Had a friend who's Father owns a 7-11 franchise , for 8 years he was not able to earn back the investment and was forced to close in the midst of pandemic due to lockdowns.
@celebrityFameFinder

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear that. At least your friend's dad can take solace in the fact that he's not the only one struggling during these crazy times. I mean, who would have thought that owning a 7-11 could be such a risky investment? I guess it just goes to show that even the most seemingly stable businesses can be vulnerable in the face of a global pandemic. On the bright side, at least your friend's dad can say he gave it his best shot for eight whole years! That's more than most people can say for their failed business ventures. ;D

There was a huge scandal over 7-11 here in Australia about 4 years ago, the franchisees were drastically under paying the shift workers , who were almost all semi clueless immigrant workers with little or no idea of their minimum rights in the end the head franchisor was forced to repay millions to scammed workers. The franchisees almost to a man said that it was impossible to make money with the set up and the whole time the head office was fully aware of the problem as they had access to all the financials from the entire system. The whole thing was almost designed to fail to enable store churn.
@JohnS-er7jh
@JohnS-er7jh Год назад
what do you mean be drastically underpaying the workers? Are you saying they paid them in cash (instead of a check)? Because in America there is no such thing as underpaying retail workers, they make the minimum wage, the only way someone could be underpaid is if they didn't receive overtime pay.
@Ozvideo1959
@Ozvideo1959 Год назад
@@JohnS-er7jh In Australia the minimum wage is about $19.80 Aus dollars per hour. Many of their employees are Indian or Sri lankan and presumably not aware of their working rights. Here most businesses pay their workforce via electronic deposits into their bank accounts, and by law are required to provide their workers with a paper pay slip. Franchisees got caught underpaying staff and were fined. Same thing has happened in the restaurant industry, where some very high profile owners have been caught doing the same.
@johnstirling6597
@johnstirling6597 Год назад
@@JohnS-er7jh There are nationally mandated minimum wages here,( I think currently it is around $21.38 an hour). There is a tendency for these type of convenience shops to be owned by immigrants and they would employ foreign students and pay them $10 to $15 an hour, by law these students are only allowed to work a max of 20 hours a week or loose their visas so if they worked more than the 20 hours they were payed cash($5 to $10) and if they complained or demanded more$ they were told that they would be reported to immigration so either way they had them over a barrel.

Wow, that's some serious stuff. It's always a bummer when big companies take advantage of their workers, especially when those workers are already at a disadvantage. It's good to see that justice was served in the end, though. Let's hope that 7-Eleven has learned from this and is making sure all of its franchisees are treating their employees fairly in Australia.

Hey there! Wow, it sounds like you've had some pretty rough experiences with 7-11 stores. It's definitely not a good sign when a business isn't willing to invest in renovations and upkeep. But on the bright side, at least you know you can always count on 7-11 to be there for you in a pinch, even if the floors are a little creaky and the ceiling is falling apart. Maybe it's just part of the charm? Either way, I hope you're able to find a more aesthetically pleasing convenience store to satisfy your cravings.

I was doing my due diligence on this franchise, and found out nothing but horror stories exist for their current franchises. There's a huge lawsuit in California regarding the issue of the franchise forcing their owners to all sales earnings into the 7-11 trust account, and not their own bank accounts. 7-11 will take their cut and disperse the remaining to the franchisees. The hours are a constant complaint and their inability to keep employees; especially for nighttime hours. run far away from these guys

Wow, thanks for doing your research and sharing your findings with us! I mean, who wouldn't want to join a company with a lawsuit and a reputation for mistreating its franchise owners and employees? Sounds like a total dream come true. I'm sure 7-11 will totally take good care of us and not take their cut of all our hard earned money. And working endless hours with no support or appreciation? Sign me up! But seriously, thanks for the warning. I think I'll pass on this opportunity and stick to my day job flipping burgers at McDonald's.

I am a convenience store franchisee in Taiwan, and what this video said is true. 24hrs, forced to stock too much goods and food, then we eat expired food, open another store nearby your store... nowadays many CVS franchisees in Taiwan even can not earn their investment back when the 10 years contract is expired.

