I'm working on One Dark Window, from your recommendation, and I love it! I've been keeping a list of the books you guys recommend, (the ones I may like, anyway) and it's about to overtake my notebook. Every time I think I know what I will read next, I find another enticing recommendation from you two. Between you guys and my author husband I will never get caught up! Thanks!
I remember enjoying High Fidelity the movie. I’ll put the book on my tbr. I love Hemingway’s short stories. His granddaughter was great in movies like Bad Moon. I’ll probably read Ray Kurzweil’s new book soon. And my first Grady Hendrix. Great vid! 📚📚📚📚📚👍🏻
The "East of Eden" book is fantastic! The movie is actually only a small part of the book. I think you both might enjoy it. Thanks for the videos, I add to my book list whenever you post them.
I just finished The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs. I found it in a local thrift store and based on the title( I’m a knitter) I grabbed it. I enjoyed it! It was an easy read set around a knitting shop with a few twists and turns. It got mixed reviews on Goodreads, so I’m glad I didn’t look at them before I read the book as I liked it 😄😄 Excellent video as usual 👍👏😄❤️❤️📚
I'm currently reading Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile about Churchill/WWII, etc. I recently bought The Demon of Unrest and can't wait to start it. I'm also reading War Outside My Window: The Civil War Diary of LeRoy Wiley Gresham (he's a teenage boy who lived in Georgia with his family who owned plantations and slaves). I have also purchased Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. Just finished a re-read of Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, going to be starting the next book in that series soon. So many books, so little time!!!!!!!!
Totally get that feeling. Love some Erik Larson. He does a great job of story telling in nonfiction. Glad to see you picked up Neverwhere. Such a good story.
I'm currently on a trashy romance kick, but I also plan to reread Eragon this month! I haven't read it since I was a kid, but I've heard it stands up even as an adult read. Tayler, a fantasy stand alone you might like is Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. It's not dark at all, but instead very lighthearted and akin to The Princess Bride. I read it after slogging through some more intense series, and it was a much needed refreshing tale of adventure, love, and friendship. Also if there's any interest in reading aloud to your boys, I think they would really enjoy it! It's very family friendly.
I hope you enjoy all of the books. I like a nice small book, too. It's not about the number of books read, for me but I do love the satisfaction of getting through my huge TBR. Keep these vids coming. You two are great!
Tayler here! Hi Anna!! I love your channel too! And The History of the World According to Sheep is on my Want to Read on Goodreads. It sounds fascinating and it’s a great concept! Thank you for watching! ❤️
Hi. I'm just sitting here knitting a sock, listening to you and waiting for the Boston Pops fireworks to start. Strangely enough I only learned about Marconi last week when I was at Marconi beach at Cape Cod. It was beautiful and had plaques about his history. Im excited to hear about that Thunderstruck book. Eric Larson is a fav of mine. What I'm reading right now is The hail Mary Project by Andy Weir. Very interesting so far. Happy Fourth!
I started Ordinary Monsters last week based on your recommendation. The train scene - I can't! It was so good. A 1/3 of the way through and I'm really enjoying it.
Love Stephen King trilogy, it’s great. Holly was an easy, enjoyable read as well. And I too love Mr. Cusak and well worth the watch. One of my fav of his movies. Yep his sister is also in it.
I am typically more aligned with Brandon's reads but this month Taylor's list is resonating with me! I have been very interested in The Tainted Cup and I really loved Ernest Hemingway when I was a teen. I should reread them now, 45 yr later to see if they stand up to time.
I really enjoyed The Devil In The White City. I also have Dead Wake to read and have downloaded The Splendid and The Vile on KU. My read at the moment is X Marks The Spot, an adventurous history of archaeology.
Happy 4th to you all and your family. Although I love the Libby app, sometimes I need the feel of a book. Currently reading An Unfinished Love Story by Doris Kearns Goodwin (about politics in the ‘60s) and the new Eric Larsen book. Both so good!
I highly recommend Larson’s book, “Dead Wake.” It’s about the sinking of the Lusitania and is very good. I also read another of his books, “In The Garden of Beasts,” but I wasn’t as impressed with that. Taylor, I have ‘The Tainted Cup’ in my TBR also. I’m curious to hear how you like it. But my daughter and I are doing a buddy-read for ‘The Obelisk Gate’ by N. K. Jemisin, so you’ll finish before I start.
@@GoodBooksLately If you guys are interested in the character of Holly Gibney, you should read Stephen King's The Outsider. Her character is in that novel also. :)
I just finished Two Twisted Crowns - what a great story! I just got The Hacienda from the library and the second book of The Letters of Enchantment series called Ruthless Vows. I put Paul Murray’s book Skippy Dies on hold but maybe I should try Thriftbooks! 😊 If you like horror, have you read any Grady Hendrix? Enjoying this new podcast and my TBR is filling up!
