The plasma cutter from Dead Space. When you first acquire this weapon, there's nothing really special about it, but but spend enough power nodes and the plasma cutter will become the only weapon you'll need as it will have excellent damage, ammo capacity and reload speed.

In the original Fable, the frying pan had 4 augment slots that allowed you to massively buff it's pretty weak stats. If you did all the augments in one go you could even add a fifth augment.

Parasite Eve allows you to move bonuses between guns. One or two New Game+ runs (especially with the Super Toolbox) can easily boost your starter pistol to something that can one-shot any boss in the game.

Crimson Blitz from Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 It's one of your 3 starting weapons. Starting level damage. And it has no special abilities to make it worth using over basically anything else. However, if you complete the 4 Trials at the very end of the game, just before the final boss, it will be upgraded to the Ultima Weapon until you finish the game. It has the highest ATK of all weapons in the game, and only a couple NG+ weapons come even close.

If anyone here has played Salt and Sanctuary, the Haymaker is an absolute monster. It’s the first scythe, which you get after two bosses, and it’ll easily take you through the endgame!

Wait, this doesn't have the Copper Shortsword from Terraria? It can be used as part of the crafting recipe for the Zenith, alongside a bunch of significantly more legendary swords... And its model is physically still in the sprite of the rainbow-glowing apocalyptic sword storm you get as a reward. It's specifically in there because it's the first and arguably crappiest weapon you get and the thought of chucking it into the ultimate sword-vortex of hyperdeath was really funny.

FFVI's Atma Weapon.. pretty basic laser sword that deals ok damage when you first find it, but becomes one of the most powerful swords in the game (I think it scales with your current or max hp or something? I forgot the exact details I haven't played it in decades) but yeah you go from hundreds of damage to the max, 9,999 by the time you've leveled enough.. And that's way before the end of the game, too

I like the spoon in Payday 2, it's a great soup-ort weapon!

The Ladle from Summon Nights Swordcraft Story. A joke weapon introduced relatively early in the game that can be upgraded to one of the most durable and fastest swords in the game with a Tech cap of 255

Would have figured Vampire Survivor weapons would be on it. The entire game is basically about upgrading weapons into something absolutely ridiculous. The basic whip you start with can become one of the most useful weapons in the game as it also heals you and if you merge it twice it's damage output is massive too. Peachone starts of really weak but combine it with the Ebony Wings and especially in the early game you can nearly solo the game with it. 4 Seasons starts off a bit sus but especially once you evolve it, it is bound to top the DPS list at the end

Robocop’s Auto 9 in Rogue City may be the default gun but its OP to begin with and you can upgrade it to unlimited no reload ammo. Why use anything else? 😅

Had to scim quickly cause i didnt see a warning for it, but the mauser in black ops 2/3 zombies, specifically the origins map, becomes in an insane weapon when you pack a punch it.

Upgrading the Muramasa is a cool mechanic but unfortunately it's in the same game as the Crissaegrim which is so stupidly broken it's a question of why wouldn't you just use that?

In Dragon's Dogma the rusted weapons you start with (and that you want to change into something better as soon as possible) can be dragonforged, thus gaining the "torpor" ability, which slow down any enemy you hit, making essentially any fight much easier!

Everytime I played OG dead space I never bothered with any of the games besides the plasma cutter, so good on dead space remake for making the different weapons essential for different killing utilities

Secret of Mana has the Rusty Sword. By the end of the game it's strong enough to wreck the Mana Beast--a screen-filling, six-wing Dragon.

I loved Dirge of Cerberus, it was weird and fun. 2 playthroughs maxing different weapons. That Rosso fight brought back memories.... ugh.

Another one Castlevania - Potrait of Ruin - Vampire Killer: What, the legendary whip is BASIC? Well at the start of the game yes, it's your first weapon for Jonathan and it is "sealed" to protect it's non-direct belmont linage wielder (Sorry the Morris Family aren't the direct line it seems, just a branch family) from being consumed by it. However near the end of the game if you undertake the challenge to defeat a spiritual rendition of it's last true bloodline wielder, Richter, the whip will unseal itself and unleash it's full power, giving you a needed edge against the dual final boss.

Don't forget Super Mario RPG! Mario's basic jump attack increased its damage every time you used it. If used as often as possible, it can easily become one of the most devastating moves in the game by the time of the final battle.