Wow, talk about a tough gig. It sounds like being a convenience store franchisee in Taiwan is the ultimate test of endurance. 24-hour shifts, stocking too much goods and food, and eating expired food. All while having another store open up right next to yours. It's like a never-ending cycle of retail hell. But hey, at least you can take comfort in the fact that you're not alone in this struggle. A video like this is long overdue. I never patronize these stores but instead get my household goods from super markets which they themselves are no good. Also just to add, Winchells Donuts and Yum Yum Donuts are in the same class of evil like 7-11's. My parents ran several of them in the Hollywood, CA area, worked long hours, customers loved our service and business was climbing. After more than 12 years of service to Winchells, they were fired and my Dad died of enlarged heart from working graveyard shifts baking donuts because employees were hard to find to fill that slot.

Hello Oblivieon, at one time decades ago, it was lucrative but over the decades, Corporate would continue to chip away at the profits of the franchisee owners. They would constantly turn the screws on us. My family was involved in the chain since the 1970's and recently sold our only two stores. In the beginning many of our friends who were franchisee owners all wanted to grow and buy more stores. However, over the recent years, that attitude has changed. Many of my friends who I know that are owners and that I would meet regularly with at our Franchise Association Meetings have decided not to grow their network of stores. Their main reasons for not wanting any more stores is due to 7-11 Corporate and them constantly chipping away at the owners profits to the point where it is simply not an attractive opportunity longer and an opportunity with growing risk. I do know some owners that are making good money but they constantly battle with 7-11 Corporate. It is very political as well. Franchisee owners should do their best to remain on the good side of 7-11 Corporate. Otherwise, 7-11 will make their lives difficult.

My parents were 7-11 owners for decades. So naturally I started working in them at 8 years old working when they bought their first 7-11. I went every day after school and on weekends as a child (typically working double shifts on weekends). As a grade school child my parents had me working 50+ hours weeks. My grade school teachers accused me of working too much (like I had a choice) as my parents would take me to work in the stores instead of school countless times. Dad, in addition to physically abusing me with wire clothes hangers, wooden hangers, thick leather military belts, etc. was an alcoholic and philandering with the female staff behind Mom's back (I witnessed it) and he eventually confessed to me on his death bed that he bought one of his mistress female managers a house (with money that should have gone to our family of course). I had witnessed him regularly giving one of his mistress's kids countless bags of groceries (his mistress was married just like Dad was to Mom). He had a double life. Mom nearly divorced Dad then. Mom and Dad always struggled to get help for the 7-11 stores and so while in high school and college I worked countless hours and literally full weekends. Dad "never" paid me for working for him at 7-11, he said my room and board at home was my pay. He did give money to the other siblings and spoiled my youngest sister with convertible sports cars, her own beautiful apartment and generous paychecks all while she worked very little. So, I had to get an additional job while in school to make my personal money. An example of my week was to go to school and then work at the 7-11 immediately after class. Dad would yell at me if I did not race to the store after class. On Friday, I would go to school all day, and then wait tables at a local restaurant which ended at 11 pm and then go straight to 7-11 by midnight to work the graveyard (now they call it sunrise shift). Countless times, my shift which was supposed to end the next morning at 8 am but would literally go until Sunday night or Monday morning. My parents would call me at the store and say, "Oh we have a no-show, can you work another 8 hours?" I had countless 50+ hour shifts like that where I would take a nap in between customers as the bell would ring during graveyard shift when customers would walk in. When a second worker would come, I would have time to take a longer nap like 20-30 minutes until it got real busy. That is true in the video, how we were not allowed to close at 7-11. One time, when I was in high school, we had a no-show employee for the graveyard shift, so being 15 years old at the time, Dad drove me to the store at 11 pm to work graveyard. When he was leaving he showed me a newspaper article that showed the artist rendering of a serial killer that was described in the newspaper article of going around to 7-11s in very early morning, zip-tying the clerks, robbing the store, and then killing the clerks by gunshot. 7-11 corporate did not allow us to close the store regardless of the killer so I had to work. That entire night, we hardly had any customers and I felt like I was experience an 8-hour straight anxiety attack just waiting for the shift to end with hopefull no killer. I attended college and I felt like Dad did everything to keep me from graduating. When I graduated, he wanted me to stay working for him and manage my own store under him. I asked him if I would start to get paid and he was very vague about it telling me not to worry about the profits as the profits would all go in a big pot that would be split up among Mom, him and me (lol). Obviously, his goals was to have me continue to work for free for him. I actually was on payroll but Mom and Dad would cash my paychecks in their bank accounts and then they claimed me on their taxes as a dependent. That of course stopped once I graduated from college and left that living hell. Mom and Dad eventually passed. We had 4 siblings and Mom put in her will for my sister and me to have one store and the other brother and sister to take the other store. I knew how to run the store so I took over the reigns no problem. However, I had to deal with 7-11 Corporate who is evil. The local District Manager's nickname among 7-11 owners was "The Anti-Christ." So the Anti--Christ, once Mom and Dad passed, took over one of the stores, claiming contract violations. My younger brother and sister alcoholic and drug users and were clueless and just let 7-11 take over the store. So I had to negotiate it back from 7-11 and negotiate the right to sell it and then sell and negotiate the sale of the store to a new owner. The store, at the time, was losing money but I managed to sell it for $550,000. It was hell selling that store because my older sister was Trustee for Mom's estate and not business savvy, we had a terrible trust attorney and then my younger brother and sister were clueless alcoholic drug addicts who had hire some idiot clueless attorneys to represent them in the trust proceedings. I had planned to take over Mom's 7-11 store that she willed to me but 7-11 told me that I did not pass their approval process to own the store. So I told them, I had worked in that store for decades, I have an MBA from a Top 10 University, I have assets, business experience, etc. They could never give me a reason why I did not pass their franchisee approval process. And then legal problems were mounting with them as I was running the 7-11 store I was given by Mom. The legal issues with 7-11 became so great, I decided to sell the store and sold it for $750,000 as it was a profitable store. A couple 7-11 Corporate Franchise Sales idiots told me I would be "lucky" to sell the two stores for $1,000,000 total. I ended up selling the stores for far over that at $1,300,000. And during the process they were trying to stifle me and also attempted to keep the proceeds from the $550,000 store sale. In the end after selling both stores, it was such hell dealing with them that I was shocked I made it through with the full proceeds. That 7-11 Corporation treated my family and me like trash after decades of hard work and service.

