💲 NEED FINANCIAL ADVICE? 💲
1) Google "fee-only financial adviser" or visit www.NAPFA.org (largest association of fee-only financial advisers). NOT an affiliate link
2) The first question to ask any financial adviser is, "Are you a fiduciary to me 100% of the time". Get the answer in writing
3) Please note that some people call themselves "fee-based". This is NOT the same as fee-only. Fee-only advisers have committed to being fiduciary to you 100% of the time.
4) Personally, I would only hire an adviser who is a fiduciary to me 100% of the time. This is not a suggestion on what you should do. Just sharing my personal preference.
⚠️ Azul's "Scammer" Warning ➡ PLEASE READ! ⚠️
Be careful of scammers. In the comments section, I will NEVER ask you to contact me, offer any investment products, recommend a stock broker, or anything similar. Some scam bot commenters 'ask' for investment help, and later, other comment bots reply with "how great X idea/investment/person is" in the replies. These are scam threads. Do not fall for them.
🚨 Azul's VIDEOS ARE NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE (Disclaimer) 🚨
This information is only provided as an informational resource and should not be viewed as investment advice or recommendations. To get professional financial advice from a fee-only financial advisor near you, please visit www.napfa.org.
The decisions on how to invest, when to retire, and other financial planning topics are some of the most important financial decisions you will make in your life. I urge you to seek professional financial advice as you make this decision. Ideally, from a financial adviser, AND a CPA AND an attorney. Having the perspective of all three professions will help you make the right decision for you and your family.
This information is being presented without consideration of the investment objectives, risk tolerance, or financial circumstances of any specific investor and may NOT be suitable for all investors.
This information is NOT intended to, and should NOT, form a primary basis for any investment decision that you may make. Always consult your own legal, tax, and/or investment advisor before making any investment/tax/estate/financial planning considerations or decisions.
Spoiler Alert: There are no "get rich" programs. Rather, just basic blocking & tackling and putting in time and care. Do your homework, choose wisely and (IMHO) work with experienced professionals who are fiduciary to you 100% of the time.

From a financial perspective, would you invest in something that has a 50% chance of success? Probably not. So why do it with your personal life? Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce and of the remaining 50% it is likely a chunk of those aren’t so blissful…

That is true. I'm more free now than I've ever been. My last relationship ended six years ago. My daughter is now grown. Both of my cats have died. I accepted a job that has me living in an AirBNB. I don't have a home, and I put all my stuff in storage to take this job. So I don't even have rent or a house payment. I've never been this free. It's a little overwhelming because I don't know what to do with all this freedom, and I'm scared of wasting the opportunity. I can go anywhere I want once this job is over later this year, but I have no idea where I want to go.

If older single people are worried about failing health, single people can always get a geriatric care manager. I will get a geriatric care manager and lifelock....problem solved. I figure because of not having kids and doing okay with managing my money, I will be able to afford a geriatric care manager who would basically being advocating on my behalf should I ever become incapacitated.

I retired and moved to a small rural town. I live out in the country and only have a few neighbors. I deliberately chose a place without a lot neighbors nearby. I like not having to interact with a lot of people /get involved in all the drama. I am debt and mortgage free. My needs are few and I engage in activities that cost very little to do. I live a comfortable life style and don't need a high income.

Your situation sounds similar to mine. I was married young, divorced young and never remarried. I retired five years ago. I have mostly been a loner and not comfortable around large groups, never had more than a handful of close friends. I love to work with my hands and stay busy with that and my two dogs. When I was still working, I could t bear all the meaningless chit chat and welcomed the serenity of living on my own in a small mountain village. I do worry about not having a support group close at hand but I chose this life so it’s my bad! Like you, no mortgage and am debt free so I don’t really have anxiety over money issues. The only time I think about my life if married is when I can’t move something heavy or need a second pair of hands! ☺️☺️. Not everyone was born to marry. We do have meaningful, enriched lives as single ppl but just as married folks have their issues, single ppl do as well. I have never regretted my life choices, wouldn’t change a thing. Thank you for reminding us of these challenges, the legal ones must be addressed.

People grappling with the difficulty of meeting essential expenses often encounter this situation due to inadequate savings during their working years. The decisions taken in readiness for retirement carry extensive consequences, as demonstrated within my own family dynamics. Differing investment approaches yielded disparate results. Guided by a financial advisor, I'm currently retired.
@BiancaSherly-qt6sb

Indeed, that's accurate. I'm currently in my mid-50s. My wife and I were on a similar path until a couple of years ago when I decided to shift my investments to her wealth manager. While I haven't quite caught up to her accumulated profits over the years, I'm at least earning more now. I'm generating income even before retirement, and my retirement fund has experienced remarkable growth compared to what it would have with just the 401(k). It's quite amusing.

