Hey guys! Well, you’ve asked for it so today we are going to talk all about the new 4Runner and what it means for the horrendously expensive new Land Cruiser! Toyota calls these two brother vehicles but is this a sibling rivalry where only one sibling can prevail!?

I thought the Venza was being replaced my Crown Signia? I agree with your analysis. For the price I would go with the GX if I wanted more luxury. The new 4 runner looks 🔥 Toyota definitely did amazing with this one.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 месяцев назад
Toyota is saying that but the Crown Signia is in a different vehicle class. It’s a solid midsize 2-row crossover, in other words the Toyota version of the Lexus RX. The Venza was a compact crossover Toyota version of the NX. So personally I see that as Toyota entering a new segment versus with a new product.

The Crown Signia is like a hybrid-powered station wagon alternative to a Subaru Outback. It might be interesting since there might be a hybrid version of Subaru Outback after the upcoming Subaru forester hybrid.

Great analysis Josh. Toyota and Lexus really stepped up their game this year but definitely seems like this was a pricing error to say the least which will result in poor LC sales. I also think toyota also mistepped with the bz4x as well which is now basically being given out for free through lease deals. Excited to see what they do for the RAV4 redesign for 2026 though.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! And yes, it’s really quite strange. As for the BZ4X, yeah… EVs are a whole other game right now. I don’t think Toyota misstepped so much as the market around them changed drastically. Tesla started dropping prices for their superior EVs and EV buyers don’t value long term reliability and dependability the way the typical Toyota buyer does. And I’m looking forward to the new Rav as well!

Yes Josh. Question of value for the LC. LC would be better value if having TTV6 with more towing, 3rd row and EKDSS. If that was all included for the price then the value would be there. LC would then tow more than 4R and have better articulation. then what separates GX. Not much but not much separates 200 series LC from LX 470. That’s perfectly ok with me

Love your videos, humor, and I totally agree with this. I pulled my deposits from early Land Cruiser spots at Toyota dealerships, and now I'm one of the early ones for a GX 550 Overtrail. I'm a Toyota fan boy, but just couldn't see getting the 250 over the 550. No lack of masculinity here, lol!! 🤣😂😜If I do end up with a GX 550, it must have been one heck of a test drive, because it will take something special for me to trade my 460 for. We shall see. Oh, and I would take a new 4Runner TrailHunter over the LC 250 if I were going that route. ;)
@joshjamescars

Hello again! Apologies for the delayed response. Yes! Same here, I don’t see the reason to get the LC over the GX. Be sure to look into some of the issues the V35 engine has had; personally I’d give the new GX a least a year before jumping into it. And I think you have the same GX Premium Plus that I do, you’ll need to upgrade to the Overtrail+ for Mark Levinson if you wish to keep that in the new one.

The Land Cruiser does offer iforcemax as standard i believe, and maybe even eKDSS. So if you just want the look and feel of a truck, the lower 4Runner trims offer that. The confusion really hits when you go to higher trims, and then the 4Runner offers 7 seats. Completely agree with your analysis and I wonder which model will consumers favor over time
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 месяцев назад
It does, but I would hope that at $55K (where the LC starts) you’d also getting the turbo hybrid on the 4Runner. And yes! Totally agreed at the higher trims where the 4Runner offers features that aren’t available on the LC.

This was a great video. I think at this point deciding between the 3 would be a mostly emotional process, with the Land Cruiser provoking the most from its design and heritage. If it were a practical decision, the Land Cruiser would make the least sense. It doesn’t have the cache of Lexus, nor the flexibility of a 4Runner. But the reality for all 3 vehicles is there would be a disproportionate increase in value to price ratios from their predecessors, all things considered - especially with materials quality declining and cheapening across the board.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! And yes I agree wholly with all of what you say. As for the price point, I’m not sure if that will be the case because I was shocked to see the Camry’s prices have mostly stayed the same. The XSE hybrid is the same price as the XSE V6 so it went up, but on the low end, the Camry LE hybrid is actually a bit cheaper than the outgoing base hybrid. With the 4Runner, the Trailhunter, TRD, and Platinum will likely be more expensive (in the $60K range) but the Limited might stay around the mid-$50s where it is today.

