Will a 68rfe rebuild kit work on a 66?

2016 Ram 2500 6.4 hemi , with 23,000 K , dropped off at dealer they said trans needs rebuilt or replaced. Towed car trail 7,500 lb. three times from pa. to Ohio . Truck in the garage most of the time still looks like new, who would think,

These seem to have bad valve body problems. Had one recently that we went through 3 new valve bodies before we got one that lasted. Same problem with towing.

Yes you can. The pump cover however is the same as the 45rfe.

I don't know anything about Remco. I use either Transtec with Raybestos clutches or the dealer kit.

2018 no reverse all other forward are fine ,only 2 clutches and a steel for reverse?

After the rebuild I get a second gear slip and loss of RPM while in second gear. Does it while the gear selector is in OD and while manually shifting using the gear selector. 2013 Ram 2500 5.7 hemi 4WD. No CEL before the rebuild but it was doing the same thing. Bonded pistons, OEM Mopar rebuild kit with TSB update, new converter, bushings, sonnax CHR146 valve body replacement. I can’t figure this one out. Any idea, thoughts, recommendations?

Has anyone put a RevMax valve body in a 66RFE? Stock valve bodies are the same part number between 66RFE and 68RFE.

I have taken my transmission out of my 2016 Ram 2500 as it was jumping out of 5th gear constantly. P0735 incorrect gear ratio. Got the rebuild kits but might get a tranny shop to build it for me with my parts. Hopefully everything is good after that.. Ram 2016 with 170,000km I have an 04 Ram 2500 that's done over 450,000km same old tranny been bulletproof

This transmission is just a 45-Rfe.. are the physical parts bigger in size? like the 68rfe's are? Wow.. leaving out the flapper flow control valve in the pump. wonder how that will effect the pressure. even though its just an upgraded 45Rfe..... just knowing Chrysler, it will have its own new set of problems. like the 68Rfe did. thanks for the video. quality of video is great too.....

Some say don't leave the flapper out, others say it causes no problems. Has been fine so far. This is basically a 68RFE with the difference being how the overdrive/underdrive stack up goes and spring configurations in the valve body. They are supposed to have big problems with the overdrive clutches like they all do but worse. Even though we did all the updates to it and flat sanding everything, we still had to end up replacing the valve body on it. Just would not work properly all the time. Valve bodies are just pure junk on these units.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission yep they are junk and have always been (valve body) yet they have 4 versions of it. from the 45,545,68 and now 66 .. you would think they would have made a good one by now.......the Japanese makers would have fixed it for sure..American and German manufactures just don't care it seems

Sent tranny off because it ran away in4th , so no 4 5 and 6. Got back twice now that the reverse isnt working. 66rfe. Any thought?

Neutral switch problem, torn seal between VB and case, reverse clutch assembled incorrectly or low/reverse switch valve stuck or fell out while cleaning the valve body would be what comes to mind.

What kind of grace do you use when you were rebuilding that transmission? is it available like autozone or napa

Dr. Tranny (Lubegard). You can find it at Transtar, WIT, Ebay, Amazon and I have seen it at some O'reilly's. I use the blue and green. Gold is no longer available.

Was told the 2c and low/reverse in the 66 are same as 68 but the reverse and 4c are same as 545/65 is that true? Will all clutch packs from 68 (low/reverse, 2C, 4C) work in 66 or I have to miss match? Also would you be able to tell me of the centre support in the 66 is the same as 68 or if it uses a different size?

The 66 is a cross between the 68 and 545. You can use all the clutches for a 68, and is a good upgrade for the O/D and U/D. Get the bonded valve body plate and ream the solenoid switch valve to oversize if you can. There are 2 different sizes so measure your valve first. Go to Sonnax's website and it will show you where to measure. The front half is the same as the 545. From the center support back it is the same as a 68.

Ok as I’m looking a centre support upgrade kit which is for the 68 and was told by the engineer that he wasn’t sure if the 68 and 66 shared the centre support and the he was wondering about clearances in the 4c clutch. Oh I’m completely rebuilding my 66 all bullet parts and upgrades available will be behind a 600-700hp 392 stroker. Also do you happen to know what the spline count on the output shaft (one coming out of the case) of a 65rfe ?

I have never counted the splines. The 66 is the same as the 68, you will want to stay with it. The 65 is the exact same trans as the 545. The only thing that makes it a six speed is the computer strategy.

@@CurmudgeonTransmission yes I understand all that. I’m wondering about the tail shaft of the 65rfe. My truck has a 65rfe with the BorgWarner 44-44 tcase. Got a guy that says he can retrofit a 66 onto a 5.7. He’s only done it on a 2wd. So we need spline count to figure out what we need to mate the 66 to the BorgWarner tcase.

There is 2 small blue orings that came from my transmission rebuild kit, from the valve body overhaul kit that I can not find where they go.. Can you assist thank you!

They go on the line pressure solenoid on the passenger rear of the transmission.

Pretty much leaves the 2C clutch support or solenoid assembly.

Either buy the factory kit or a Transtec 68RFE kit from WIT or Transtar.

Some. It is kind of a half and half unit. The front part and the case is the same as the 545RFE. From the clutch hubs back is a 68RFE. But you can use the clutch stack up in the O/D-U/D drum. Don't remember if I showed it on this video, but do yourself a favor and ream out the solenoid switch valve line up and put an oversized valve in it. They are a huge problem for any of the dodge units. There are two different sizes so to know how to tell go to Sonnax's website and they have instructions on that. I have gotten to where I don't bother to check if it is worn. I just do it on every one I build now.
