Note for my self and maybe can be a help for you guy 😊 1. Eat lot of antioxidant rich food (salmon, nut, berries, kale, etc) 2. Sunscreen 3 retinol 4. peptide matrixyl, copper peptide 5. Antioxidant skincare (vit c, vit e, niacinamide, coenzyme q10) 6. Red light therapy 7. Lifestyle (workout, sleep, less drink, less smoke).
I got diagnosed with IBD this month and it has forced me to cut off all sugar, processed carbs, and gluten. I have been eating a lot of salmon, berries, kale, avocado, macadamia nuts, sweet potatoes, etc. Already I have seen a difference in my skin even though that was never the goal. Diet is SUPER important.
I'm in the same boat. I was eating terrible before gut issues. Lots of sugar and carbs. i noticed myself looking really haggard around 31 or 32. I developed gut issues and went on an elimination diet of mostly animal foods and a few select low irritation plants. A few months later i noticed the difference in my skin. The wrinkles i was getting softened and i started getting carded again on the rare occasions i buy wine lol. I'm 38 now, no wrinkles, and still get people telling me they thought for sure i was underage
I feel sad about people in their 40s talking about being comfortable with aging. They have no idea what's coming once they hit their 60s. Enjoy your youth while you still have it. Btw - I look good for my age and have been told I look ten years younger. I’ve been on HRT since I entered postmenopause 10 years ago. I do a lot of yoga, eat well, have a job I love, a wonderful family and friends. But it gets harder and harder as your body continues to break down. It’s a fact. So, as I said, enjoy your youth.
Don't make me afraid. Ageing is a blessing that is not granted to every one. What can we do to still be happy n healthy n fit with advancing age ? Any advice ?
that's what I tell my son and his wife stay youthful while you can take care of your skin now, because you don't want to look like I do, and I'm 58 almost 60, but I like aging is something you can't stop, so you might as well like it

so I one of my friends is a leading enviornmental toxicologists in the US. She helped author textbooks for OSHA, NIOSH...etc. She practices holistic integrative health and she gave me a really great piece of advice. I was having severe skin problems. She told me to start taking/eating sun chokes on a regular basis. Apparently the probiotic in the sunchoke or jerusalem artichoke as it's often called is a skin super booster. She told me the body is born with this probiotic as a baby and it's responsible for that baby soft dewy skin but by the time we are 6 months old it disappears. I've been incorporating the sunchoke in my diet for about a year now and it not only cleared up my skin issue, it was probably responsible for turning the clock back age wise in appearance about 15 years. All of my skin looks and feels thick and healthy from head to toe. Just putting it out there in case someone else wants to try it. God makes amazing stuff!
Please don’t forget ladies in their 60’s. I’ve taken good care of my skin over the years, but would love any advice you may have to offer. I just found you today and I’m so grateful for your honesty! Keep it up. ❤
My dad is 57 and has never used SPF and drinks and doesn't care too much for healthy food and let me tell you..... His health is in top shape, no bones hurt, he has more stamina than a 30 year old. The other day I saw a picture of him next to a 38 year old and he looked younger.... My mom has been asked if he has a pact with the devil 😂 I think it's his good genes and that he has always exercised. He has always been active person. Taking us hikes, running etc. I just hope I have this side of his good genes.