I've remained in touch with a financial analyst since the start of my business. Amid today's dynamic market, the key difficulty is pinpointing the right time to buy or sell when dealing with trending stocks - a seemingly simple task but challenging in reality. I'm single (always have been), been retired for 4 years now, I love living by myself but do have friends in my hobby "tribe". I'm not sure what constitutes "financial anxiety", I do pay close attention to my finances and live simply to make sure my money lasts. The 3rd point doesn't apply to me since I've never been married. I will admit #4 could be a problem, just for having the physical assistance when you are sick, however even if you are married you might eventually end up in that situation anyway (spouse dies first). I retired single and honestly would not have it any other way, but I'm a bit weird.

Excellent guidance Azul! I have been a 67 year old, single female for the past ten years and it has its pros and cons. I retired this December when I turned 67, as I finally realized the cost of time was higher than any job could provide. I feel that I am on a new journey: a book yet to be written and for me to decide what will its pages say. I want to make every decision moving forward intentional, meaninful, confidently, and embrace what life brings. I heard the saying "Live your best life" which made me contemplate its meaning and what brings me joy, peace, and happiness. In some cases a single person can save significantly more than a married couple. My husband always spent more, on nonsense, than he brought home. He couldn't save a dollar, long term, if his life had depended on it. Hours of arguments, budgets and even spreadsheets went nowhere. All savings I made for retirement had to be done from my paycheck and pre-take home. I'm so glad I did that. He passed away and didn't need any retirement. I'm still around and very much need it. I could have saved so much more without him.

I agree! I am 68 and retired for 3 years. My ex was often unemployed and shopping was his favourite and only hobby. He wanted alimony when I divorced him! He split everything 50/50 as that is the law in Canada. After his debts (our debts, in the eyes of the law) I bought him out of our house and he left with a pile of cash. Needless to say, he spent it quickly and lost everything. I am so glad I divorced him 20 years ago or I would be living in that basement apartment with him. I am happy and am solid financially. I don’t want a room mate but do have a partner that lives in his own place. Best of both worlds.

Another huge aspect in relation to retirement that is often overlooked in these types of discussions is family. Never mind being single. The American healthcare system in particular almost EXPECTS everyone to have close available family members at their beck-and-call for assistance. Do you need to be sedated for an in-office procedure? Call your family. Need a prescription picked up because you can’t drive. Call a family member. Need a first floor bedroom to stay in for recuperation? Call your family! Unfortunately, not only are many of us SINGLE, but many of us also no longer have family. My point being that for those of us who dare to deviate from societal norms are bound to be punished for it. Happy retirement.

First Challenges was the 14th largest bank in the US, and it wasn't subject to the most strict controls. How many banks actually are subject to those controls, besides the big four? Any bank could suffer a run and fail, and if that happens to a community level or even state level bank it probably won't upset the national economy or ecosystem of banks, but any multi-state bank should be more closely watched, I cannot let my $680k savings vanish after putting in so much effort to accumulate them.

During market downturns, investors should remain committed to reputable companies by maintaining or growing their investments, as well-managed businesses eventually regain their former strength. To find the best entry and exit points for long-term gains from stock appreciation, get advice from a financial expert. Gains from working with an investing advisor can be substantial, as was demonstrated during the pandemic when a gain of $530k in just 8 months was realized.

The Apple Watch functions quite well as an emergency notification device, and is quite cost effective for the purpose (and has other useful functions too). I have gifted several to senior citizens I am close to and they have each been quite happy with them, and a couple of them have benefited from the fall detection feature. It’s literally life saving. Respectfully submitted.

I work for an attorney. On Saturday, a client alerted us that her mom, it was just discovered, has stage 4 cancer. We got the pertinent information on Monday, finished up edits on Tuesday, and made an appointment on Friday to sign them at her home. It was financial power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney, beneficiary deed (real estate), beneficiary assignment (tangible property such as household goods), and a will. Now everyone is at peace because none of it will need to go through probate (in all likelihood). ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: power of attorney is ONLY effective while the person is alive. Once the person is deceased, whomever they named as their personal representative is the one who executes their wishes as outlined in the will, etc.

