Definitely doesn't work with a stock 7.3 starter motor. The nose cone is much longer and isn't compatible with the 6.7 starter motors. You got lucky with this starter off your 7.3 having the same length nose cone and an easy swap.
I can't answer for him, but the one remote start that I installed just watched for the voltage to bump up as the signal that the engine was running. IIRC it would crank for a specific length of time and if it didn't start would try again in a few seconds for longer.