I know. I laugh that my dad, as an Urologist used to have to perform 3x as many transplants for patients than his colleagues who were P O d at him with such snarky remarks such as are you buying yourself a golden coffin?? Heck. I know my dad enough to know he would never do anything that he didn't like doing. The only washing he did too much of was scrubbing before surgery. He was a really laid back guy who shows up not late but down to the wire to do life saving surgeries. It must have been really rewarding. He was out in the sun a lot when he was a kid, but also read a lot, er obviously. at 85, he looked barely 50. People would think he was a lot younger. He stayed out of the sun, but only because he became allergic to sunlight from all that scrubbing or whatever. I honestly think he was an alien. I mean he did not have any permanent wrinkles. OK This isn't fair. I only got half his genes and he didn't get much sleep either. He also ate on the run. I am surprised he lived till 86. He thought he might hit 90 at most. However, it was a stroke TIA that took him while he was browsing the ginger in the vegetable aisle at a grocery store, and he was gone in 4 days. I never got to say good bye to him. I feel like this is not the end. He was too chill to see me cry. I didn't. I knew he had been rewarded for his dedication. It was something he loved to do as well. How lucky was he? . My mom was in the washroom and didn't think it would be that fast she missed the end. My brothers said he just smiled and closed his eyes, looking all of 50 they were there and I wasn't able to be there as well. I wish he had spent more time with us. He was one dedicated doctor. I was mad because he shortened some of our vacations because he had to go back to do one day of consultation. I know he's still around. That's how I feel, OK dad? He seems to have sneaked away from my mom. 😂.
Yip my Dad eats meat and 2 veg diet and chocolate and sometimes has a drink. He plays under 70’s football and walks everywhere. He is healthy as ever and is not on any medication. His doctor doesn’t even know who he is, I don’t think my Dad has ever visited a doctor so….
Having a menstrual cycle for decades wasn't a joyride for me. Menopause often is portrayed as doom and gloom. I am learning to embrace aging. I feel more confident in my 40s, aware and take better care of myself. With age, comes wisdom. I can't control the future, but I can make smarter choices each day that will support my mind and body. I personally add Vital marine collagen to my protein shakes, and it works for me, in addition I add maca, moringa, mushroom master blend, l-lysine, vitamin c and d3/k2 and feel balanced. I would love to see more emphasis on the positive side of aging. Maybe I sound impractical, but I prefer to be optimistic.
40 is not old 😂You’re only 40 that’s why you can fantasize about ageing. Wait another 10 yrs and try again😂. Ageing is not fun, not making you any wiser, you decline so fast that you don’t want to take pictures anymore .Mental decline is the worst … focus, sharpness all gone . Instead of” embracing” it, (that sounds cute but not realistic) better prepare yourself, be one step ahead of it , read and educate yourself how to manage the decline bc it’s coming and it’s not something to embrace .👍
I have been reading books, watching videos, and listening to podcasts about skincare for yeaaars now because of my acne problems. I am SO happy I just found this page. Your explanations are so clear ! Thank youuuuuuu❤
I had to find this on my own but people, if you take supplements for collagen (like powdered peptides) DON'T forget to take lysine supplements too. It's crucial in helping build collagen.
Damn, this video is the best you’ve ever done and every single previous videos are already so good. But this vid is next level deep, thorough , comprehensive and challenge viewers to rethink about how they can approach aging in a more holistic way instead of just focusing on skincare. 👏👏👏
Wow. Really, if you were my biology teacher back in high school, I would have never missed your class. Precise, research based info with all that sass. ❤
I notice a massive difference in my skin when I eat chicken soup regularly. I think the collagen-boosting factor is present in the part of the soup that seems to be thicker, glossy, and even a bit slimy. So you don't want to skim the soup too much. Also, eating chicken or fish skin. These are huge collagen boosters, in my personal experience!!!
I see a huge difference on the smoothness and hydration of my skin when I take collagen supplements and there's no placebo when it comes to my dry heels and lips.
Darling, Dr, I LOVE YOUR CONTENT!!! And… I can vouch for the collagen-ingestion theory: I had terrible cellulite. Like terrrrible. A month ago I started taking a scoop and a half a day of collagen peptides powder and the cellulite is almost all gone in 4 short weeks!!! Come to think that I was wasting my money on all these expensive cosmetic treatments. Now I know why no cosmetician ever told me to supplement with collagen powder to solve my cellulite issue because they would be out of business. Food IS medicine. Much love, CM
I was really happy to learn about copper peptides. I saw a clip recently of a dietician who explained that zinc supplements can deplete copper. That immediately rang a bell with me, because the Covid year we all profusely supplemented on zinc was also the time my skin turned visibly thinner and noticeably sagged on me. Copper supplements are hard to find. There is a little in spirulina, but not much. I also find that my friends who refuse HRT suffer way quicker skin deterioration than those who use it, so I suppose oestrogen must play a role too. There's a new wave of medical researchers, particularly women, who feel that oestrogen supplementation should start way earlier than menopause, for a list of reasons.