Oh wow, your story really hit me. It's hard to even comprehend the amount of work you had to do as a child, and the fact that your father was physically abusive and unfaithful just adds another layer of trauma to your experience. It's so unfair that your parents treated you like this, and it's no wonder you felt like your father was trying to keep you from graduating college. It sounds like you had to work extra hard and get an additional job just to make your own money, and even then, your parents were cashing your paychecks and claiming you as a dependent on their taxes. It's so wrong that you were essentially working for free for your own parents. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to work in a 7-11 all night, knowing that there was a serial killer targeting those stores. That must have been absolutely terrifying, and it's ridiculous that corporate wouldn't let you close the store for your own safety. It's a wonder you were able to make it through that shift without having a full-blown anxiety attack. I'm glad to hear that you were able to graduate college and move on from that situation, but it's clear that you had a really tough start in life. Hang in there and try to focus on the positive things in your life. It sounds like you're a survivor, and that's something to be proud of.

@@ricoriofrer3706 Hi Rico, thank you for your words. Yes, it is actually 100% accurate. Sorry for that long vent of mine. I viewed that very well made and true video on 7-11 and it triggered me to write that story. There are even more depressing, and hard--to-believe elements about the story. For example, I recall being in grade school, sitting in my bedroom doing homework if I did not work at the 7-11 that day. I would hear Dad walk in my bedroom after he arrived home from work. Sometimes he would be in a rage and other times he would be very calm. Regardless of his behavior though it would end up with him taking off his thick leather belt and I would start to scream knowing what was about to happen. He would then yell at me to remove my clothes and would forcefully take them off if I did not and then just start whipping me with his thick military-style leather belt all over my body. Other tools he would use to abuse me included binding 5-8 wire clothes hangers together to whip me or use wooden clothes hangers, but he stopped using wooden hangers because they would always break on my body and when they broke, he would have to stop the beating to retool. I would always get very bad welts, bruises and often blood. This was all for no reason that I was aware of as I was a studious, respectful kid (the most successful in school and best athlete out of the four siblings). I hate to say it, but Dad was honestly one of the sickest and twisted, narcistic sociopaths that I had ever met in my life. Mom at one point found child pornography in his car so I always wondered if he got some sick, twisted thrill out of beating my young, naked body so badly. As an adult I had approached him multiple times about why he abused me. His response was always the same, "Son, I don't know what abuse you are talking about. I would never, never hurt you or even touch you in a wrong way." On his death bed, I went to his care facility to attempt to ask him once more about why he abused me, but it was too late. He was dying from cancer, was losing his voice and went from weighing 250 lbs as a collegiate athlete to weighing 80 lbs days before he passed. I still thanked him for bringing me into the world and parenting me. When I had thanked him for parenting me (even though he was a horrifically bad parent), he finally broke down for once by replying to me, "Son, I am sorry for all of the bad things that I did to you throughout your life." He confessed to more of his sins of his philandering and told me about all the money he gave to his last mistress and the house he secretly bought that mistress, and he passed a few days after but really couldn't talk much after that day he told me those words.