Awesome! Have not read Grady Hendrix, but will be looking into him for sure. Thanks for the recommendation, and we are happy to hear you are enjoying the podcast! ❤️
Happy 4th! I just finished my 1st Riley Sager book called Home Before Dark. I definitely recommend it. I describe it as a spooky thriller with a lot of twists!
I just finished The Heaven and Earth Grocery store by James McBride. Amazing! Did I hear about this from you? Seems like a book Branden would like. Next up, Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone. If you end up liking the Hemingway, I really loved For Whom the Bell Tolls. And for that mid-century beautiful wit in language one of my favorite authors is Muriel Spark. I'd start with The Mandelbaum Gate. It's is so original and fascinating.
I also read Devil in the White City and was fascinated with the subject. I followed that book with The Electrifying Fall of Rainbow City by Margaret Creighton about the 1901 Worlds Fair and the assassination of President McKinley. Very similar vibe.
I found the artwork and the writing of Slewfoot to be stunning; I read it last year, and I still think about Abitha! I hope you enjoy it as much, Tayler. I just finished The Tainted Cup last week. I hope there will be more in the series, as it is listed as Shadow of the Leviathon #1 on Goodreads. I enjoyed the combination of fantasy, mystery, and a difficult detective. I'm currently reading How the Word is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith; I wish I had read this when it was released in 2021. I'm also listening to All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitacre and plan to read Sipsworth and The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet next. However, I want to get to some of the books you both recommended that I've picked up. One of those may be unseated by One Dark Window. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, especially since I'm sure you both receive many recommendations. How do you narrow down your TBR, decide what to weed out, and what to read next?
Wow! Thanks for the wonderful comment. Branden here and as far as my TBR goes, I try to be straight forward and read in order of purchase/pick-up as much as I can. It's gotten little crazy as of late but I took the time to write out a list of the books I own that I want to read and in a certain order. I'm going to try and stick to that as best as I can.
My reading has slowed down while I'm in rehearsal for "Fiddler on the Roof". When I get a chance, I'm reading Lessons in Chemistry and loving it! I also got Rebecca for later.
I finally caved and read A court of Thorns and Roses… and I gotta say, it truly is good!! I have devoured it in 3 days with 2 toddlers jumping around me…
Hi guys, I have an idea for your channel. I’d love to hear where everyone shops for books. Both online and brick& mortar. Maybe it’s a local place, where someone was on vacation etc. Tayler, you may remember early on your knitting channel, you had viewers share their favorite yarn shop. So maybe something along those lines? My favorite shop right now is a chain of thrift stores in Colorado called ARC. Prices are very reasonable plus Tuesday is senior citizen day with half off most items. Saturday is half off too for everyone ❤️👍📚😄
I just started Eager by Ben Goldfarb. It's nonfiction. I find it fascinating. Upon your recommendation, I will begin Rebecca. I am trying to decide on one classic. It may be Room with A View by E. M. Forster.
I went through a Hemingway phase. The plots move slowly and the descriptions run deep. The characters are sketched but you know them. Curious to hear what you think. ❤❤❤
I'm reading the second book in a trilogy called Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb; am in the final hour of an audiobook Red Country by Joe Abercrombie and am thinking about what to listen to next. Perhaps Taylar could do what I have heard referred to as immersive reading, where you listen to a book and read along with the actual book? I'm considering doing that with the Age of Madness trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. ❤
I'm just finishing Thunderstruck for a book club and find it fascinating. The two narrative threads are Marconi and his invention and the hunt for Dr. Crippen who murdered his wife in London. Next in line is The Demon of Unrest. Larson's books read like fiction.
@@sharonlarson5331 Thank you I have downloaded on my Kindle. I really liked The Devil In The White City . Have Dead Wake and The Splendid And The Vile to read.
So I’ve read about half of SoA and then put it down. That was about three years ago and I want to pick it back up again. It’s a good story, but once they get to Troy, it slows down a bit (but I mean, it’s like ten years in-book time so makes sense 😅) so I think I just wasn’t in the headspace for it. If you liked Circe, chances are you’ll like this. However, it’s a huge cast of characters and much more political and militarily focused. This is Tayler, btw. ☺️
@GoodBooksLately ooh okay thank you! This would be my first Madeline Miller, so I'm unsure if I can do it. 😅 It sounds really interesting and I might like the political themes of it. Will keep your notes in mind for sure! Hoping to read for a local book club in August 😊
I’m currently reading “ six of crows “ by Leigh Badugo. While you were discussing the horror or horror adjacent book I had to think of “ the September House”by carissa Orlando. I read it last fall and found it very intriguing but also intense.
I really enjoyed The Tainted Cup. It did take me a moment to get used to the world, but once I did, it was great! Also, I do not believe it is a standalone. I think it has a sequel coming in 2025, which I am excited about!
IMHO, if you find you don't like Old Man and the Sea (I hated it, sorry!), give another book a shot (A Farewell to Arms, for example, has more of a "story"), and if you didn't like Cannery Row, give another book a shot. I found those two short works not super indicative of the quality of their longer books. Maybe that's just me. 🤪
