How anything can function at -40 degreees is amazing. Peg the stuff you do to resurrect these vehicles is nothing short of miracles. I'm guessing thats a straight six in the 1980 Ford? I've been told that those engines are near unkillable.

I've got 494,000 on my 300. 4 speed granny and 205 Tcase. Have the Dana 44 and 9" built up with 4.10 gears and lockers. 37/12.5/17 tires. Turned into an offroad rig about 2 years ago. Beat the ever living piss out of it every trail session and she just takes it. Was my daily driver through highschool. Only thing I've done is 4 barell intake/carb, long tube headers, and HEI ignition. Stock unopened high mile engine. Has lived the last few years on the limiter

@@legitdelirium3446 I forgot to put the oil pump driveshaft in one when I was doing distributor work once. Started it up several times trying to figure out where the top end noise was coming from, probably about 20 minutes all told running without oil. Got a sick feeling when I realized my mistake. When I put away the allen wrenches that hex shaft got swept up in them. I found it in the drawer when I realized what I had done. Put it back in, started it and ran it to see if it would develop a rod knock. Might as well have it let go in the driveway instead of on the road. Ticked like a typewriter for about 25 minutes and the lifter noise just suddenly disappeared. I changed the oil after that and it ran fine for another few years. Oil light would come on at idle but it ran perfect for a lot of miles after that.

I also didn't see an engine blow up after a shot of ether yet. It's definitely hard on the rings, though. Cheap diesel engines with flimsy pistons can suffer from broken rings after extensive cosby treatment. A friend of mine had no time to bleed his fuel system and ran the engine with a can of ether until it ran on diesel. After that, one piston was definitely shot. I repaired it. A piece of the crown was missing adjacent to the top ring groove. Engine still ran fine, though. It just burned a gallon of oil in 500miles. So your statement is still totally true, kind of.

the crown fucking off might be random issue, but cosby can be hard on rings - we use dashboard dressing in a spray, it smells nice and has some oil in it.

Hey Peg! If you are looking to move to the states maybe look into Michigan. Here in Detroit we consider Windsor our neighbors and friends. It might be alot easier to get here if you cross in Detroit and then find something you like here. We got a little bit of everything going on here in the mitten and a Huge car guy (and gal) following. If all else fails you can just claim you are from the middle east and they will not only let you in they will even give you grants and sh*t to help pay your way! We call it the party store start up package.

I've never tried a cold start so cold that the oil won't pump up the lifters so the engine won't make compression. I do not envy you all up there in the great white north. A few degrees below zero F or -about 20*C is about all the cold I've ever seen, and even that's too much. That's cold enough if you sniff too fast it'll freeze all the boogers in your nostrils and your nose will be all jacked up for the next month. I cannot imagine what it would be like another 30 degrees colder. My old EFI 300 six fired right up at -4*F temps though. Man I do not miss carburetors at all. Would take me half the morning getting the old 302 to start in the old days.

I love the old 300 fourtrax just buried in snow out there. I know a fact you walk out there and that thing would start first try. I miss my old one, used to have bad seals on the drum brake, it would fill with water sometimes and freeze up. Thing would start no matter what but sometimes wouldn't move, have to stick the propane heater on the drum turn the solid back to a liquid and it'd be minty 👌

Just bought a 90 f350 crew cab 7.3 5 speed 4x4 that’s been sitting since 2013. Put a jumper to it and it fired up as if it were just running a few minutes earlier.. blew my mind how reliable these are