And it taught me a healthy lifestyle as well as I had to get pack on muscle and learn martial arts at a young age to defend myself against my abusive parents. As an example of how growing up like that benefited me, as an adult, I went to work for a global tech company and was assigned to their slowest least successful division, the Asia-Pacific Markets division. After the prior sales execs in my position all failed, I had succeeded in the high-pressure position and in addition to making it the highest growth division at that company, I became the #1 ranked sales executive in the company out of 700 global sales execs and as a result my engineer became the #2 ranked engineer. What a very well edited video! Most videos of this type are okay just to listen to but the graphics, pictures and videos were of the highest quality. Regarding 7-Eleven, I agree with all of your points but you did not answer the two biggest questions: 1. Why is this company still booming after 95 years of being in business. 2. Why are people still purchasing 7-Eleven franchise which includes even current owners who have multiple franchises.
@celebrityFameFinder
@celebrityFameFinder Год назад
It sounds like you really enjoyed the visual elements of the video! As for your questions about 7-Eleven, it's definitely true that the company has had a long and successful history. It's possible that their success is due to a combination of factors, such as a strong brand, a convenient location in neighborhoods and along major roads, and a wide range of products and services that appeal to a diverse customer base. As for why people still purchase 7-Eleven franchises, it could be that they see the opportunity for a profitable business and are willing to take on the challenges and responsibilities that come with it. What I typed here may contradict what I mentioned in the video, but there's really a lot of factors and not able to cover in a 9 mins video. But thank you for bringing up these important questions! We apologize that they were not addressed in the video. Once again, thank you for your feedback and for helping us to improve our content. We appreciate your support and look forward to providing you with more informative and engaging material in the future :)

Interesting video, and likely correct on most points. Several 7-Eleven stores here have closed, and none have ever become convenience stores again. One was re-purposed into a medical marijuana dispensary, one was repurposed into a fast food restaurant, but most ended up being demolished. As the video explains, opening a business as a franchise is FAR worse compared to opening as an unaffiliated (mom-and-pop) small business. If you open a mom-and-pop convenience store, at least you don't have a corporate HQ forcing you to be open 24/7 if nighttime sales do not support it, forcing you to stock merchandise that does not sell, dictating retail pricing, and taking a huge percentage of your gross sales for the privilege.

Some of the 7-Elevens in the US look like third world management from India, that run them. And a lot of them have an attitude of; "hay customer.... I'm doing you a favor. Oh ya... it's us versus you. And if you don't like it, get out". And a lot of it, I think, has to do with thier old and outdated caste system. How does the caste system work in India? It is a social hierarchy passed down through families. And it's also an attitude from thier core and basic belief. Also I notice, they dominate the IT industry, in the US. And once they're in your organization. They're going to dominate and control your business because they're only going to work with their relatives or friends that have the same caste. This does not only apply to the individuals from india. It also applies to a lot of other cultures or nationalities as well. I've walked into businesses or had a entry level position. And the thing I have noticed is. There are businesses that only have people from China working there, or Mexico or from the Philippines etc.... When I see that sort of thing, I generally will not come back to that business. When i, as a consumer see a diverse workplace. That's what I continue to buy goods and services from that business. I will say this. Compucom, the tech consultant that deals with 711 repairs like its servers and POS systems, have one of the worse partnerships in the Break-Fix industry. I've worked for compucom for 7 years and when we won the 711 contract to repair their equipment, I started to hate what I did. Compucom bent over unconditionally and let 711 drag them through the mud. I was one of those guys who worked on their equipment. When we first started, ever single call was a sev 1(critical system down) on literally every call. It was an absolute nightmare. Techs on my team would be working on other things and had to completely drop what we was doing just to get to 711 within a promised time. We had to notify our back office that we was on the way and had only an hour to get there before we blew our promise times. If we missed our promise times, Compucom would get hit with massive fees. The agreements that were established at the time of the contract was unrealistic. This shady business practice drove a lot of compucom field techs out of the field. I held on for a few more months. I was curious to see how bad things were going to get. Lo and behold, things got worse. Management became puppets for 711. It's like they injected themselves into a field that could've been fun to participate in. But due to the stores being operational for 24 hours and 7 days a week, 711 took over compucom. There was many days I slept in my car waiting for a shipment to arrive because I lived so far away from the stores. Management was aware of this, but they couldn't do anything. Later, they just started being pushed by upper management to keep us working like as if we had no life. I had a cute little run in with my manager telling him how they treated us and want to be available anytime, yet, for the 6 years I worked so far, I haven't received a raise. 711 took over the priority of all other contracts we had. It was absolutely insane. Eventually, I left the company to become a software engineer(which I have, as of now, reached my goal) because I became fed up with 711 and how compucom let them run the company. I'm really worried about my coworkers. I hope they all found something much better.

