Always be looking for a bailout spot stopped or other wise. Started riding at 13 and still riding at 62 I've used the bailout 3 times 2 of the 3 would have killed me had I not had that mindset and my head always on a 360 degree swivel. You new rider's need to take that to heart. I've had a lot of friends that I use to ride with that are no longer riding with me because of alcohol, drugs or having the wrong mindset when they got on their bikes. Not preaching to any of you so don't think I am but remember one more thing. Don't ever think that you have mastered that bike the day you do it will turn on you. When I'm engine braking, I always slightly apply my rear brake to help control the deceleration and signal that I'm slowing down. It also makes me feel much more experienced than I am.
@FastFXS
@FastFXS Год назад
You need to be using your front brake, Not, your rear brake, 75% of your stopping power is in front, .but, the main reason is you have much more control using the front. Think of it the same way as you would with a blowout. Front blows, you have much more control because the bars are in your hand and you can control the direction of bike more readily. Rear your at the mercy of the bike, rd etc. I personally preferred have control. Also keep in mind, your finger is much closer to the brake than your foot.

Fear is a really good and respected teacher. 👌 complacency kills. I respect every bike I get on. Every time I throw my leg over and start up, I accept that there's a chance I won't come back from that ride so every time I pull into my driveway or where ever I'm headed, its a relief and its satisfying. I never took any further training although I wish I had but after 15 years, I'm pretty aware of what I'm doing lol... not being cocky at all. I'm well aware I could just as easily make a mistake as anyone else on the road. I know guys who have been riding 20, 30 years and still make newbie mistakes, occasionally, but it happens.

'White-lining' is (or was in the 70s) legal in California. But it was mostly a legal loophole. First, most bikes are air cooled and CA freeways are justifiably infamous for their stand-still traffic. Second, bikes were legally permitted to share a lane with another bike - but since the law actually read "another vehicle' bikes could legally share a lane with a car; making 'white-lining' legal. (NOTE: this also meant that technically a 'white-liner was not suppose 'ride' the white-line. They were suppose to stay in one lane or the other, and if they changed lanes all requisite signaling was required. So, no white-line' weaving.) Put these two facts together and 'white-lining' was virtually a common way of life for bikers on LA freeways. (This type of "White-lining" ,aka Lane-splitting or Lane-sharing, is generally not legal outside of CA.) I tried it once in LA. But never again, and for good reasons. First, LOTS of CA drivers resent 'white-liners' and not a few will take aggressive actions against them. Second, I rode a dressed out tour bike - bigger bike, smaller mid-lane clearances. On top of that, I rode a Goldwing which is water cooled, so I didn't really have a NEED to take the added risk (or risk the threats) of 'white-lining'

Two fingers down is actually originally a signal to let each other know all is well behind them as well as to say hello. E.G. tapping the top of your helmet being a sign of warning (heads up) to an on coming rider that their is a danger they are headed for. Remembering and practicing this was a priority when I was growing up on bikes.

The whole engine braking thing..... If people still drove standard cars they would understand this anyways 😅. Shoot when not on two wheels I drive a van that has a decent amount of engine braking and I don't use the brake pedal until I need to

Lol been riding from 14 years old now 70 life behind bars. Using the engine breaking is the best and fastest way in an emergency had a buddy riding in lead hated him up front cause if he seen a Tim’s no signal no slowing down it was like an emergency stop every time he did it. Never hit him once. Come to think of it I should have planted him. Well in a way I cant say never hit him once I did once maybe a few more but in the same fight. Notice I said HAD a buddy? Ride safe Brother 😎👊

Fun fact...The signal to alert others of a police car...was originally not a "tap" on the top of the head, but a fist placed thumb-side down on top..to imitate the old "bubble gum" single rotating light on top (that was replaced by the light bar)...yea, been riding a while.. :) Cheers

I drive a Jeep, so the waving very much a part of our culture, as well. Even though I don't ride, I usually try to give motorcycles a wider lane by pulling to the side in rush hour traffic to make it easier for them to split the lane. To all the riders that have given the wave to acknowledge the space I've made, you're welcome, and thanks for the friendly gesture!

The downward pointing gesture confused me a lot, my first week on the bike. My instinct is to wave gently, like I do in the car. Everyone waves at eachother in their cars here; like, a greeting, not just to direct traffic or get attention. Anyways I figured it was, "two-down".

#3 Yes, bikes have a greater power to weight ratio and leave a stop sign/signal light quicker. But a large amount of bike/auto accidents happen at intersections. And that is why I leave the intersection quickly.

I ride a 100cc 2 stroke on a bicycle. Its equipped with lights and signals and all. More than one biker has used the blinker hand gesture when I have left mine blinking. Most of them chuckle and smile when they see me too. Also they do not seem to care that I am riding what amounts to a bicycle with a lawnmower engine on it.

In the UK, because we drive on the left we nod our heads in acknowlegment of other riders, because if we waved we would have to take our hands of the throttle. The leg move is also used to thank motorists who pull over to let you pass, while slow filtering, as you need both hands on the throttle and close to the front brake.
