I appreciate all of these videos. I just won my first casino tournament last weekend! Not a massive win but definitely big for me. I mixed up my play with a wide variance but wasn't trapping myself with just top pair. I love going to these videos especially when I'm in a rut. Thanks for all you do!
A common mistake I see in my buddies is that they think there is some kind of pattern or universal correct play. They think a positive outcome is going to occur every time. They won a big hand with 5-6 suited or bluffed with a certain bet pattern and won... so they expect it to happen every time. I was guilty of this too. I always played a 7-8 or 6-7 because I thought they were most likely to make a straight, because several times they did 😂, and I put too much confidence in those hands and paid to see a flop far too often.
number two will be the hardest to get over, for me. i feel its a big part of my game when i show the bluff or the nuts, all in plan for future play in the same tourney or cash game, i must definitely learn to show a bit less going forward. HOWEVER. number one really hits hard, grasping that, i guess a lot of us play for the love of the game, but the money is the main upside to poker... i wouldnt be into poker as much if i have a slight doubt that i cannot make it. budget/bankroll is a big deal for me, im just grinding small tourneys and cash games for now while i only have online poker. working hard to get into live games again, which are few and far between in my country..
Pricing them in to call is also strategy , like who wants to win a 100 dollar pot when you can win a 300 dollar pot with queens ? its risky but somepots are meant to be built up as well

Poker is not steady income. It's difficult to make it as a pro. I was talking with a few pros before the pandemic and they were talking about their overall profit for the year and I had made just as much as they had as a rec player while putting in much less time. It's better to just enjoy it for what it is and not have to rely on the up and down nature of the game. The conversation gave me a much better understanding and let me know I would never want to go that route unless I was rich to the point where the money didn't matter.
@@bernan1 those break even months feel like killers every time. I had a span of 8 months at break even once, and when it finally passed I won $10k in 3 sessions before dropping back to my average.

First of all, even if we only look at equity, a straight draw has about 32% vs QQ and a flush draw has about 36% (or 32% since you have Qd blocker+backdoor Qhigh flush +bd fh) while they need 30% equity to make the immediate call (straight up pot odds) with your suggested $75 bet. But that's not your main mistake. Assuming you have a decent stack behind, no open ended or flush draw should ever fold. Why? There are things like implied odds and fold equity. On average you will pay a positive amount when they hit. If you always fold to any diamond,3,8,A,K then you will fold to any bluff, and most cards in the deck will make you fold to a bet. In short, They need 30% EV NOT EQUITY. For example, any 6 can call, and even if straight draw bricks but there's a diamond, he can bluff you off your hand or put you in a nasty situation. Any diamond,8,3,A,K on the turn or river and you are either "outdrawn" or bluffed off. And finally, QQ is NOT a mandatory value bet, since board smashes callers range. In fact it is mostly checked. Do you really want to get your money in with this holding? See your own advice (#5) :D IMHO a very misleading example and explanation.
It’s good the end of this video, never bet 100% of your life on this, work hard, produce hard, have good and extras for your family , than have your little stack for these kind of gambling “fun””professional” what ever you want to feel like and play it… some time cards will be with you sometime not, that’s poker. These comments are dillusional. It is not easy or very doable to be a successful pro. He did not say it's not possible, he is giving cold hard statistics against making life-changing money. It is very, very difficult. People on here are typical poker players, riding their ego and dreaming they can win the wsop main event. Nope. Gotta be first brilliant, then highly skilled and knowledgeable, be good at reading people, be good at not giving tells, have a lot of heart, and be a coldblooded killer at the table, no less. This is why it is so difficult, almost impossible to have all these qualities and on top of that, be able to check your ego and walk away when losing

Making it as a pro poker player is the same rate as becoming a professional athlete, musician, etc. Throw in the element of luck that comes with playing cards, and the odds are even more against you. Just enjoy it.
Disagree you can learn to be a profitable player over the long term. It is a game of skill therefore anyone that wants to learn it can. Most people I think win for a little bit go on a down swing and start chasing. Learning to handle variance is the key. learning to play profitable poker is easy if you can invest enough of your time.
You don't need to be Phil Ivey to make it playing poker just like you don't need to be Taylor Swift to make a living as a musician. There are thousands upon thousands of professional musicians, playing gigs, teaching, grinding and perfecting a craft they enjoy. Not always glamorous, often hungry, but certainly possible. Poker players just need to beat players at their level and live within their means and bankroll. That could mean anything from high roller or minimum wage...
I think what tim says is the exact same thing in the video... Of course you could get some money from playing poker cash games or local tournaments, but the cases where some becomes a millionare professional poker player are counted with the palm of a hand. There are soccer players living ok with a second division salary, but the odds of making it to the big leagues are slim. Just like college basketball or football, not everyone goes d1 or overseas... Like all of those professional athleats, you can make it with A LOT!!! of discipline, hard work and A LOT of good luck
Been at it since 1977 and when players show their cards when they don’t have to it is 9 out of 10 times a sucker. The other 1 out of 10 is a good player with a reason.
Re Number 2 about not showing your cards, depending on the game, I sometimes show my cards when I have the stone-cold nuts. This reinforces a table image that most players--if they're paying any attention--already have of me as a tight-aggressive player. I am not likely to get marginal calls from those who know my style, so why not reinforce the image with a little advertising to be followed by some bulling and thieving? The reinforcement makes it more likely that my bluffs will succeed. " Lord, it's him again! He alway has it!" Or do I? Sometimes, you can overcome your ferocious table image by introducing a little doubt. I was in an Omaha/8 game this morning and turned an ace-high straight with a nut redraw to clubs (and a royal). The river was a brick. I bet out, and my opponent remarks that I probably have the ace-ten. I reply, "Or I could have the nine-ten like you, and am simply trying to bluff you off your half of the pot." The introduction of even just a scintilla of doubt (no matter how obviously fictional) was enough to elicit the call. As for not getting rich playing poker, how about the feeling of utility you get from simply being a winning player? How about the ability to supplement your income? How about having something to fall back on if things get tough? How about applying to other areas of your life the calmness, logic and unflappability you found within yourself to become a winning player?