But then they had a brilliant idea to stay open all the time because, let's be real, who doesn't crave a Slurpee at 3 am? So, in short, the name is a bit of a misnomer these days. But hey, at least it's a catchy one!

You know what could of prevented all of that? Not sign the damn contract. They read the rules. They understood the rules. You got yourself into that situation. Honestly I don't feel sorry for those people. You got to be smarter than that. I knew franchise owners of a couple of 7-11s and they did more fine. In fact they're entire costs were covered just by the coffee they sold. Everything was profit for them and HQ. Don't get yourself into stupid situations if you can't handle it then expect sympathy. You don't deserve it.

Whoa, harsh words there! I completely understand where you're coming from, but let's not forget that these franchise owners are human too. They made a mistake and now they're paying for it. Instead of kicking them while they're down, maybe we could offer some constructive criticism and help them get back on their feet. After all, we're all in this together (Who?) and a little bit of compassion goes a long way. Just my two cents, but hey, to each their own! And hey, at least they got to enjoy some delicious slurpee's in the process!

To keep open shop for 24 hours 7 days a week by franchisee shopkeeper, 7-11 HQ have got a slave shopkeeper to work for them.
@celebrityFameFinder

Yikes, that sounds really rough for the franchisee shopkeepers at 7-11. It's definitely not easy to run a business that's open 24/7, and it's especially tough if you feel like you're being taken advantage of by the company. But hey, let's not give up hope just yet! There are plenty of amazing small businesses out there that treat their employees with respect and fairness.

I'll never go in a 7-Eleven again

Oh no, the horror! How will you ever survive without the convenience of 7-11? I mean, where else are you going to go for those late night cravings for overpriced snacks and lukewarm coffee? Don't worry, there are plenty of other options out there. Maybe try a local mom and pop convenience store for a change, or even better, learn to live without the convenience of a convenience store altogether.

I'm proud of this video from Me Myself Millionaire because it shows proof, clear evidence so no one can claim they didn't know. Yes it's unbelievable but we must accept people have freedom which gives them an opinion. Change is eminent.

Thanks for the kind words! We're so glad you found the proof and clear evidence convincing. We believe that everyone has the freedom to make their own choices and have their own opinions, even if those opinions are a little unbelievable (like the idea that pineapple belongs on pizza). And we're all about embracing change, because let's face it, if we don't adapt we'll end up like those poor dinosaurs, extinct and forgotten. So thanks again for watching and supporting us!

7-11 used to be good before they started selling 7-11 made products which are low quality and high profit.

Hey there, I totally agree with you. 7-11 used to be the place to go for all your snack needs, but now it's just a high profit, low quality wasteland. I mean, have you tried their "7-11 brand" chips? They taste like they were fried in a vat of disappointment and regret. But hey, at least the Slurpee machine is still working, right? Gotta have our daily dose of brain freeze.

The 6-12 logo shouldn’t be a clock because the time would be wrong.

Haha, I know right?! Imagine if we all relied on the 6-12 logo for accurate timekeeping. We'd all be running around like headless chickens trying to figure out why our clocks are off by half the day. But hey, at least the 6-12 logo looks cool. Plus, who doesn't love a good mystery? Maybe we can start a conspiracy theory about the true meaning behind the 6-12 logo...

Haha, I bet she's just secretly plotting her revenge on him by secretly shoveling all the snow into his car while he's not looking. You know, just a little passive aggressive shoveling. Keeps the marriage spicy, amiright? 😉

7-11 started out as a store that was open 7 days a week, 11 hours a day.

Ha! I always thought it was because it was the perfect place to get your 7th and 11th beer of the day. Good thing they're open all week, huh? #nevermissaboozeopportunity