@isabelledetaillefer2726 I am 36 years old and have premature ovarian failure so I am beginning HRT. I'm really nervous my body is just going to fall apart and I'm not even the normal age. I wonder if you or anyone have any tips?
Still one of my favorite of Dr. Idriss's short videos is where she compared applying topical collagen creams to improve collagen production to slapping a chicken breast to your skin as a way to feed/satiate yourself, great visual 👏😂
Really appreciate a succinct video explaining how to have great skin! Thank you Ms Pillow!! There’s so much noise out there about skincare but this 20 minute video tells you pretty much everything you need to know 🙏
Collagen supplements work 100%, despite what my orthopedic said that they don't work for joints, it actually reduces my pain a lot. and despite what this video is saying I have noticed a huge difference in the way my aunt's face looked after she took a collagen supplement for a month.
Same! A quality collagen powder absolutely works. Been on it 8 months and love it. I started my 78 year old mother on it because she bruises terribly all over her arms and hands and it took forever to heal. She went from having black and purple bruises at all times to pretty much normal except for a few mild bruise on occasion. I see all these derms saying it doesn’t work but I feel it makes them nervous that we all are figuring out ways to stay youthful without lining their pockets
I have been using Vital Proteins collagen on and off for years. After about 3 months, my hair grows like crazy all over my body, my nails get super strong and my skin looks better. That is my experience.
I also noticed a difference but with one particular brand only. After watching this I went to check and they say it contains Type I and Type II in that particular supplement.
I see so many doctors (the one I work for included) that claims their products and procedures will give people a new skin. He’s so in love with money, that’s all he sees. Thank you for being honest and straightforward, we need more doctors like you. These treatments and skincare products definitely work, but there’s so much more to it!
In 2019, I found a study on collagen peptides for bone health called "Specific Collagen Peptides Improve Bone Mineral Density and Bone Markers in Postmenopausal Women-A Randomized Controlled Study". I located the German manufacturer of the product Fortibone (from cow skin.... types 1 & 3). After a year of consuming the US product that contains it, I noticed that my hooded eye was less hooded. I was also using skin care products. As of now, my hooded eye has improved further.
@@charlottemoore9467 In 2019, the only source I could find for Gelitta Fortibone in the US was ‘Design for Health Whole Body Collagen’. At that time, one scoop contained 5g Fortibone, 2.5g Verasol and 5g Fortigel collagen peptides, ALL containing type 1 & 3 collagen. Since there is no type 2 collagen in this product, I knew that the “Whole Body” description was not accurate. While I cannot give anyone a RETAIL product recommendation, another board certified dermatologist has posted a recent 3 part discussion of collagen peptides for skin health as an adjunct to Diet and Lifestyle behaviors. She recommends diet and lifestyle as the primary intervention. In part 2 of the 3 part series, she discusses some products that contain Gelitta Verasol (No I have not looked for research on Verasol so you will have to find and read the research for yourself). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A3jsx_wzQIg.html . If you do not eat right, get good sleep, get good exercise, use sun protection, etc, as Dr Idriss says, no supplement will save your skin.
Just to drive home the point about sun damage: I was bedridden for the better part of 10+ years, from around age 15-25 and even spending most of my late 20’s inside as well. I’ll be 38 next week and most people I encounter can’t believe my age because I have very little sun damage. I’m also very religious about sunscreen as melanoma runs in my family and I want to make sure I keep my skin as healthy as possible! Thank you for all the great tips. I also have Ehler’s-Danlos Syndrome and have been doing a lot of research into collagen depletion and supplementation. I’d be interested to know more about the different types of collagen from a dermatological standpoint.
