I can't remember who said it, but an author I greatly respect once said that Wodehouse was always his cure for depression.

I just finished Little Men today! I completely agree that it’s the most Charlotte Mason book! I have been so inspired by the Bhaers. I’ve got a lot of commonplace book work to do now. 😅

I've not read that one but am a big fan of Elizabeth Elliot...which makes me think of her brother, Thomas Howard, and I should have also listed Hallowed Be This House. Dang it.

You're reading Austen for your lady of the year, right? If you haven't read Eliot yet, you're in for a treat. I think she's as witty and insightful (in her novels) as Austen!

I never clicked so fast! I'd due in July with my third boy! and I recently got a kindle partly for the purposes of being able to read during middle of the night feedings without having to turn a light on , so I've been wanting so good book recommendations! Being that this is my third boy, I'm definitely going to read Little Men after your description of it! Thanks!!

Thanks, Autumn! My first child is about to turn one tomorrow, so my postpartum was a while ago, and oh I would’ve loved this then! I wish I would’ve spent my postpartum wiser by feeding my mind whilst feeding my baby. Instead I tended to gravitate towards screens. Regardless, these are great recommendations and I think I’ll go pull my lovely vintage edition of “Little Men” off the shelf for its first reading!

Love these recommendations! In addition to my newborn, I have a 4 year old and 2 year old. (Basically, I’ve been postpartum for four years straight. 😂) Our lives seem to revolve around books-and I love that! Where/how do you source all the lovely hardback copies of these books? A gorgeous physical book just elevates the entire experience.

Hahah! Postpartum for four years straight. I was similar. I had my three in 3.5 years... I am a book hunter. I really believe my library is an inheritance for my children and generations to come! When I first started to build, it was more about getting the right books in the house, but now, I spend a lot of time hunting for certain copies. Here's a video on how I built our classical library on a budget: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1ky00Kxqt34.html

Well I just had my 7th so this is perfect. I whole heartedly agree on Little Men being CM education played out. My kids have their own garden plots thanks to that book. I picked An Old Fashioned Girl to read postpartum and asked for it for my birthday last year. I recommend it as well!

Congratulations to you! It's one of those old ones, yes, but not an original/first! It's the fourth edition. The earliest edition I've found was an 1890s copy of "Lecture to Ladies" and I thought the title was so fun (I lecture to ladies, kind of.) but it was in poor condition and I passed over it. I believe it's still on the market!

Thanks for the titles! I love being introduced to new authors. I just had my 6th baby 4 months ago (so am exiting the intense postpartum phase). My first book that I finished was a re-read of one of the Fairacre series by Miss Read. I just needed a delightful trip to the English countryside!

I think Peter Pan would also be a great choice. It deals very beautifully with the nature of childhood and its relationship to motherhood. It’s also wonderfully written, I recommend it just in general for that. The narrator’s voice is so distinctive and delightfully cantankerous, and such a fun contrast to the children protagonists.
@thecommonplacehomeschool

FANTASTIC recommendation. I've mentioned Peter Pan before in one of these videos as a door into the world of boys (Boys are mysterious; even grown men don't understand them...is what I think Chesterton said.) and a way to understand the child-like nobility behind their actions. Definitely a great postpartum read.

Does Little Men live up to Little Women? I recently finished my umpteenth reading of LM. I know I read either Little Men or Jo's Boys but at a time when I was very distracted or something. I don't remember anything about it. Oh, I'm supposed to love the Space Trilogy and... my brain just wasn't grasping the first book. And then I was even dumber and sold or donated the bindup I had. I KNOW! I will fix this one day. General question - Do the Everyman editions have exceedingly small print? I've heard that and it makes me want to cry because they look so beautiful! I've only ever seen them in videos.
@thecommonplacehomeschool

I think it does! Admittedly, I think it's also my season of life, you know? Little Women was my book best friend as a teenager/young adult. But Jo mothering so beautifully in Little Men? That's my jam in this season of life and I love her for growing up in front of me and leading me on such a good path.

Hahaha! I also like to freeze on people's shelves so I get it...especially if you enjoy their book recommendations! Honestly, the name change will probably better serve the goal of helping people connect with books! "Mother culture" is such an easily targeted phrase for Charlotte Mason homeschool moms (my primary audience but certainly not the only ones invited to the party) but, outside of that group, makes zero sense.