Are you really going to be in the right frame of mind in that situation? You need to be free of 'needing' money to make continuous good decisions on a table.

Great video. #5 came at a good time for me. I was playing 2/3 two nights ago and was card dead. So I called a raise from EP with JKo in the cutoff. My eyes lit up when Flop comes J34 rainbow. Then tilted LAG donk jams from UTG. I debated and folded. He showed J10. I was mad at myself in the moment, but one of my general rules is don’t go broke with one pair.
Thanks so much for these videos, BlackRain. Poker is a beautiful and chaotic game. The biggest problem I see with being a professional poker player is you can't forecast your income. I'm a creative freelance professional and circa 2023 I'd much rather have a steady gig for a figurative $6 a month, than a ghost income of $9. Freelancing 1099 with no support where you can work 12-hour days and end up billing 7.5 while juggling client calendars is tough enough. I can't imagine living week-to-week not knowing what my income is unless I was already wealthy. Forget gold, how much is an ounce of adrenaline worth on a weekly basis?
Another tip: if you call a river bet, let the last aggressor show their cards. You don’t show until they show. If they don’t want to show, wait until they muck their hand. You paid to see their cards, let them show. Only time I show my hand uncontested is in high hand scenarios where I have to show to get paid on some casino jackpot.
I know it's not the same thing but regarding point 2) I was in a big hand once on final table, I had pocket nines and there's two all ins before me, the first guy shows AK not realising I was still in - and the other guy holds up his cards to show the first player and smiles - so I knew they both had each other's outs! I make the easy call with my nines and take both of them out!
I make the ace rag mistake too, was literally playing a tournament while watching that part, had an ace rag, opportunity to steal the big blind and it worked hahaha! Will be much more careful in bigger spots from now on!
#1: My only ever cash in a live tournament (6th place in a 300 person $1000+$60 tournament in 2008) was won by a 21 year old David Peters, one of the top grossing tournament players of all time. Got him good after going all-in after he raised my donk bet on the flop, so at least I can say I beat the best in 1 hand!
This guy is so vague and conflictive. Who worries about opponent having pocket J's when you are holding KJ and a J comes on a flop? If I ever sit down with Teddy KGB, I will check, check, check when I flop a nut straight.
In a small game of 50 dollar pots on average, because of the casino take ever hand. If you played even win vs loss pots. Every person hitting 50% would be broke within a few hours.

Depends on the table. If it's a table of calling stations, shifty moves don't always help as you're going to get called. Seen too many try and bluff, wasting money and blowing chips on what are some of the most consistent profitable tables.
Pretty good information the showing of the hands has been and will be continuing to be done by top cheer professional poker players with some frequency until the end of time. It’s a personal choice. Yeah you’re giving away information but sometimes you want to plant the seeds for switching gears later on, and the information that you gave can be used against your opponents. It’s called strategy.
you could also just pot bet it if it's easier. Both are close to giving 2-1 that it doesn't really matter. Also easier to disguise rather than sitting there doing math while the opponent is waiting.
why not just keep your range wide? If you're range is wide enough, there's little reason to show as they'll know it could be a variety. One thing that's nice about not showing is when you've bought a few pots without showing, and then have to show and you have crap. Now..they start wondering how many pots you just bought were legit. If they were in those pots, now they'll more likely want ot get their money back a titch more
Always force your opponent to make the decision. Most pre flop hands suck. Of course, you"ll most of time steal the antes...And in tournaments you get ground down waiting for great flops...
Nathan.....your video just blew my mind. The very same scenario you just described in the beginning of your video happened to me two nights ago and I am still tilting. After studying at least 5 hours of your videos, I went to play $1/2 with a $300 buyin at a local TX card house . I played solid poker following your strategies and after 3 1/2 hours, I turned my $300 buyin into $1200 . I was so stoked to be a winner because $900 profit is a lot of money for me and I am a newbie playing live cash games. Everything was great until I was dealt AKo . I 3-bet the initial raiser's $20 making it $80. Everyone folds to the HJ who has AJs and he 4- bets to $300. I call and flop comes K, J, T, (no flushes) flopping KK and giving villain JJ with a gut shot. I go all in for my remaining $900 and guy calls. A brick comes on the turn and a Jack flops on river giving him a set. I was stacked for $1200. That was the biggest pot I ever played which I lost and I am still a bit tad traumatized. Instead of going home up over $2000 I left a loser down $300. I need to focus on the 3 hours of solid poker and being able to turn $300 into $1200 even though I lost it all in a single hand. I know I am capable of doing it again. My goal playing poker has always been an extra $2000 a month which is life changing money for me. So almost winning that in a single night is mind blowing. I think what happened is called is called variance which is why I need to play again soon. Going to watch another 5 hours of videos before I play again which will improve my game even more. Thanks again for the great content. My goal is to soon purchase your course. I wish I had the funds to do it now. I could only imagine how much I would improve. You rock brotherman.🤟