You look gorgeous! I was bedridden somewhat from a back issue in my late 20s. I know a bit how you feel. I have IBS and wonder about my collagen. I don’t really care if I show my age anymore. I’m thinking of how to get lovely mouth like her! I just am scared of toxic fillers.
Sincerely I use collagen supplements for some 20 years, initially was just for my hair . I saw great results and I continue to use it for some months in the year . Now I’m 50 years old in menopause and I look still like I was 30 . I don’t smoke
@@sophrosynemind I am not denying it, I've just never seen any 50 year old (without the use of faceapp) that looks 30! Lol! Hormones just don't allow that. 😉
@@andjelabacic5186only approximately 10% of women use HRT, so yeah most women in their 50’s probably do look old because their estrogen has gone to zero.
Love your videos! I’ve been taking the ProCap Labs marine collagen peptides off and on for the past 15 years. I’m telling you it works and shows in my skin, hair and nails. I’m soon to be 54 and I easily pass for 35. Yes I take care of myself and use sunscreen everyday. Eat right, exercise, use sunscreen and take some supplements. Good basic skincare is critical.
Paleovalley grass fed bone broth protein did wonders for my skin. Several people noticed. High quality collagen products do work. The proofs in the pudding.
Hi Dr Idriss. Love the collagen information in your video. So many I know are promoting the edible collagens as the miracle booster. You’re always true to your followers sharing the science and not the hype!! 😘💜
This video was super helpful and comprehensive! Thank you so much. ❤️And good point about social media causing younger women to notice aging sooner. I’ve been noticing my lines since early twenties. 🙄
She is informed and realistic. Amazing and love all her info! I live in MD and would travel to be a client. I have been to so many who all have conflicting advice.
One of the. Best. Videos. Ever. Eat right!: What you do on the inside-you will reflect on the outside (and make it reasonable!) Plus. You are taking care of your body and mind and over all reduces stress and increases confidence...reducing stress ❤ Stay healthy beauties
Posted a day after my 25th birthday!! Was just looking into red light therapy and microneedling lol. And the point about looking at ourselves everyday is so true..
I’ll be 40 in November and countless times I’ve been asked if I’m 25!! I say it’s my skin type, staying hydrated, take my vitamins and that I work out regularly
Thank you for mentioning Ehlers Danlos Syndrome ❤ it does make our skin different. I also get fed of people trying to tell me thst collagen supplements will help me (especiallymy joints dislocating), when my body can't rebuild it correctly!

Loved this video, thank you!!! Regarding exercise I recently started with yoga, and while I am aware of the waste variety of yoga teachings and quality of such, I must say that when it is good it covers so much (resistance training, flexibility and balance, lymphatic drainage, blood flow getting better to all places thus also improving skin texture, relaxation and stress management) in just a 60-90 min session.
You should try incorporating resistance training as in weight lifting. Yoga is more for flexibility and relaxation so I do both. Weight lifting increases muscle and bone density and therefore collage production too
Another truly wonderful and educational skincare video from you doctor. I want to thank you for all the time you clearly put in pre and post production. I know those notes/script do not write themselves and for that we’re all very grateful. Have a wonderful week.
