The tree you painted in the opening segment was perfect. Watching you paint the leaves and white highlights filled me with so much happiness. It’s things like this that make me keep returning for more techniques, insights to your process as well as your thoughts on why you love being an artist. Your line from another recent video was, “I [enjoy]…finding the extraordinary in the ordinary,” really hit home with me. It’s the reason why Andrew Wyeth has always been my all-time favorite artist. The details and the play of light and earth tones in his watercolors and tempera paintings of Maine and Pennsylvania literally give me goosebumps. Thanks for all the effort and love you obviously put into making your wonderful videos. Sincerely.

Love your comment on if you don't feel a painting works, there is more paper. Too often I find myself constantly reducing... until it feels there is nothing more. But there is more--there is more paper. So enjoy your videos, comments and lovely, lovely paintings.

Yes we are all unique and find the path and use of techniques to move forward even with sometimes having frustrating moments. There are so many times, perhaps every time that I have that conversation and think that I don’t like what I am doing yet following my instincts which are strong it is quite similar to having faith that what one has learned will work out in the end. That is rewarding to me. It is getting incredibly hard to sell what our paintings are worth and when I see what people buy I think that it would be so easy to knock them off in an hour or two but I decided that I can’t avoid being a detailist, sure I could do other styles and maybe that is something that could perhaps be addressed in your book. I might sound snobby by saying that many and perhaps at least the majority of people where I live do not comprehend or perhaps think that artists should live on the street ( there are great street artists) but the elements of time, composition, quality and I don’t do abstract art is frustrating to me. I hate to feel that I have to defend what I do but I decided to downscale my work other than certain commissions and plow through just doing drawings, pastels, smaller wc and some multimedia with colored pencils over them or something different. I am rambling and please excuse this. Watercolor paintings as we know can be just as lovely as any other medium but I am finding it a challenge now and maybe the economy has to do with it also. It would be interesting to see what value people in general place on specific pieces of work in different countries. Obviously certain countries are in deep difficulties but the US and European countries I have noticed at least value art differently. I would love to know how others feel and how they handle it. It would be interesting to ask average people what they feel paintings are worth without them knowing the time and resources involved. What do you think? Please excuse my rambling on. Wonderful video. I've been urban sketching outside for a full year now, and I often feel I want to quickly get it to a stage where if someone stops and looks, it will be good enough to show I have skills 😅. Sometimes though I get so absorbed I actually am impervious to such thoughts. I felt a sense of vulnerability, seeing you out there painting. So interesting. I suppose when I'm out en plein air I feel a mixture of vulnerable and impervious , paradoxical but true.

These new projects sound wonderful, both the documentary and the book. I'm 65 and only took up art, mainly watercolors, about 5 years ago. For what there may be left of my life, I would love to put more feeling and expression into my art. I have done this on some occasions, but far too often I've become caught up in the techniques of the medium. Do I really need to "master techniques" or do I just need a more intuitive understanding of how paint, water, paper and brush dance together? If my skills don't match my intuititive feel, then where does the priority lie for practice and improvements? I mainly paint simple landscapes, often on small paper while having a coffee; but this year I've begun attempting more chsllenging subjects through taking part in a Patreon community and a short online course on urban landscapes. Within the Patreon group, as well as various types of landscapes, there have been projects on subjects I've never painted before, such as portraits and waterfalls. Is it best to choose a favourite subject matter and specialise in it, or do a wider variety of subjects help an artist find and develop what is their own niche? I have just come across this channel yesterday. I started with the prompt from Instagram. I watched your two videos of artist painting artists....and was hooked. Today in this video your description of our own individual unique interests was profound. Your insights fit for me and why I want to understand the artists I follow. I could not have said it any better. It is not so much about your techniques, but the why of what you do (not just income) and how you feel about it. I need more information about your members group. Also, will your book be available in English in the US?

Thank you for this video. I so enjoy watching you and hearing what you have to say. I try to look for places to paint en plein air where there is no one around to look over my shoulder or interrupt me. I have to concentrate so hard to figure out what I am doing, it’s hard to get back on track if someone has distracted me. That, and I am extremely introverted. How do you keep your attention on your painting with all the people and cars and noises?
