best thing for research parts is doing the travelling merchants quest she asks you to find and catch rare fish types theres like 6 in total 2 or 3 of them are behind walls that require whaler explosives but the others aren't and each fish yields 2 research parts from the merchant.

At the traveling merchant or (the woman in each major island) you can buy metal and a research part in the last tab of the shipyard, it only shows up roughly once a week or so, but closing and reopening helps speed things up. Another way to speed things up is to just sleep through the nights and check each morning but it’s slightly slower
