"अंतिम अरण्य" सन` 2000 में प्रकाशित निर्मल वर्मा का अंतिम उपन्यास है, मानव संवेदना के उस अतल को छूता हुआ जहाँ अनेक ज्वालामुखी सोते हैं। एक हल्का धुआँ कुहासे सा उठता है जो संवेदना से भरे मन के होने का पता देता है पर ये ज्वालामुखी फूटते नहीं हैं और बाहर की बजाय भीतर की तरफ खुलते हैं, अपने ही मन की परतें खोलते हुए पाठक को "विचार" के अनजाने तल पर ले जाकर छोड़ देते हैं अपनी-अपनी विचार- यात्रा करने के लिये।
"अंतिम अरण्य" भी पाठक को ऐसी यात्रा पर ले जाता है जो मेहरा साहब की जीवन की अंतिम यात्रा के रूप में है। निर्मल वर्मा ने यह उपन्यास प्रथम पुरुष में लिखा है। लेखक कहानी के पात्रों के बीच रहता है "मैं" बन कर, कहानी वही सुना रहा है, स्थितियों और चरित्रों पर टिप्पणी दे रहा है। लेखक इस छोटे से पहाड़ी शहर में अपने जीवन से बच कर दूसरों के जीवन में शामिल हो जाता है, मेहरा साहब, उनकी पत्नी, उनकी बेटी, अन्नाजी, डा सिंह, निरंजन बाबू, मुरलीधर ..सबके जीवन के अतीत और वर्तमान में गुँथ जाता है। निर्मल वर्मा की लेखन शैली की यह विशेषता है कि वह कहानी नहीं बल्कि दृश्य और वातावरण प्रस्तुत करते हैं। इन दृश्यों में भी, वह दृश्य की ऊपरी तह तोड़, केवल दृश्य के भीतर ही नहीं पैठते हैं बल्कि उस दृश्य को उसकी भीतरी और बाहरी विशेषताओं समेत पूरी समग्रता के साथ ईमानदारी से प्रस्तुत कर देते हैं। "अंतिम अरण्य" में भी कहानी या घटनाएँ कम और दृश्य अधिक हैं, इन दृश्यों की पर्तें हैं जो उपन्यास के कथानक के आगे बढ़ने के साथ-साथ उधड़ती हैं और उपन्यास के चरित्रों के भीतर का पूरा एक संसार खड़ा कर देती हैं। (डॉ. शैलजा सक्सेना के शब्दों में)
श्रीलाल शुक्ल इस उपन्यास के विषय में लिखते हैं "निश्चय ही, बाहर से शान्त और तटस्थ सी दीखती हुई यह कुछ विलक्षण दुनिया है। या निर्मल यह लक्षित करा रहे हैं कि लोगों के भीतर गहनता से प्रवेश करने की प्रवृति हो तो दुनिया का सहज से सहज दीखने वाला कोना भी विलक्षण लगेगा?"
