6V Lantern Battery Rebuild

That's Not A Bad Idea

I had a dead 6v battery in a lantern and instead of taking time to go to the store and get a new one, I thought I'd see if I could rebuild the dead one.
Turns out I could! I was surprised to find 4 D cell batteries inside. I just changed them out and taped the bottom back on and I was back in business.
To be fair this probably isn't any cheaper than buying a new battery but It was fun to do. Sometimes you just need to take stuff apart, because...

This is BS. There are not 4 D cells just shoved inside of a 6v battery. There are 4 1.5 volt type F cells that are encased in bare zinc and wired in series. They are separated by either plastic or paper walls to keep them from shorting out on one another. They use the type F cells, which are the same diameter as D cells but almost twice as long, because they last longer and act more along the lines of a deep cycle battety but are not rechageable. This video is total B.S.

Oddly enough, that's what I expected too. But when I took it apart it had D cells in it. And I discovered that some cheaper batteries have a bunch of AAs in them. Take a few apart yourself and get back to me.

They sell adapters that hold 4 D cells, and they are sized for the standard lantern batteries. It's much better than an old battery and a bit of tape. More reliable too.

I was impressed and surprised there are 4 D cell batteries. Learned a new skill. Thanks JKL

Cheap duracell, cut costs by using D cells instead of the larger F cells that they should have.
@arthurharrison1345

These batteries used to be fabricated with four type "F" cells, not "D." Duracell cheapened them by using the lower-capacity "D" cells, and making up for the unused space with a filler at the bottom. At least one other manufacturer, Ray-O-Vac, makes the same battery with actual "F" cells, but Duracell apparently went the cheap way.

@@thatsnotabadidea6207 Can be made with sets of adapters, one for 4D to 6v and 4 more of 3AA to D, with 2900mah each AA, the 3AA provide 2/3 times of the alkaline version or the same of the carbon zinc type to a fraction of the cost, aroud a 1/250 less

I think the heavy duty ones still are, but those are still less capacity than the 4 alkaline d cell ones.

Do you need 2 of them to get the lantern on? Mine doesn't work, I have 1 battery only.

It might work but the cells that are inside are longer in length than D cells. Not sure if it’s any cheaer haven’t bought Alkaline D cells for a while or an alkaline lantern vpbattery. I don’t use my lantern vert much, the battery in it was flat when I bought it but I had an unopened one in my tool box.

The batteries I took out were the same size as D cells, they were just a higher amperage, heavier too. I was just surprised that there were batteries in it. You could swap them out with rechargable D cells I suppose and make it a rechargable 6 volt. But you are right, not a lot of uses for these anymore.
@johnevans737

If you are looking for sales that are longer in length if you buy cat's eye or another slightly cheaper brand you'll get the original six volt batteries which are the same height as the lantern battery and they have a carbon rod also with a carbon on insert in there too that can be easily removed and used for other things also but they are not these cells originally and you can get the ones that are longer

@@thatsnotabadidea6207 The only use I can see for lantern batteries is in experiments where you need a 6v battery, and for $40 you can get a 2 pack of lifepo4 lantern batteries, they're only 4.5ah though.

It's cheaper still if you use rechargeable D cell batteries. Then it's good for the environment and your wallet.

Good idea , trouble is "D" sized rechargeables ni-cad/ niMh only put out something like 1.2 volt therefore only a total of 4.8volt to power your lantern.

True with most batteries, break down to smaller cells inside the main body of the larger cell. You should do a video on that bro., you'll go viral!

Plus, you cant' hardly find 6 volt alkaline lantern batteries anymore. If you do, they're gonna cost $15 -30 dollars, each. I think they're phasing them out.

Spectacular! Now if I could just get mine apart to replace the battery....haven't used it in years, and the top won't unscrew. I HATE to buy another flashlight just because of a dead battery. It's one of the Rayovac 6 Volt Industrial Lantern. Barely ever used. Just been in my car trunk. For 10 years or so.... sigh.

It's actually a good way to get d cell batteries by buying a lantern battery if you notice especially here in America you can buy a two pack of Duracell d batteries for about $3 less than you can buy eight d cell batteries so if you buy the lantern batteries you can have your flashlight batteries for cheaper you actually spending more to rebuild that battery then you are by buying two more

This is true. Some 6v used to be made up of AA batteries, and was a very inexpensive way to get those. Haven't seen that in a while though.
