It's a landlocked country, you end up getting used to the mountains, the weather can be drab, the lake shores are often private. I lived there for a while, now happy to be near the sea again.

Well in theory france is western europe and switzerland and germany are middle europe. So with nothern europe you mean scandinavia ? Why is australia so ancient ?^^(just so I know, nothing comes to mind when I hear australia and ancient tbh...) To call (northern)europe uninteresting which influenced most of recent world history in almost every aspect is kind of weird, landscapewise you get from desert, mediterianen to glaciers to northpole pretty much all in it with all its biodiversity. Europe got culturewise probably more diversity in its little toe then north america has as a whole. What I want to say, maybe europe is not the best for you but to call it "uninteresting" is soooo weird in soooo many aspects and I almost can't believe that you really mean it. But everyone has it's own taste I guess^^
