Today I chauffeured my wife to an eye doctor appointment. I put on a dress shirt, tie sport coat, nice trousers and highly mirror-shined shoes. She looked at me and said, "I feel important." I asked what she meant, and she said that I had dressed up so nicely that it left her feeling important, that my sartorial efforts made her feel valued. I told her she well deserved it. Dress is important everywhere. All the time. And sometimes with unexpected results. By the way, the jacket and shirt (Brooks Brothers) were from Ebay. Thank you for your lead and encouragement, Ash. You are a blessing.

“Bearing,” is a U.S. Marine Corps leadership trait. When the world is falling apart all around you, but if you walk into a room full of panicking people standing straight up, with a smile, cool as a cucumber 🥒… they will look at you and begin to calm down! Once you arrive, take charge by saying, “listen up! This is how we are going to defeat Godzilla…”

Maybe two more tips: 1: Have a look into the mirror before you leave the house. It may save you from taking for a walk some embarrassing mistakes. 2. Always make use of a clothes brush to remove lints.

Your tie, shoes and perfume can convince those around you that everything you're wearing is worth far more than it really is. If it's well pressed, polished and fits well, the psychological effect of the accessories surpasses the reality of the rest of your outfit. Add a nice watch at around $500aud and all but the top 1% will think you've spent far more on your outfit than you have.

Unless you’re going to a wedding or some sort of formal function a boutonniere, especially a faux flower is somewhat clownish. Particularly on a sports jacket.

Great advice once again! As for shoes: shoes are important, yes I polish my shoes the lazy way... building it up every week so not investing too much time initially (hence my sometimes lacklustre polish on newer shoes displayed here😆) but equally important is the state of repair of the soles and especially (since it's instantly recognizable) the heel-blocks. You can buy a cheaper or used shoes with decent upper leather and if you are willing to invest a little (that's only a little *time* in my case... but I have access to a bespoke shoemaker's workshop) in replacing the heels and often the half soles it will yield results that suggest a much more expensive shoe. I rarely wear expensive shoes at work for obvious reasons but they have decent uppers and so I throw some JR heels on them for ~10€ and often some sort of 2mm protector on the half-soles and if even remotely decently polished they instantly look like at least ~100pound more expensive. And they last longer than ~2 months, which is how long a cheap leather sole lasts with my quasi-Prussian habit of having a... resounding... gait.🤣 Ironing is a skill every gentleman *should have,* *it's *not* a "female thing". Fragrance-wise I always advice a fragrance-less deodorant (ideally a cream one) in the morning to avoid sweat and then throw a scent on as advised here if you are new to it. I'd always suggest a EDP over EDT but if price it a question (and you don't have access to or knowledge of "the clones", and they can also be a bit pricey sometimes) choose a nice EDT and carry it with you so as to renew the scent after a couple of hours, especially in the summer. And I just have to comment on colour - *black is not the end all of masculinity* - sounds weird but I've seen this so many times and done it myself in the olden days (we're talking late teens here), yes I wear a *ton* of grey suits (I have *seven* in various greys and patterns) but I wear them with a pink shirt and fitting accessories, or tone everything down into the cooler spectrum and go with a navy tie and blue accessories, or red or purple, the possibilities are endless... and that's just for grey. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

Personally, I like low contrast such as Cary Grant in North by Northwest. I also saw him once in the early 80s at what was then the old MGM commissary in a black suit (perfectly tailored, of course), black shoes, black tie, white shirt, black horned-rimmed glasses, full head of white hair and a deep tan. Absolutely stunning. On watches, I've had Rolexs but have to say that my Pixel Watch 2 is really something. I don't see myself ever going back to a regular time piece.

Now that I remember it I do get compliments on color of the items I’m wearing either a purple bow tie. Red polo shirt and orange/brown chinos, green vest, pink pocket square. I like to contrast the trousers I’m wearing with the shirt or jacket or sweater I’m wearing. I’m use to wear grey, blue, green, browns but try to build my way to wear the more boulder colours I have more often like red, pink, & glen check trouser I have.

