I've lived in Portland and traffic is much worse than it was just 10 years ago. Vancouver is much easier to drive around in. But being out in Stevenson now, we get your rush hour traffic on weekends. Sometimes takes 5 minutes just to get on the main stretch through town from a parking lot.

Good to know! Thanks for commenting and watching. For sure, the further you get away from the cities the less traffic there is.

Someone from Vancouver Canada here. Only know of this place because Vancouver Washington often pops up on search engines. Plus someone commented recently that the 50 Shades movies (admittedly I worked a bit on them LOL) said Vancouver Canada was posing as Vancouver Washington. Said person also said they've been to both Vancouvers and found it a bit of a insult to compare Vancouver Canada to Vancouver Washington. That said, I'm curious to learn more about the US version of Vancouver. I'm assuming it's more dirtier since that's always the first remark people from the US says about Canada as a whole. That it's like a cleaner version of their cities.

I am very skeptical about the palette housing which seems like an overpriced solution ($8k for a single box?) vs just housing people in a large building converted to a shelter (no drugs allowed) and enforcing the camping ban. I feel our elected don’t understand the urgency of the situation and are enriching these contractors who build this very inefficient housing. I own a house here (bought last April!) and I’m hoping to become more involved on this issue because we need to reclaim the burnt creek trail! It could so beautiful and safe, happy place for our kids but it’s festering with drugs and crime now and our elected do not care

I've lived in Vancouver my entire life, 30 years. You are right about everything. The two worst things I've noticed are the homeless coming here from Portland and bring drugs and crime. The other biggest issue is there are a lot of areas that are being over developed while at the same time there are other areas that are falling apart. I definatly think the community needs to come together and fix the problems in our town regardless of class or political ideology.
@LivingInVancouverCamasWash
@LivingInVancouverCamasWash Год назад
Thank you for your insights and for watching! Together is better, for SURE! How we develop & build is always of concern. It is tough because no matter what, people will have competing/opposing interests (it's just the way of the world) so the question is how can we develop housing that benefits the most people? We cannot stop development because we do need more of it (need more homes desperately) and the county gets stricter with development laws with each passing year. It is a complicated problem for sure.

The homeless bring the street crime, the white collar crime is already there... In fact, one might go as far to say the town was built on it... From their kangaroo court system to the jail itself and don't get me started on the county commissioners. One time one of them got drunk, crashed his car into several other cars in the parking lot, went inside Safeway with a loaded gun yelling for more alcohol and got off with a speeding ticket... It is also a town with bridges, not as many as Portland, but a few... In fact if you ever want to push someone off one of those bridges, as long as you know the right people, you can and you won't even get arrested or have to spend a day jail, even if it's on video. Have fun kiddos, good luck

Sorry to hear that. I have never been to Phoenix. I'm aware that the riots did not "cause" the homelessness, but they certainly accelerated it a lot. Reach out if you need more info on the Vancouver, WA side, I've got you covered :)

@@LivingInVancouverCamasWash I'll definitely reach out. I'm going to be visiting at the end of October. May I ask how the riots there accelerated homelessness? Here in Phoenix, it was caused by the rise in rent and housing while the cost of living adjustment not going up fast enough.

I'm from the big sister of Portland: Seattle. Very similar in that both are Bolshevik dystopian hellscapes in a death spiral that nearly doubles every year. The #1 issue by a large margin is fentanyl. You think you have it there? We have you beat in spades. None of the homeless want help, and they're all addicts, with a few lunatics tossed in. Yes, there are a few dozen homeless families that take advantage of the surplus of programs we offer, but the camps remain because literally 100% of the people there refuse housing. I'm not exaggerating. The dearth of independent businesses began when the rampant theft and vandalism from addicts paired up with the theft and vandalism from the riots. Many businesses couldn't justify losing money every month while they couldn't promise their customers or staff a safe environment or travel to/from their business. The lockdowns killed small businesses while allowing massive businesses to remain open. All together, you can see how they all contributed to the terminal state of Portland. I'm very familiar with Vancouver, have been for forty years. Honestly, about twenty years ago it was struggling and a little depressing from adjusting industrial shifts, and I wrote it off. I visit regularly and just last week spent some time there. Very impressed. They cleaned up a lot, many newer, independent places have opened, the waterfront is great, but so were smaller neighborhoods I visited. The people are pretty nice too. Yes, there was some oozing of vagrants from Portland, but it was scattered and not a monolithic as I'm used to. The people there also aren't as stupid as the people in Portland and Seattle, so those I spoke with seemed totally aware of how to avoid the fate of their neighbors. Avoid Seattle, avoid Portland, but Vancouver is worth checking out. Keep in mind Washington State will be getting a state income tax soon, so don't be swayed by our lack of one at present. Funny, there's an exodus of people from Washington going to Arizona, also Montana and Idaho. Best of luck and you have to try Burgerville!

I have a job opportunity to manage an office that spans from Salem to Vancouver but is located in Portland. Thinking about living in Vancouver and driving to portland for work. I just can’t bring myself to live in Portland. In my opinion other than San Fran Portland is probably one of the worst cities for drugs and homelessness. I currently live in Redmond WA. So far Redmond has been awesome! I almost want to pass up the management position just because I don’t want to live near Portland 😬

Behind every homeless person are irresponsible parents and a dysfunctional system... Cuba does not have a homeless problem, the reason why is because families stick together instead of dumping their problem family members on the community. Cuba has beggars and everyone is poor under communist rule but because the cuban people learned to care for eachother everyone has a roof to sleep under at night.

I used to live there, and I agree with you about the public transportation in Clark County. C-Tran really needs to become part of TriMet (QuadMet?) and provide the same level of service on both sides of the river. Who knows, this may even attract a major employer to the area.

@@LivingInVancouverCamasWash Camas collects tax revenue from homeowners who's kids do not get to be part of the elite camas school district. Union high is in evergreen district even though the residents immediately around it pay their taxes to camas. Camas should take on responsibility of the school since it's taking, well, the money.
