7.3 Godzilla MPG, What’s the best it can do? 

My 7.3 with 456 gear pulling my small 5th wheel on open road is 10.5 gal. Per mile And my 7.3 has proved to be a real work horse and I do believe it’s the best gas engine on the market Thanks for all your info and your content

I learned with my 04 F350 V10, drive it like you want , dont worry about mpgs. It got 12.5 babying it or 11 enjoying the drive. My 22 F250 7.3, 4.30 gears has 21000 miles on it, i have never reset the Trip 2 monitor since new and it shows 11.7 mpgs over its life. This includes all towing, city and highway since new. We live a t a mile above sea level in NM lots of hills and wind. 22 mile drive to work one way daily mixed interstate and city i see 14ish, i dont baby it. Drive it, enjoy it, they sound awesome.

People lie all the time in these internet discussions. Why? Because they want to justify their purchase, mainly to themselves. There is no way in hell anyone is getting anywhere near 20mpg with this engine unless they're only doing 45 mph on the highway all day. ALso, I can't stand these fools who say mileage isn't important in a truck. That's idiotic. Fuel economy is always important to me. No matter what the vehicle is, I always try to maximize efficiency and minimize my fuel cost. That's just common sense, unless you have money to burn.

Just as an FYI ...I rarely run empty but the few times I have with my '21 F350 7.3l F350 3.73 rear I get ~11-13 in the city & ~17 on the Frwy @ 65 -70mph. We have a lot of hills here in the PNW..... Towing a 8400# travel trailer over 8k miles I've averages 10.3mpg. The best has been 13 over a very flat section at 55mph. The worst was 8 with a head wind. I usually tow at ~62 -64mph.

Did a cross country trip this July on my 22 Tremor F-350 7.3. 6100 miles, 2 and 4 passengers and with camping gear piled high in the short bed. 14.3 average mpg, low speeds, high speeds, and everything in-between. I previously corrected my mpg meter with 5 tankfuls. Truck now has 22K, and I've not had any issues with it. I use only premium, and full synth oil. I don't baby my truck, and many miles using cruise control. Around town I get 11.3 average

I have a 19 with the 6.2. Stock I was getting 10.5 around town. I put a daily driver/tow tune on it and now Gerlt round 11.5- 12. The best highway I ever got was 16.8. I've since trimmed the front valence for better clearance after it got scraped up on a few rocks. My best highway now is about 16 (65 - 68 MPH) or between 13.8 - 15 (75 - 78 MPH) depending on conditions. This is in CT, MA, NH driving.

I often make a 200 mile round trip in Idaho with a 2300 ft elevation gain going and the reverse on return. The round trip nets the best MPG in any vehicle I have owned, My 21 7.3 Tremor best MPG has be 14.5 running stock 35's and 4:30's with no load.

It went up to 18.2 for a bit then down to 17.3 and has been between 15.3 and 17.3. I traded 6.7 diesel that I took extremely good care of so the difference not bad as thought. Trip computers are trash. If you don’t calculate your own MPG you don’t know what your MPG is. So kudos for doing that! So many of these videos miss this obvious step.

I have watched many of the Super duty gasser videos. Someday I'll have to replace our 08' V-10 F250 w/ 4:10 gears. We tow a 5000 lb travel trailer and carry quite a bit of gear and firewood most of the time. MPG while towing is typically around 9 mpg. Less if there are long grades to climb and more if it's level highways at 65 mph or less. MPG when we're not towing is usually 14.5 to 15 on the highway. When I can get "real" gasoline with no ethanol, mpg goes up 2 mpg. I'm not willing to pay for recreational gas as they call it around here but in some area like western Canada where real gas was available, the difference in mpg was very noticeable. Truck prices are crazy high so I'll keep going with our 08' F250 but someday I expect our next one will have a 6.2 or 7.3 V-8. Something I've always appreciated about the V-10 is the peak torque (457 lbs) is at 3250 rpm. This engine doesn't have to scream like some V8's do to get the job done. Thanks for the video!

I have a ‘19 F-250 6.2L 3.73 axles. Average 11-12mpg mixed driving. Best I ever got on a long highway drive was 15. Will occasionally get 10 or less when running short distances and/or hauling heavy. Also installed a dump insert into the bed 3 years ago.

