The prohibition of Christians owning slaves is, I'm sure directly correlated to the prohibition of Hebrews owning fellow Hebrews as slaves as enunciated by Moses. Another fascinating lecture though. Stuff I never thought about before.

The name Slav relates to the Slavic word "slovo" which means/meant "to speak," as the Slavs viewed themselves as people who spoke (who had a language). Their word for Germanic tribes they encountered is related to the word "nem" which means "mute," i.e., Germanic people are languageless, mutes: Nemci (plural).
Was it that Jews were not adept of farming, or just that the ones that were had to convert while the commerce/finance Jews were powerful enough to be able to afford to remain Jewish?