What? No M1911 from COD Black Ops? It’s iconic!

While it's cool and all that Symphony of the Night has some very good weapons, _most_ of the game's bosses suffer from having _woefully_ insufficient HP, meaning there is never any real need to actually _bother_ obtaining better weapons - the game is reasonably beatable using exclusively the Short Sword (something I've done once), and in fact the boss fights manage to actually _feel_ more like boss fights if you do this. The only bosses who actually have (actually _more_ than) reasonable HP are Dracula himself, the game's superboss Galamoth, and I'd also count Olrox. Otherwise, if you've been equipping the best attack power that happens to be available to you, your average "boss" in this game is going to crumple in seconds with just a few quick pokes. It's kind of funny, because you _do_ definitely need to get better _armor_ throughout the game, or you will die quickly and easily - potions and food don't even save you a fair chunk of the time because there is a _delay_ between hitting the button and actually _getting_ your healing. I love SotN, and it defined "metroidvania," but the game absolutely has its share of odd design decisions.

In Skyrim the ebony blade has pretty low base attack but its enchantment upgrades when you kill people who trust you. Slaughter enough beggars and companions and the sword will siphon 30 points of health per hit which is a lot because it swings faster than other two handed swords so long as you haven’t patched that glitch out.

Arguably you could say the Khovostov from Destiny 1 It starts as a reliable grey weapon that falls off as soon as you get better gear but if you did the quest it comes back in full force as a exotic PVP main staple. While there are definitely better guns for every category it is reliable consistently. Also D2 has it now.

The 10 mm from Deus Ex Human Revolution. Starts out as baby's first firearm, but has so many upgrade slots that you can easily take it into the endgame. Silencer + armor piercing is great for stealth, as you can kill any non-boss human with one headshot while staying undetected.

I would have put the 10mm pistol from fallout 4 on this list, With the right modifications it can be turned into a silenced high damage weapon or a rapid fire Uzi type weapon.

The Cutter in Starfield. If you upgrade your Laser Weapons skill to max rank, your laser weapons get a chance to set someone on fire, which rather than doing extra damage, does a set percentage of max health over time. This effect can stack too. And as the cutter is a laser weapon with an incredibly high fire rate, it adds a lot of burn stacks very fast, melting practically any enemy in seconds.

I like to think the engine blade oscillates, allowing it to more easily cut through enemies like a motorized turkey cutter knife

Only one of those I know about is the greatsword of artorias because I always aim for the big swords in literally any game that has one (except maybe that silent hill game that lets you equip Pyramid Head's one, that is very useless).

Badelaire gets stronger the more you play. Shields can use super attacks and sword familiar becomes a sword and a strong one. Muramasa is not the only broken one

I’ll also throw in The Punisher from RE4. A decent handgun with some added penetration is useful but loses out to the power of over guns and other weapons have penetration qualities too. Upgrade to max however and that penetration gets amped up to going through 5 enemies at once and becomes one of the best crowd control weapons in the game.

Does the Master Sword in Skyward Sword count?

Can we include _Cave Story_ or is that better suited for a different list? The first gun you acquire in the game is the "Polar Star". At its initial level, it has a short range and the lowest possible damage, both of which do receive modest (but welcome) improvements as you collect experience crystals (standard for all weapons). Upon befriending an NPC in the game's desert cavern, they offer to swap this gun for their machinegun, which is immediately superior in DPS and range (and whose recoil can even be used as a double-jump at max level). HOWEVER, if you keep the Polar Star (despite the more powerful weapons) and, late in the game, return to the beginning, the NPC that you (ahem) "borrowed" it from will be impressed by how much you've put it through and upgrade it to the "Spur" -- one of the best weapons in the game, chiefly because of its ability to charge shots.

One of the most crucial additions of the Dark Souls DLC, was the ability to meet Sif in the past, and in doing so, being able to beat the game without having to kill her back in the future.

No mention to Fina's Cupil in Skies of Arcadia? The quest to find all Chams yielded a Cupil with and Atk of +500 Hit 100% (strongest weapon in the game) and, in its final form, Cupil hoovers the enemy Kirby-style and spits it back out. Even with the nerf in Legends (where it's +300), it was still pretty powerful.

How about the M1911 in COD zombies? Once upgraded in WAW, it becomes a rocket launcher, and from Black Ops onward, it becomes a pair of grenade launchers.
