the ripe old age of 80's and still kickin'!!
Listened to these wonderful people growing up. May God bless them and may God bless my wonderful Dad for bringing them into our home every Saturday night.
So many of the greats right there......stories that last for days.....great music that never stops......great show......might have to watch some HeeHaw now.....
All but Loretta Lynn and Roy Clark have passed. Some of the finest entertainers ever to live sat an that stage. Good, wholesome entertainment like this, sadly, doesn't exist anymore. No one will ever be able to fill the shoes of these amazing people.
