I really like Short Stories in German for Beginners by Olly Richards and Alex Rawlings. It has a range of short stories written at an A2-B1 level, it has 8 short stories in a range of genres. Then at the end of each chapter it gives a synopsis of what happened with a vocabulary list and comprehension questions. And when it comes to grammar I am a mixture of "the grammar nerd" and someone who likes to learn from context and simply using the language with partners/tutors and getting corrected. The majority of my learning comes from immersion and speaking but I use a grammar book to help supplement things that don't make sense to me. I am really bad with understanding grammar rules, but I find that when I read grammar rules after exposing myself to a heap of the language I can learn them almost instantly because they explain what I already half knew. As such I really like the short stories and reading approach to learning and will definitely give Dino Lernt Deutsch a go.
Vielen Dank! I recently purchased the first book of Dino Lernt Deutsch, (A Cafe in Berlin) as I wanted to improve more of my German reading. I realize that my Reading and my listening with the language I am rather lacking in. I can understand bits and pieces but I still get overwhelmed and that anxiety of making a mistake and not being correct really bugs me. I am so looking forward to getting the book 😊
I also borrowed the books from my local German library when I was living in Germany (Going to be back soon 🤞) I agree with what you said in regards of Grammar. I am too a grammar nerd and I want to get better at understanding the grammar system, making up sentences (something I really need to work on - I think in English and yeah it isn't exactly the same system when saying/writing in German) it was called 'German Grammar in a Nutshell' (Herr Antrim - I believe it was in your Amazon storefront! 😊 - highly reccomand that book!) I also purchased 'The Everything Essential German book' by Edward Swick and also thought that getting a universal dictionary would be beneficial as well so I purchased 'Langenscheidt Universal Dictionary German' - Langenscheidt. I really enjoy your videos Herr Antrim. I only recently found them as they popped up on my youtube home page but you have been such a great help with my German thus far!
German Grammar in a Nutshell is another great book. It is in my storefront, but it isn't in the video, as I don't personally own a copy. I just borrowed it for a bit to see what it was all about.
Thanks for this. GRAMMAR. My go-to is Hammer's, 4 ed. And Langenscheidt's Pocket Grammar, 1998 ed, has a combination of completeness and convenience that's hard to beat. PRONUNCIATION. Chris Hall's Modern German Pronunciation, 2 ed, is a fab one-stop-shop for native anglophones. It helps to know IPA, but even if you don't, the consonant and vowel pronunciation how-to's are crystal clear. The chapters on stress, intonation and conversational speech (assimilation, elision, glottal stops, etc.) are superb.

In October I finished Assimil's B2 German course. The recordings are very good and the audio is in German only. It's mostly a dialogue-based method. They introduce grammar in bite-sized chunks and go further into it every 7th day and in the grammar section at the back of the book. There are no vocabulary lists to master. I also have their C2 book, but the language of instruction is French, and I'm a B2 at best in that language. Still, if you want to go well past beginner level German, you can't go wrong with the C2 book and audio. I also like the video series (A1, A2, B1) 'Nicos Weg' which follows a Spanish immigrant's experiences in Germany. It's available here on RU-vid and there are no subtitles.
Thanks for the info. I haven't tried Assimil. Nico's Weg is awesome for German learners. There is even a full course available for free on Deutsche Welle's website that goes with all 3 parts.
I have read Angelika Bohn's books and found them entertaining. She also wrote a book about her experiences as a teacher of German (not intended for German learners). It is called Wem die Deutschstunde schlägt: Eine Lehrerin erzählt. Have you read that? I also found useful English Grammar for Students of German, by Cecile Zorach, Charlotte Melin and Elizabeth A. Kautz. The next book is unfortunately no longer in print, but if you can find it, it might be useful/entertaining: Deutsch macht Spaß - An easy to understand German grammar review with Hagar and Peanuts cartoons in German, by Brigitte S. Dubiel.
I have not read that other book by Angelika Bohn. I thought about it, but just never did for some reason. I think I might have a copy of Deutsch macht Spaß that I inherited when I got my classroom, but I ignored most of the books that were in the room, as they were almost all ancient.
A book you could get is called a DK visual bilingual book of german how ever nothing about grammar but has at least 6000 words it has some phrases as well it is good for items and is separated by categories of what the object is
Thanks for the reading list. I found your number 1, 2, & 4 on ebay from a used book store that supports a charity. All in very good condition, and at far less than the amazon price. My first book for learning German came from a guy who started making videos to help his students in class, then started making them for fun, & next thing you know he's got 100,00 subscribers on RU-vid! Learning German through Storytelling: Baumgartner & Momsen Detective Stories ... Book by Andre Klein is a favorite of mine. I wish there were more episodes.
Thank you for the resources. I have been looking for a German vocab book that is grouped by themes and topics. Though I was very excited about the book "Mastering German Vocabulary: A Thematic Approach" but later I found that there is no plural form of the nouns included which is crucial when learning the nouns. We should also learn the plural form of the noun with gender. Do you recommend any other vocabulary book which solves this? Or how to rectify this issue if we have no other option?
I would rely on an app like dict.cc or leo.org to look up the plural forms. I haven't found a book that does what Mastering German Vocabulary does and includes the plurals.
At the C1 and C2 levels you should be able to read pretty much anything you want. Don't look for books written for German learners at that point. Just find books that interest you. Books that expand your knowledge not just on German but in general.
@@MrLAntrim Thank you. I have been reading the Deutsche Welle daily and doing ok with it. Der Spiegel is more difficult, however, especially the longer articles.

I think some German grammar books ought to be only in German, once at mid levels (so B1 and above.) The top recommendations I've received from my own German teachers here in Germany: "Lehr- und Übungsbuch der deutschen Grammatik - aktuell - Die Gelbe aktuell", by Dreyer, Schmitt (there are dual-language editions of this one) "C-Grammatik: Übungsgrammatik Deutsch als Fremdsprache, Sprachniveau C1/C2", by Buscha, Szita, Raven.
I agree that around B1 you should switch to full immersion. Before that it doesn't make much sense, but after B1 you should be able to understand the terminology well enough to follow along and the experience will be much better. I have not heard of those two books, but I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy here in the USA.

I think that would be incredibly tedious. Hammer's Grammar is better as a resource when you come across something in your learning that you want to know more about. It's not much of a page turner. At least the "Grammar for Dummies" series makes things entertaining. Hammer's Grammar is incredibly dense and dry. Keep it on a shelf and when you need more info on a topic, pick it up and find it in the index. Read a few pages about that topic and then put it back on the shelf.
Our school used to have Emil und die Detektive as part of the curriculum in our German 3 classes. I thought it was an interesting book and decent for learning vocabulary and phrasing, but the general story and everything is out of date, which makes it slightly more difficult to justify for learning purposes. Bottom line: There are better books. Angelika Bohn is better.

i bought Dino lernt Deutsch, i am still halfway through A1. i find it overwhelming to understand after the second story. what level is it supposed to be?
I am not familiar with this book, but it has over 3000 Amazon reviews with 84% of them 5 stars and most of the rest are 4 stars. I might order a copy for myself and see what it is like. My only hesitation is that the first version on Amazon is from 2013.