Great video I have a Tremor 35s 4.30 I new going in it wouldn't be good. Your right we didn't buy these trucks for the gas mileage. It's about the same as my 02 ram 1500 so I'm used to it. I get 11 all around and about 14 on the highway. Yes I like to know but I am just going to drive it the way I would anything else.

22 f250 7.3l gas La to Co 70 -80 mph 15mpg up 16 down. Same tow 10k 10 mpg up. Can get 18 - to 24 mpg using lite foot from Castle Rock to Boulder.

Chris- Mine is a 2021 F250 Tremor with the 10 speed tranny and 430 rear. Like you I found the best gas milage at 50- 60 mph with straight flat roads. Given those specifics the best milage I got was about 16.5 mpg according to the dash indicator. I actually feel pretty good about that, but that number is easily reduced by any change in the driving dynamic.

My 2022 F350 SRW 4x4 has 62,000 miles. I can eek out 16mpg in eco mode if I set cruise at just under 75mph. I RARELY do that however as down south here everyone is doing 85. At 80-ish I drop back to 15mpg. If I get more sporty and drive it like I want to and just enjoy it for an all day high speed drive I can get 14.5. There’s NO WAY you can get 21mpg with this truck These 7.3 Godzillas get slightly better mpg than the 6.2 gasser got. I just hauled a 15k dump trailer loaded with brick to the dump for my buddy who’s F-150 was not up to the task. For yucks and giggles I set the computer at the start of the 25 mile trip to the dump and I got 10.7 mpg measured by computer alone. By the way we concluded his 2.7 twin turbo F-150 has enough engine to pull that 15k load but my 1-ton FRAME is why you tow with a SuperDuty. If you drive the Godzilla like you stole it you will get 14.5mpg all around town. I drive mine sanely like an old man and I generally get like 15.5-15.9 around town measured pump to pump. But I LOVE to drive it like I stole it. Oh my truck has 3:73 gears and is a long bed. She’s white. My wife calls it The Beluga.

I have a '23 F350 with the 7.3litr and 3:73 tranny... I have seen 18.5 mpg a couple times over 700 and 400 mile round trips while sticking to roughly 65 mph.

I do have a 3.5 ecoboost and considering superduty like you said. I get 22.5mpg at 70mph. Towing (7000lbs) I get 8-11 depending on speed and wind. Pretty sure I cant stomach the fuel costs of the superduty....I only tow about 20% of the time.

Eco mode = boring mode. In my 23 f350 CCLB 4x4 4.30 gears, the best I ever got was 100% highway 55-75 mph it squeezed 15.7. Normal every day driving it stays around 13-14. This is my first gasser since February 1997 & I have zero regrets.

i just watched both videos, not to say anything bad but for people to compare. i have a XL 2020 6.7 10 speed f250 4 door long bed with 3.31 gears, before the 7.3 was an option so no i reason i didnt get a 7.3. but to give you my info, empty hwy i get 18-20 mpg at 1700-1800 rpm at 80 mph, does get better on flat land but im in the foothills. it really doesnt get better to slow down on the hwy, city its 14-15 mpg.. its not the same on the hwy as just running slower in 9th either, i think the way its tuned. but if i am running slower i tend to lock it out in 9th because it seems to keep the dpf filter cleaner, less lugging. normal daily driving def fluid isnt an issue, def tank lasts an oil change. towing a single car box trailer is about 2.5 gallons def for 400-500 miles which is about 3/4 of a fuel tank for me (30ish gallons). i averaged 14 mpg from socal to denver thru NM and back thru utah. half empty and half with a car and parts and i was 5mph over the speed limit as much as possible, up and down and even 85 in the 80 mph zones. the trailer drag itself was the worst part about the mileage. i am looking forward to swapping out the fuel pump for peace of mind but i do have 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty.

Unloaded the diesel is about the same as the 7.3L. And towing they only do about 2mpg better than the 7.3L. That was what sold me, all my family members diesels of all types get like 12-14mpg around town here which is nothing special

Just subscribed your channel, my truck looks identical to yours but has 3.73 gears, at 57 non stop saw 18.5 ,, at 70 on cruise saw 17, around town country comute gets 13.5 ish, everything stock, i was surprised myself.