I agree with you, Ash, that cleaning and polishing shoes, ironing shirts and trousers, having clothing tailored to fit properly, and wearing a memorable scent are all inexpensive ways to boost one's sartorial style. One of my favourite parts of getting dressed in the morning is selecting a colourful tie and pocket square that coordinates with my sport coat or suit and shirt. -I love ties and pocket squares with colourful paisley or geometric patterns, and I feel that these accessories take any outfit to a higher sartorial level. My steel and gold Rolex Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet with a black dial is really the only piece of jewelry that I wear, and can be dressed up or down to go with just about any outfit. A sense of self-confidence, conveyed through posture, gait, grooming, etc., will complete the positive impression you are going to make on others by being well-dressed. -By the same token, an obvious lack of confidence will undermine your appearance even if you are wearing a bespoke Saville Row suit.

I suggest a chap have a portable steamer, which doesn't cost a lot. I almost never have to iron my dress trousers: Once the cleaners have put a crease in them (I have my trousers dry-cleaned once a year unless I spill something on them) I just steam them after wearing to remove wrinkles. A steamer is also great for removing wrinkles and creases from ties; you don't want to iron ties.

Great video as always! I could ad starching your shirts. I think not only looks better and smarter but is the best way to prolong the life of a garment. It protects against spilling and dirty in general, makes easy to wash and make it crisp!

That's a great jacket you're wearing today, Ash. (Thanks for the tips too.) Every once in a while I come across a man wearing a jacket or other garment that just seems to work particularly well for him, that I hadn't previously considered wearing for myself. Sometimes it's someone you see on TV or the movies, sometimes its someone you see in a social or business environment. Sometimes it's just someone you pass in the street. Inspiration is fantastic. But proceed carefully when trying to recreate that look for yourself. Not all colours, textures, and shapes work for all men. I could never make the banded-collar shirts that were popular a few years ago work with my face and body. Ditto for Henley shirts. And I know from experience that there are certain colours that just don't work with my skin and hair tones.

Or wearing shoes that are a throw back to older days. Or putting a splash on color in my suit jacket and wearing a nice tie clip I paid 9 dollars for on amazon. women like well put together with a sense of style and when you look good you naturally feel more confident and walk taller. Not to disparage those who mirror shine their shoes, but I don't care for that look. I did that in the Navy, and feel it looks ostentatious. It does stand out, but to be stands out in a way that screams a desire for attention. I prefer a rich gleam. That is well shined shoes which glow, showing attention and care, but stop short of trying to get people to notice.

When you're in Dublin try KEVIN & HOWLIN, 31 Nassau Street, Dublin for excellent tweeds and headwear. In London make sure you visit BATES Headwear, in 73 Jermyn. They 're definitely not cheap, but well worth a visit. Also, James SMITH, umbrellas in 53 New Oxford St, and SWAINE. ADENEY & Briggs, also umbrellas and luggage in 18-19 Burlington Arcade (off Piccadilly) and 127 New Bond Street. Then there is CORDINGS, gentlemen's outfitters in 19 Piccadilly. At 181 Piccadilly there is FORTNUM & MASON, a delightful old fashioned department store. And a bit off the beaten track is BERRY Bros & RUDD, a traditional wine merchant at 3 St. James Street. As most of the shops are fairly close to each other you should not have any difficulty in cramming them in. Enjoy your stay!

Im slightly older than you and agree with about 99% of what you say ,except judging others by their clothes. I dress for myself and wear what I want and don't care what people think I don't judge people on their shoes or tastes to boost my own ego up. I take people by how they are to me not by how they look, I was brought up to treat the janitor the same as the ceo. Strength of character is nothing to do with your style

These are all good tips Ash, but never forget that beauty lies within. Anyone can polish shoes, spray on some aftershave and get their shirts pressed. But they may be a complete cad or facile or untrustworthy or worthless human being. To be a true gentleman requires something considerably more than attention to the superficial, the contrived, the obsession with appearance. It goes much deeper in my view. Knowing how to act, how not to act, to have honour, integrity and manners is, to me, a thousand times more important than if their tie clashes with their pocket square or if their shoes are unpolished. There may be many reasons other than money for this, maybe they are a full time carer for their mother, maybe their wife is dying from cancer, maybe they have four kids under 10 to deal with.
