@@Jrh-rp7np yes really I think even hornady uses 20 inch for their 7.62x39 and in some rounds you dont gain alot of velocity because of pressure look at the 7.62x39 as you mentioned vs like 5.56 that loses 200-300 fps while the 7.62x39 only loses like 100 fps if even on going from 20 to 16 inch barrels

Never gonna happen. Steel case wasn't cheap because the components were cheaper, it was cheaper because Russian/Eastern European labor is cheaper. Not to mention the exchange rate on local currency. That's not even taking into account the insane cost increases on the raw materials, exacerbated bt the constraints the wars in Ukraine/Israel are putting on the ammo supply chain.

Between the less than stellar SDs (for reference Barnaul can rival stuff like IMI 77gr Razorcore SDs and is just low 'teens SD all day) and slower velocities (123gr should run about 2350 fps), it just ain't ticking the boxes. Only upshot is you get a hornady sst loading for 0.55$ instead the usual buck+ whenever you find them in stock Edit: Thanks Matt for reviewing this ammo

I think the point of steel case (Russian) was the fact it was cheap. Not sure AAC can match that, since it's much less volume (compared to Barnaul). If that's the "case" (har har), it might have made sense to use brass anyway due to marginal costs. How much does steel save per case, if steel case production isn't at-scale in first place? Chicken and egg.

As long as AAC 7.62x39 steel case ammo stays under $13 per box (for their FMJ ammo) then I'm a happy camper. For home defense I have a precious supply of Tula 124 gr soft point ammo as well as some PPU round nose soft point ammo that performs MUCH better than this Sabre Black ammo. I think PSA just needs to go to a simple soft point round and not do all the fancy ballistic tip stuff. Sadly even PPU now stopped selling their round nose 7.62x39 soft point ammo and now have a pointed soft point that probably has some kind of ballistic tip like this one. Very disappointing. That being said, this performance is not bad. It just could be a little better. Hopefully PSA will come up with some dedicated true soft-point hunting/self-defense bullets to put into their steel cased ammo. The old Tula SP ammo, in my experience, performed incredibly well on the hogs I shot with it through an SKS. I'd usually "pin" the shoulders and that round would just obliterate the shoulder and lungs.

Great testing as usual 👍 I wish AAC would improve those velocity averages across their ammunition manufacturing line... I know it's not the most expensive ammo for a reason, but paying over 80 cents+ for heavier 5.56 loads including the more expensive Sierra Matchking loads only to have accuracy issues because of inconsistent velocities is slightly disappointing... It's kind of a tough call between buying more AAC with less accuracy or spend a few cents more per round on of one of the many other available 69-77 grain loadings for better velocity consistency when longer ranges really show those shot to shot deviations... I really hope AAC dials this issue in while keeping prices similar as they grow in the market... I have my doubts, but still wistfully thinking. 😉👍

PSA missing the point of the x39 round and its market. I’d say about 10% of ak shooters want this kind of ammo. As much as they love their AKs, their AR is likely their primary. All the majority of us want, I believe, is ammo that has all of the costs cut out of it even if that means the only QC they do is to make sure it’s not going to blow up our rifles. Give me 5 moa, dented cases, backwards bullets, no laquer coating or copper washed jackets. I don’t need any of that but every bit of the cost saving needs to be passed to the consumer or they won’t be buying enough to even make it worth continuing production. I can already tell they’re saving in the powder department with those velocities. I just want something cheap to shoot and hear that AK clack. The goal should be several cpr cheaper than the cheapest 223.

@@BuffRANGE It is very odd that this issue comes up with PSA in their guns, very curious if that was the gun or ammo, I would lean more likely the ammo due to PSA's history. Wonder if that will be the big issue with their first batches of ammo
@BuffRANGE

@@zacharybatten I did just get this SKS and it has like 100 rounds through it. I did have 3 in the BRN-180 but that does have an extra power spring in it. I had a few pierced primers in 308 AAC in my PA-10 and AAC said those are different primers. I would point to the primers as needing a fine tuning :D

Damnit! A little disappointed. My Howa mini action is a true .311" bore. Be nice to score true 7.62x39mm SP/PSP ammo more readily. Limited selection on bullets for reloading too.
@BuffRANGE

I’m guessing with a good measuring device it’s probably .311”

Why do ammo manufacturers always use unrealistic barrel lengths for testing. We can see through the BS.
@BuffRANGE
@BuffRANGE 3 месяца назад
I’m pretty sure 20” is the common barrel length for testing since SKS exists.

It's a plastic, ballistic tip. Armor piercing 7.62X39 is illegal to import or manufacture thanks to Olympic arms making a 7.62X39 pistol back in the early 90s.

Relative to the brass case I tested it was right in line; however combloc stuff yes. Could be the SAAMi vs CIp difference, or the newness of loads and them wanting to carefully step it up?

Sks has killed its operator, suggest you think twice before even shooting one yourself, let alone your son. (If for some reason a live round gets loaded into another live round that is sitting in the chamber and failed to extract then it will slam fire and the brass will fly right into your head and kill you, it's happened before and clearly that sks was having issues so that's a blunder)