I have the same truck F250 7.3L 3.55 rear end the truck shows me getting anywhere from 17 to 19 mpg going 60 mph I haven't did the numbers at the pump yet to see if that is correct. City driving is what kills me on gas mileage. Like it does every one else

Until the end of time people will claim, debate, argue and brag about mileage. Issue is there are so many different ways to measure mileage (hand calc, lie-o-meter, instant on highway, tank to tank, etc) not to mention variables between truck options, weight, and more importantly driving style. Honestly I don't care about mileage. I do care about miles between fill-ups. I do care about driving experience. To each their own. (21 F-450 pulling 40ft 17k toy hauler).

*I get average 22 MPG on my F350 w/7.3, all BS aside. But it's a 2000 7.3 powerstroke w/6 sp manual, 5" straight pipe, cold air, chipped and garret power master upgrade.* LOL I also have a E450 class C RV with 6.8 V10 so I was really hoping this video showed stats fully loaded. My E450 only has 16K miles but if the hype on the new 7.3 is true was thinking about looking into a new class C with 7.3. Also hoping they are not DE-TUNING the 7.3 for the RV markets.

Is anyone running 37" tires. If so what are you getting for mpg. My 2017 diesel with 37" tires is getting 15mpg in town and at 75 to 80 mph it's getting 16 mpg.

hey now, i get 12.5, about 9000 miles in a 2024 7.3 gas 3:55 gear 6' bed 5th wheel in bed. I know its not broke in yet but your stating 17 mpg? should I get better?

Two factors on hd trucks that improve mileage is the higher speed rear ends...3.55s and smaller...like a 3.42.Also...stick to 18s or even 17s.

Don't know if this helps, but I can think of one way you can get to 20mpg. I have a 4.7V8 4Runner, which normally gets 19mpg on the highway (20 if you only go 65) -- but bringing it back up to the PNW from the South -- I was running at 70mph behind my dad's Semi truck. By hanging out about 8-15 feet behind his trailer, I was able to reduce all of the head wind and get about 25mpg (27 for one tank!) for the whole 2500 mile trip. Other then that, IDK man -- that's crazy.

That’s about what I get with my 2013 Toyota Tundra with a 5.7 and 4.3 gear.

I have the 2024 F-250 and the best I have done on the highway is 16.5

I'm curious to know if your truck will get better mpg with 93 octane. With higher octane it will give the engine more timing. Timing will give it more power. Less pedal especially when getting up to speed. My bet is mileage will go up. Maybe even enough to pay for the increase in price per gallon.

US gallon or Imperial Gallon. Makes a big difference.

diesels got a lot better gas milage when they had a lot less power and no emissions. like 190hp-215hp. My 6.2 f250 gets 10 empty so if these get 15, then i own the wrong truck. prefer 80 on the highway if none of the tires are out of round. I don't pretend to belive 80psi tires can go high speeds without popping so I stay under 85mph.

I was hoping for the numbers you posted. I have a 16 4.7 SR5 DC 2WD tundra I averaging 12.5 city. I can get it up to 20 Hwy but that's doing 64 mph for hours no stops. Lets face it for payload Tundra is a reliable light duty truck, If I can get the same mpg out of a 7.3 I'm all in now just need to wait for the economic collapse so I can afford one.

The only benefit I see from diesel trucks is the torque. That's it.

Speed kills MPG. The difference between 65 & 75 is massive. Take that from 60 to 80+ and it’s EXPONENTIAL.

People who buy large V8 engines buy them for the horse power and don’t expect great gas mileage. I have a truck with 5.0 L V8 and it goes through $400 a week in fuel and I don’t care 😮😊

My ECO mode seems to save me a good bit of mpg. My ECO mode is still sensitive, but it changes shifting to max at 2.5k rpm instead of 3-3.5k in normal and around 5k rpm in Sport mode. (I have an 8 speed transmission) - The rating says 13mpg city and 18mpg hwy - I rarely get below 20mpg combined and max was 27mpg with mostly interstate driving for one full tank of gas. When you start to care, you realize you're actually accelerating in a number of instances where you don't need to be or shouldn't be.