Hi doc, This is actually true for me. Before i thought putting expensive skin care will just be fine but after i changed my lifestyle, i ate more fruits had a good sleep routine and facial excersises along side my carefully picked skin care products i noticed changes in my skin and boosted my confidence when my friends noticed it too. So yeah you have to keep everything in balance! This is a great info for everyone who are really confused with so much advertisement such as myself who just wanted to have a better skin not perfect cause i know it doesnt exist but healthy enough as i age gracefully.
after having viewed this I was awaken that it seems you are telling the viewers to put an end on those buying pills/ collagen and just go for the natural way, with that thank you so much
Bone broth is easy to add to your diet by replacing regular broth or water in a pan to stop aromatics from burning. Little things like that are a great way to get a bit of it in your diet without having to worry about the taste. And FreakFlag makes some pretty tasty unique flavors like chicken tortilla soup which we use as the broth in our chicken tortilla stew ;)
LOVE this video! I'm the kind of skincare junkie that's obsessed with ingredient labels. I look up the back of everything. Its difficult to learn about the efficacy and uses for a lot of these ingredients by searching online so this is amazing. I can learn all of this stuff while doing my laundry! This collagen video is soooo helpful!!!😄👏👏
I love that u r talking about lifestyle and moderation coz we all need those reminders, especially in the environment we live in. Healthy balance :) Thank you for that !
Thank you for saying to look at your diet on a weekly view! As a nutritionist/RD, I’ve not met many doctors very well versed in nutrition (no offense! They legit do not give y’all enough classes on one of the most important health related topics!). Anyway it seems you really know your sh!t, same goes for your macro & micro nutrients to anybody who is reading this. Let’s just take biotin for example, if you are so obsessed with hitting your RDA of biotin every single day, as well as every other micro, nutrient and macro nutrient then you are going to drive yourself. Crazy! I will balance diet means having more of some things certain days and less on other days having a weekly view makes a lot more sense… Some of my clients, even like a more closer to a monthly view! not done watching the video, but super happy that you have made this video Dr. Idriss!! Wondering if eating your collagen is enough to get #3 & to truly support your joints
For sure! It was one of my major takeways from this video. That I don't need to drive myself crazy worrying about consuming every single superfood ever single day!
@@paperplayhouse seriously ! I was driving myself crazy writing down everything on a very large whiteboard in my kitchen before I learned about that! One of the reasons they say variety in the diet 😊
@@kittykat831I was glad she pointed that out also. It’s already a lot to live a super healthy life but to get it all daily…crazy. I have a balanced diet throughout the week and that’s the goal. I’m in my 50’s now and the changes are rapidly happening so finding more collagen sources is a goal
I’m going to school to be a dermatologist PA and your channel is my favorite! I’ve learned so much and hope I get to work in an office like yours one day
6:27 "Menopause is a B*tch." You said it, sister. Omg, I hate it so much. I didn't go through it until I was 54, and I almost INSTANTLY saw a change in my skin. If given the choice, I'd take having my "monthly" until the day I die, instead of the mean O' pause. Seriously. 😂
@Giraffe27 After my first son was born and the menses returned, I had NO warning or symptoms at all! It would just start out of nowhere! I was like a schoolgirl again in white pants terrified to be called to the chalkboard! 😂
It’s the no warning part that really got me. I struggled for years not putting it all together what was happening. I was too busy with life to slow down so I powered through all the symptoms. I feel I wrecked myself in my 40’s. Late40’s/Early 50’s the light bulb went off what was occurring and I’ve spent the last few years healing myself and figuring out my new normal. Not everyone goes through a tornado but some of us do. My daughter (in her 20’s) is well informed to watch for the warning signs someday.
can you do a video about PCOS? with the objective of helping the audience reduce the symptoms such as acne, hirsutism, skin issues, and hair loss/thinning. would be great to hear it from the perspective of a dermatologist.
or just more broadly, videos about hormonal skin and hair issues. doesn't have to be specifically about pcos. or just more videos about how to take care of skin and hair from inside the body, focused on prevention and root causes
I appreciate your sensible and professional advice. I think genetics are also an important factor in the aging process. I have berries and nuts every am and I’ve been juicing spinach, greens, celery and a citrus. Wow! Also take Collagen Type 1,2,3,5 and 10 for the joints and tendons. Had to wait 2 years for a new hip. Great video🙌🏻
That's a great point because I am a super fast healer and when I take collagen I see results the same day. Imagining that it is actually my own body reacting to it makes so much more sense!
