You put together the best gear demo's on RU-vid......you play and don't talk......thank you again..... keep it up.... really enjoy your playing.👍👆👌🦫🎸😎🇺🇸
Another great vid! Your amp choices draw you in and your playing keeps you there! These 2 amps sound incredible and quite similar. I wonder how much of that has to do with how you have them dialed in. Did you intentionally bring up the normal volume to have it bleed into the bright channel with the Marshall? I've also noticed that you use Creamback 65's a lot. I've always found them a little dark and lacking something in the midrange. They don't sound that way here though. Maybe I'm just used to Greenbacks and G12-65's.
Hi Mark! Thanks for checking it out. The Marshall belonged to a friend of mine. The amp was modded so it’s somewhere between bass and lead spec. It has more gain than the Germino but they are very similar. I didn’t have a jumper cable between the channels so no bleed thru. I’m back to 25 greenbacks, they’re my favorite speakers. Thanks again!
@@JimmyBurkard Yes, I saw that you weren't jumping the channels, but with some vintage Marshall amps you can get some normal channel bleed-thru when its volume is turned up when just going thru the bright channel. I saw that the normal channel's volume wasn't turned down all the way, so I was just wondering. I always jump the channels on my Super Lead, mostly just out of habit, but I always have the bright volume higher than the normal volume. I've always wanted to try using a Y-cable rather than jumping, but I've never got around to it. I understand the tone a touch brighter and you get a little more gain due to lower resistance. You've gotta love the Greenbacks!
Thanks, that was some great playing, I alway wondered how my club 40 would have sounded next a Marshall. Loved my Club 40, its just that most clubs today won't let you crank them up anymore, most players have gone to small combos and less than 10watts. But I still would love to have a 55LV Germino, and old Marshall 4x12 just to piss everyone off in the hood. I be doggin all the sounds.
Awesome demo! Love the Skynyrd (awesome slide work! open E tuning?) and Zeppelin. That bass spec Marshall head is one of my all time favorites. Killer.
That could be related to tubes. Greg ships these with Chinese Mullards and TAD's. That's a good start but i put a matched set of '60s Mullard XF2 's (single halo getter) in my Club 40 and it's a totally different beast. It's got sparkle like a Fender and lots of ass end. If I want more grind, I'll use cheaper glass. This isn't anything new but only goes to show about comparison videos. You have to consider the variables. Still. these are fun to watch. Jimmy Burkhard's playing here is pure skill and soulful as ever (as usual). I always enjoy hearing him play.
Hi Justin, I personally would go for an R8, I like the rosewood board and more color options. The Customs look "classy cool" though. The best thing to do is play as many as you can if have that opportunity. They'll all sound and feel a little different, even within the same models. Thanks for watching! Jim
Hey Jim, I was just searching germaio amps and you came up. This is Frank Serafano, I recorded your band back in 87 at my studio. Anyway good to see your still playing, you sound as good as ever, keep going!
Where do you get all these great amps and guitars? also, what was the name of your band back in 87? I can't remember. Im still doing recordings, I wish you were here I sure could use a great player I love your style very clean!! I will keep watching your videos, looking forward to some live performances.
I've aquired a lot of the gear over the years, some I get in exchange for videos some, like the '69 Marshall in the vid, belongs to friends. The Band was Mommy's Dearest, fun times! I'd love to do sessions with you if I was there, thanks!
Hey Jim. The reason the Germino is probably darker is because Greg Germino doesn't put bright caps on the volume pot. Also he prefers a bit higher filtering.
That sounded fantastic - great playing and great tones. Marshall blows the Germino away... up until you boost the Germino, than that Whole Lotta Love sounds awesome. You recorded with just a SM57, no condenser / AKG C214? Also what song is that from the chord progression at 2:02? (#F -> G -> A and then B -> #C ->D) Is it yours or is it a cover?
Very nice demo Jim, the best I've seen comparing these two amps. Can you tell me what the preamp tubes are in the Germino? Perhaps that accounts for some of the tone difference? I own both a Germino and a vintage Marshall, and tubes can make a tone difference!
azguitar Thanx! I don’t have the amp anymore but I remember using RFT, GE longplate and Mullard reissues. Great playing and tone on the vid you posted on TGP. 👍
Jim, all your clips are simply superb! Gotta thank you for the Creamback demos. I pretty much decided to get a pair for my 2x12 just because of them. Hopefully I can get the Club 40 in the future too! Quick question. Would you say the club 40 with the vol around 11:-12:00 like on the Black Dog bit would be a comfortable gigging volume (with the Creambacks in this case)? Thanks! Keep up playin'!
Hi Andre and thanks! The Creambacks are sweet speakers and for your question, the Club 40 at 11-12:00 is loud for the places I play at, you might not have that problem where you play. I now have a PPIMV installed on it so I can get dirt at any volume with it, sounds great! Glad you dig the videos! Cheers, Jim
Hi Jim, thanks for your quick reply! Is there any difference in the circuit's of these amps? I know that you can switch between ss/tube rectifier. Thanks
Hi Jim - Nice tones, man. You nailed that Steve Gaines vibe big time! What is the song with just the '69 Marshall that starts at 8:27? Keep up the good work!
Hi eduvauk1, The volume level is loud if you mean db-wise, otherwise the settings are in the vid. there are no master volumes on these amps, just crank them up to get that tone. I didn't use attenuation either. Thanks! Jim
Jim Burkard Thanks a lot Jim. I was pretty sure it was the Black Crowes but couldn't get the title. Did you had a chance to try the Lead 55LV? It's pretty hard to choose between the Club 40 and the Lead 55LV…
Bertrand Dour I haven't tried the 55LV but have played many lead spec Marshalls and love them. I prefer them to the bass spec amps. I'd say if you want less gain and more pedal friendly, go with the Club 40. if you want your gain from the amp and a more cutting tone, go with the 55LV. Cheers, Jimmy