@GoodSamLegend
@GoodSamLegend 5 месяцев назад
I like both, the Land Cruiser and the 4Runner, and I am not a big fan of the new GX, mainly because I do not like the new V6 3.4 engine. That little 4 cylinder engine is a much better built engine than the V6 and the power of the 2.4 inline 4 is adequate for the size of those vehicles. In addition, I could work on the i4 but not on the V6. I also do not care about the hybrid versions.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 месяцев назад
The new T24A 2.4 is a different 2.4 than was used in the past. It’s from the same dynamic force engine family as the V35A 3.4 V6 which means a lot of the general architecture is shared and it’s also turbocharged as standard. The reason I say that is both engines are new (and reliability is still TBD), and both are going to be similar to work on
@GoodSamLegend
@GoodSamLegend 5 месяцев назад
@joshjamescars I can work on the 2.4 in my garage, but not on the 3.4L, and btw, this engine is used in other Toyota/Lexus vehicles, for example the 2021 Lexus NX has this one. You are also right, there are some modifications for this engine in order to make it sturdier and has a beefier cooling for the Tacoma application. My point is that while I do not like 4 cylinders engines or the V6 engines, I rather have the 2.4L than the 3.4L. The power is adequate, the space to work on is much better. The front of the truck/SUV will be lighter. The engine will be cooled much better as well. And most importantly to me, I do need a special equipment to separate the frame from the body of the truck/SUV in order to work on the turbos, which eventually will fail as it is the case with the V6 3.4L. Is that an issue for 80/90 percent of the people? Of course not. Not everyone is a mechanic/DIYer, and not many people keep their cars more than 5/6 years. In addition, companies like Toyota/GM share a lot of parts and even when you go from one generation to another generation, some of the designs flow through or are slightly changed. I really enjoy your videos, because you see things from a consumer prospective. Most of auto journalist seem to miss that. From my personal observation, auto journalists seem to like a vehicle that no one buys. They are simply out of touch.

I agree with your analysis. I didn't understand why the LC and the 4R are kind of the same thing and being sold side by side, but after watching your video it kind of hit me. The LC is more simplistic and kind of no frills, everything you need, nothing you don't, big solid SUV that can handle anything and that's exactly what the 4Runner is right now in the 5th gen. Because Toyota is selling so MANY 4Runners in the current iteration while lacking a ton of stuff compared to modern SUV's, they realized there is a huge buyer group that wants those things. But the other huge buyer group is just off road fanboys and girls who want a 4runner because its "cool". So I think Toyota can grab 2 huge segments of the market by using the new 4runner to sell to the "I want to look cool but actually have reliability" fans and also to the other part of the market who just wants a solid Off-roader with no frills and reliability. Like me for example, I keep thinking about it, but if I were to buy one of these, I would get the LC, because it represents a more modern version of the current 5th Gen 4runner I have now than the new one. But you are correct, if you're thinking of getting the LC you really should just get the Lexus.
@joshjamescars
@joshjamescars 5 месяцев назад
This is an interesting take! I think the 4Runner SR5 will also be the same big and solid, no-frills SUV as well, however, likely at a much lower price than that of the Land Cruiser. It won’t have the iForce Max powertrain that the base Land Cruiser will, but given its lower cost, that would be a worthy trade off. Since they share the same frame, engines, and transmissions there shouldn’t be a difference in performance or solidity.

I bought a 1958 Land Cruiser last week. I think Toyota has really just created enough overlap with these three suvs to cover every possible buyer. My reasons for buying it instead of waiting on the new 4runner are: 1. I like the styling inside and out much better and I love the retro cloth (I don’t like leather or pleather) 2. I wanted the hybrid but I didn’t want to pay for a top trim on the 4runner to get it (likely 65k+ by seeing the Tacoma pricing) 3. I like all time all wheel drive I agree it is a strange niche that I don’t think will sell very well over the long run after the 4runner comes out but for me it was a winner and I love it so far. I had a 2023 40th anniversary 4runner and although I did love that suv I do not miss anything about it whatsoever and have zero regrets. I like the Land Cruiser more every time I drive it.

I don’t mind the look at all of either the LC250 or the 6G4R. But if we’re gonna have to accept a turbo charged 4 cyl and with it more maintenance needs in the name of better mpg then at least sell them at the same price of the outgoing engines or even less. But to ask for a higher starting price AND higher maintenance cost (which cancels out whatever gas savings) is just insulting.

I think the LCLC has a higher weight capacity than the 4 runner. That means when I tow with the LCLC I cN carry more in the vehicle. If that remains the case when both are on the market then it would be a deciding feature for me to select the LCLC over the 4 runner platinum. Can anyone confirm or refute this weight capa ity difference?

I’m not sure if thats been officially released by Toyota for the Land Cruiser and it definitely hasn’t for the 4Runner. However, it’s worth noting that they’re built on the same frame, share the same engine, and are both rated to tow 6,000 pounds. The 4Runner will likely be a little lighter as well so I’d actually imagine payload will be higher on the 4Runner, though not by a lot. You’ll have MUCH better tow/haul numbers on a Lexus GX with the twin turbo V6 (9,000 lb tow capability).