It's not isolation, it's solitude. Alone doesn't mean lonely. I plan to retire early, in the next 2-3 years, once my youngest is in college, and set. One of my top priorities for retirement is a bluewater sailboat that I can singlehand: i.e., a sailboat I can safely and easily sail alone, and is designed with ocean-crossing capability - a combination that is available, but uncommon. I plan to spend part of each year in retirement sailing coastal south Florida / keys, the Bahamas and the Caribbean: alone. Still looking for the right boat at the right price and condition, in the right location (if it's on the other side of the world, you have to get it here or pay someone to do if for you). I'm ready to buy now; I'd like to get the boat as soon as possible so I can get it ready, repaired, updated and refit, and enjoy it now while still working. Other than my kids, I have zero interest in socializing with anyone.

Agree with your point of loneliness, however, even in countries like India people are following western culture of divorce and roaming with multiple people, abuse, narcissism, lack of financial wisdom and extreme ego and rude behaviour. Frankly speaking I have suffered a lot and barely escaped toxic relationships, just even asking for a calm family life is big NO NO by Indian ladies, people especially ladies in India now a days are all rushing for career, money, publicity and men like me who still holds some traditional values have no where to go. I know it's not good to isolate, however, I do believe that is far better to remain sane and not to allow other people take advantage/use & throw me. Just like you, I do travel and go to nature when the inner turmoil and past traumas make me unstable. I have my mom only and my retirement plan has only 1 person in consideration - me.

All my kids moved away and my close relatives passed away including my younger sister. I’m at a point in which social life is not a priority and I had been happily divorced for a long time. There is nothing that can bring me more joy than living close to the ones I love. Being the person that lived the longest in my family , and with financial stability, I plan on relocating across the country looking for a simple peaceful retirement even if it is not to the most tax advantage state.

Retiring in 977 days. Yes, I have a count down clock in my computer. I've been single all my life. I have one grown son. I'm good living alone. Financial advisor has my portfolio in great shape for me to maintain my lifestyle. There is no need for being around people when I don't want. I pick self check out to avoid cashiers, too. I prefer animals. At least they're trustworthy, unlike most humans.

Lots of good stuff with being single. But everyone should try being married at least once. One and done with me. I retired at 52 and never looked back. That was 7 years ago. Happy to say the ex still working. Life is good.

Why should everyone try being married At least once,? what if we don’t want to? And divorce is usually very expensive. There are other things in life and not everybody finds their soulmate. They only find their perfect soulmate in a Hallmark movie. Ha ha

@@enjoystraveling Sarcasm. Everyone should experience that misery of marrying one person and divorcing someone TOTALLY different.

What a weird thing to say that “everyone should try it at least once.” It’s not like going to a concert 🙄.

When you have a wife thats sleeping with her doctors, never home, lieing, complaining.......... you will be happy to be alone. My pets have never petitioned the court system to take the house and land using a quick claim deed.

Being a single older woman I have been a mark here in Florida for unethical people, from car salesmen to home repairs (actually, destruction, as repairs were worse than the original problem in some instances).

I feel sorry for single women in the US. Even if they are well off it must be tough. Even if married and the man does not know how to screw in a lightbulb it is a very daunting task to keep your head above water. Homes in my neighborhood are all married folks that fall into the cannot screw a light bulb in. And, it keeps them broke and pretty sad IMHO. My problem is trying to keep my home in good shape and not standing out. Also now my neighbors know I am in pretty good shape because I travel so much and leave the house vacant. Kinda of a balancing act for me. I try to keep a very low profile and keep to myself here in the US. When I leave I let the good time roll... hahaha The last bull run has me in better shape that I have ever been in. So takin profits and keeping it quiet is a goal at this point. Odd how just a few months ago I was buying all I could digest in beaten down stocks. And was feeling kinda broke and alone. Now, my gosh. I am waiting for the next recession... hahaha. Now I am stuffing the cash in T-bills short term.

@@garykinard7553 Me, too. I actually love bear markets, no shopping on green days. I'm planning to move to Mexico. Despise Florida with my whole heart and soul. Will live in my van before I grow feeble here.

Wait! I’m semi-retired, still working part-time by choice, but isolation suits me just fine. I’ve always been single, am a real introvert, am content to be alone. I have only a little anxiety over finances. I’ve always lived at or below my means. No, I’m not interested in wearing a pendant on my neck. I keep my phone on me. As for someone to call, right now, I really don’t have anyone to call me every day. Once a week I chat with a friend my age who lives half way across the country. I have my will and healthcare stipulations with a lawyer, but have authorized my pastor to make health decisions for me. I want someone who shares the same moral and spiritual beliefs, not just an attorney.

The challenge that single people will face is taxes. The cost of housing is approximately the same regardless of how many live in the house, but the single will be paying twice the income tax of a couple....thus reducing income available for housing or anything else. And many of us don't want a room mate. That also means that we are far more than double likely to go above the minimum medicare costs, have a higher percentage of our Social Security taxed, etc.