With my Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi, 8spd 4.10 gears, going up hill into the wind at about 80mph, I could see the fuel level needle move in real time haha just cruising flat around 75 it says i'm getting 17 or 18mpg, but any change and the fuel disappears

17mpgs isn't realistic period at highway speeds above 65mph! I had too test it myself after 3 guys said they saw upper 17's. So I drove at 55 no excessive speeding consistent 55mph and yes I saw 18mpg. But the highway speed is 70 and I got fingered and cut off about 30times almost caused a pile up!

I have a 2016 F350 6.2 3.73gears 6speed trans crew cab with 20" wheels bought new. the best i can get is 14.5mpg highway and 8.6mpg in town. Pulling my 24 foot all aluminum flatbed trailer with 2 can am maverick X3s equipment 8200lbs load I get 8.4mpg avg trip in 2800 miles. My 2018 F350 power stroke 4.30gears with same load 12.2mpg just an FYI keep up the good content!!!

I get a lot of smiles per gallon in my 2022 Tremor 7.3 with Carli E-venture, 37 Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Baja Design lights, Banks, Moto lights, Factor 55 and Warn goodness… I wish people took the energy wasted over gas vs diesel and put that energy toward making America Great Again!

People dont understand instant vs actual. My 3.0l Dmax does fantastic. But I can't claim it's 35-50mpg as actual (due to terrain change). My actual overall is an honest 21-27, leveled on 35s..And I'm at sea level.

I get 12.5 normal driving. I put 93 in cost about 150 ish to fill it. If mpgs crosses your mind buying a truck, buy a tesla.

Also with no load at 56-60 I get about 14.5 mpg

16-17mpg on hwy in a big truck is fairly good. My current truck is a Titan XD with 5L cummins (deleted) and last hwy trip i did was 2500km and average 18.5mpg. with the gas you might pay 10-20 percent more at the pumps, but your not buying def, or spending thousands to get rid of the def sgstem, your buying less oil for servicing, as well as not replacing fuel filters, the added cost to buy diesel motor, or the expensive costs to replace parts on diesel motor, and in Canada diesel fuel is more expnesive. Also in very cold weather it sure is nice in a gas to have a warm cab in a 1/4 the time.

Environment, driving type and habits are huge. Cold weather, Idle time, stop/starts, heavy throttle, and high speeds kill mpg. 2018 f250 6.2 3.73 4x4 Super Cab Long box, air dam in place, tonneau cover. 50deg +/- weather as of late. If I drive fairly nice cruise set at 60, no idle time mostly highway I'm seeing around 15.5 - 16mpg. Towing a few thousand lbs so far I have seen around 10 mpg. Best was a 60 mile trip with a tail wind @ 17.7 mpg, probably could have pulled 18+ if babied but had to pass some vehicles. Mpg meter has shown closer than a tenth for margin of error so far against the calculator. I know where the BS numbers come from, if I took a trip with a pre-warmed engine, reset meter, downhill and a tail wind @ 50mph +/- playing the hills to the best possible advantage I wouldn't be surprised to see 20. If I pulled camper with a lead foot, constant stop and go I could make it under 6mpg. Both are dishonest.