Josh - a great video and comparison of the vehicles! You nailed it as far as I am concerned. I previously owned a LC 200 series and learned that the new LC would be the 250 "Prado" series - aimed a lower price point for re-entry into the US market. The more I studied the LC, the more I realized it was not going to be my previous LC. I do not think a 4 cylinder hybrid is anything near what my old V8 is/was. The fit and finish of my 200 LC series was top tier. I also learned that Toyota wants the Sequoia to be its top of the line SUV in the USA over the LC. I had a Sequoia before I bought the LC. I am aware of its strengths and weaknesses - it is just too big for me and my wife now. It was great when we had kids at home. I travel a bit for work and love renting a 4 runner when on the road. It is a great car. I like the feel of the 4 runner better than the LC with regard to handling and the pre-2025 models have been easier to park than a 200 series LC. I think your advice on these cars is wise economical advice to all. I suspect that no driver could tell the LC from the new 4 runner if such a comparison could be made blind-folded, but that is not feasible nor safe. For any of your viewers who want a new LC but cannot find one available, I think the Lexus GX and LX models offer a better value product - yes more expensive but way nicer and more sophisticated. Keep up the great videos!

There aren’t many used GXs for sale where I live and of those with low kms, are priced almost the as brand new. I think Toyota knows that their legacy brands (4Runner/Land Cruiser/GX/Prado) hold more value in a cultural image sense today, rather than in a practical sense that fit people’s needs in the past. So having these vehicles be similar might not necessarily be a problem. I think the true fans of these vehicles (before it was ‘cool’) are just becoming the rare. @davidhouston7812 I personally don’t care for the way the four cylinder iForce Max hybrid powertrain drives. Because you have three distinct power sources (turbo, electric motor, and gas engine), you get some strange power surges and the 8-speed auto will hang on to top gear as long as possible which results in transmission lag. And I think that’s part of why the Land Cruiser is slow (reported 0-60 times of 7.8 seconds) despite the fact that it has a huge torque number. The GX’s turbo V6 and 10-speed auto has much better power and feels much less fussy. That engine is also shared with the full-size trucks in Toyota’s lineup like the Tundra, Land Cruiser 300/LX600, Sequoia, plus the Lexus LS500. It’s basically the same as how the GX460 always felt much better to drive with its V8 than the 4Runner with the V6.

So, I’m more in the LV vs GX crowd than the FR vs LC crowd. I prefer the esthetics of the LC inside and out over the GX, but prefer the 3 row option of the GX. I still think there will be a $10K spread from an LC specked out to what I’d want vs a GX. I 💯 agree Toyota should offer real variants of the LC, and I’m sure they will, but why not do that from the get go??

LOL! I definitely was not thinking about you when I wrote that into the script. I think the sad part is, and the reason I would not buy the new LC is the engine. As you say, there may be a $5-10K difference between the LC and GX but the upgrade to the V6 plus Lexus interior and Lexus dealer and service experience would actually be worth that to me, so long as one can afford it. Also, I’m not sure if it makes sense for them to add more variants and thereby cost to manufacture the LC when someone who wants something more specialized can just buy the 4Runner variant that meets their needs.

@@joshjamescars I hear you. I don’t particularly care (gasp) about the engine. I’d take a 3 row euro LC with the diesel. Might not need 3rd row as much but like having the option. Really depends on pricing once things calm down.

LC is for people who want THAT NAME. That is proven by the fact that if you REALLY care about using one of these vehicles for its capabilities or personalizing it any any way from the dealer you get pushed up or down market. If you want the LC name over all else, you’re a happy camper. (But probably not actually camping 😂) On the engines, I think time will prove the V8 fans wrong.

💯 % spot on Josh! Thanks for video. I’ve been thinking the same thing. Current owner of a 21’ trail special edition. Absolutely love the thing however the smiles per gallon are few and far between with the ongoing surges in oil prices.. 🙄 Nonetheless i can’t see a reason why the LC will carry on for too long given the introduction of the 2025 4runner especially with similarity in vehicles & available 9 trims😲 Sad to see Venza go away again.. Look forward to real world future comparisons!

When the LC went away in 2021 everyone threw a fit. They brought it back. If it sells well it will continue to be in the line up. 4 runners will be around. Basically....... Do you want a Taco interior Or Do you want a GX ( like ) interior 🤷🏿‍♂️

@osmarorozco963 Yes same here at everything you mentioned! I am definitely interested to getting behind the wheel of some of these as they become available!

@davidhouston They brought back a different Land Cruiser. This is the light-duty 250 Prado series. What people wanted was the heavy-duty 300 flagship series. However, I agree that the interior is better but I suppose if you’re paying GX money, why settle for GX-like when you could get an actual GX interior?

@@joshjamescars no one touched the 200 series. Why would they bring the 300 series to the USA to fail? Doesn't make business sense. You want a 300 series. Buy the base model LX500 250 was a smart move with a lower starting price. Boils down to if you want a LC or you don't. Toyota will not be losing any sleep or money for any decisions people makes. If I love the LC I will keep it. Or I can get the GX version of it. I'm trying to stay clear from Lexus so I won't be spoiled and ruined 😂 🤦🏿‍♂️🤣

Personally I wouldn’t buy either vehicle. The previous gens were tanks. These things are an abomination to the Toyota name.

I won’t be buying one either, but I think they’re a product of our times. We aren’t ever going to go back to the tank like era, and that’s just a fact of life.