I don’t know that people are lying. I think there are folks who get exceptional mileage out of their vehicles. Let me explain. I have a 2013 F-150 Platinum (heavier than XL is why I state this) loaded with all options including 4x4, Max Trailer, power food/extending tow mirrors and 3:73 gears with electronic locking rear end. I’ve added a hard bed cover and the day I purchased it, I traded in the stock tires for Michelins LTX, M&S tires one size wider, about .5” and a little taller .25” than stock. Once I felt the engine was broke in, I went to full synthetic oil and I only use “Top Tier” regular fuel. I’ve kept a log of mileage since new. When the truck was new I averaged 16 city and 19 highway. There was no bed cover for the first 6 months. Anyway year 2 I found that I was averaging 17 city and 20-21 highway. We live near Cleveland Ohio. My son went to school near Richmond VA for several years. We drove down to see him about 2 times a month. Going to Richmond we consistently got 21.5 mpg driving the 65-70 (what ever traffic was doing) speeds. Coming back to Ohio, we always got 19-20. I don’t know why? Could be prevailing wind? I tried to figure the mileage difference by timing grades and speed limits. Truthfully it’s pretty much the same both ways. Now… I keep the truck washed and waxed, I keep the tires aligned, balanced and with proper air. I also drive with the mind set of making the Powertrain last 350,000-400,000 miles. Today the pickup has 150,000 miles. It’s dropped mileage almost 1 mpg across the board. I’m not certain but think it’s the direct injection / emissions system has probably built up a ton of carbon and oily sludge around the valves?? Someone out there probably knows a lot more than I do. Most people I know who have a similar or newer 3.5 F-150 don’t get as good of mileage. But after riding with them, I know why. Most people accelerate quickly and don’t coast to slow in a manner to avoid stopping at red lights. Also almost every one I know drives faster than the speed limit. One other observation. When we drive between Cincinnati and Louisville Ky I get 22-23 MPG. It’s insane. It’s like a roller coaster up a hill down a hill, up a hill down a hill. The only thing I can figure is the down the hill gets a lot better mileage than the up the hill uses???

We've got a 2019 F350 FX4 longbed, and up here in NM, at 5000ft+ we typically get 13.2 in town, up in the mountains on the highway, with a light load. That's with the stock 34.5" tires, and 3.73 gears. Haven't done a road trip or a long tow on it yet.

The 7.3s are having lifter issues, ive fixed a dozen in the past 2 months

I had a 2022 7.3 F250 with 3.55 axles and got 14 city tops and about 16 or so on the highway.Although I traded it before really braking it in properly so I expect your results are more accurate. I found eco mode really only worked in city stop and go traffic which makes sense since it’s a pedal response system. I traded it for a 2020 F350 diesel which I really like. I would have stayed with the 7.3 had I bought the 350 instead. I needed the payload for a 5th wheel otherwise I actually think power wise it would have been fine. Yes, I’m interested in seeing how it tows your 5th wheel. I happen to think if Ford is successful with this engine, they will pair with a hybrid or turbo charge it to give it diesel number. Given the EPA standards for 2027 and beyond, we may be seeing a big departure from diesel and perhaps the 7.3 will be leading the charge. Just can’t imagine ford will leave this engine plain without some kind of power enhancement.

So, with regards to towing a 7000 lb travel trailer, we traded a F150 on a F-250 4 x 4 with the 7.3 and 3.73 gears. 3 days afterwards we drove to Ocala, FL and observed 15 mpg, highway. Towing the trailer home, in tow/haul mode, MPG under 9, max speed of 60 mph. The truck now has less than 250 miles. Hopefully, it gets a little better. A buddy of mine said that from the factory, the power is reduced until its reached 500 miles. Anyone else know anything about it? Thanks

I'm still learning my 2023 F250 with the base 6.8L with 3.73 gears, averaging about 12 city and 15 highway. I'm interested in finding out if i limit some gears and see if keeping her around 1750 to 2,000 RPM make a significant difference. All my V-8's i used to run at 2,000 RPM and they did well with fuel mileage.

I hv a '21 7.3 with 3.55 axel, I get bout 16-17 mpg on open rd at 65 mph. Around 8-9 mpg at 60-65 mph with 11,00 RV around Durango, Colorado area. At 20.000 miles no issues.

Aerodynamics, going slower will always get you better MPGs, I don’t know the real numbers but for every mph you increase you loose X mpg because it’s harder to push that air, air conditions also play a part, dry air is easier to push a big ol truck thru than humid air.

Trip meter was 400 mi. At 13.5 mpg when you reset it. Done, there you have it, that’s what you get folks.

I only have 3k miles on mine but I can attest to your conclusion that eco seems worse for gas mileage. I am in the 14’s around town now. Was in the 11’s and 12’s before in eco. The motor is still new so I’m hoping it gets better. I did get 16 on an 60 mile highway trip a while back.

My 2018 diesel ford 350 single wheel only gets 13.5 average………and I drive like a old man. I love the ford truck but my dodges always got better fuel economy then my Fords. I’m thinking about getting a mule and wagon now since all new vehicles and service departments suck ass as well as fuel cost. LETS GO BRANDON!