Hi from Argentina! Google recommended me your video and it was a hit! Love you energy and your explanations -they're thorough but easy to understand! ❤
Can you do a more in depth video about Coenzyme Q10? I’ve been using Timeless Skin’s CoQ10 for almost a year now and I absolutely love it since my skin is on the sensitive side and can’t tolerate VitC well 😅
Your skin and how you explain everything in all of your videos are something I love. I am grateful for your kindness and positive energy in sharing your knowledge. 😊
Interesting comment regarding people being much more critical of their appearance due to social media. I was taught good skincare practices by my mother but in my younger years no one obsessed about their appearance the way they do today. It was a simpler time.
The entertainment industry, paps and beauty/gossip mags were bad enough for unrealistic expectations of beauty or aging and superficiality. Now it's like people pinch and zoom in on photos to pick people apart on social media. Then a public figure will get some procedure done and people will pick that apart, too. We're not very good to each other.
I'm weirdly excited about that EDS shout out. We have hEDS & vEDS in our family and I have eds. It's so exciting to see doctors who are knowledgeable about EDS! This is probably my new go to video for explaining to people why collagen creams won't fix my skin & why collagen supplements won't fix my vascular problems. People constantly try to tell me to take collagen so I end up having to explain that I take CoQ10, zinc, vitamin C, & quercetin under guidance from my cardiologist to try to lend support to my collagen.
I’ve given up on traditional drs helping with my EDS/Dysautonomia. Should I start Coq10? Sounds like it’s a good supplement. Want a good multivitamin that’s safe for MCAS. It’s overwhelming! Just started folic acid because of the MTHFR gene mutation. Learning all this on my own!
@cherrycoke3254 I'm not a doctor. However, I would imagine that so long as you have nothing/don't take meds for which it's contraindicated that it wouldn't hurt you. Obviously, be careful and have your epi nearby if you try it in case it triggers your mcas. I suggest getting bood work done to see if you're deficient before taking any vitamins. If you take electrolytes, monitor for symptoms of them being too high/low as that can quickly become a life-threatening emergency.
Dear Dr Idriss, thank you for your helpful videos. They are wonderful! I would love it if you would be a video on advising a skin care routine for post menopausal skin.
Dear Doctor, I greatly enjoyed this video through which I discovered you. The content is interesting, but I must comment on a particularly important point for me. For about 15 to 20 years, I have suffered from patellar osteoarthritis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea. Having noticed the limitations of the treatments offered, I decided to try some dietary supplements, including collagen. Several American doctors explain that hydrolyzed collagen peptides should be used, which I did. While I wanted to see if it had an impact on my dermatological diseases, I was surprised to find that nothing had happened to my skin. For me, it is therefore not dermatologically effective. On the other hand, I had a very big and pleasant surprise: after about two months of taking 10g of hydrolyzed collagen peptides daily, I notice that my knees are much better, to the point that it completely changes the way I bend my knees and get up. Now, my knees are 95% operational in almost all circumstances. To check if it was indeed due to the collagen or something else, I stopped taking collagen. After 2 to 3 months, my knees returned to their initial state, the one that has been causing me pain for 20 years. After reaching this low point, I started taking my daily 10g of collagen again. After about 1.5 months, the effects of the collagen are felt again, and now, my knees are 99% operational as I have maintained the collagen intake for over 6 months. I am a man, French, of Italian origin, I am 58 years old, I have been athletic and careful about my health always. This is my testimony. Thank you so much for your RU-vid channel and your educational approach .
Thank you for this video. As a pharmacist, I am often asked about collagen supplements that are readily available in the vitamin section. The information you presented gave me great information and talking points with my customers.
Love your videos. I have learned a lot about skincare since I started watching your videos and now I’m feeling much more confident in making decisions on what to apply to my skin that will actually work. I recently bought your eye cream depuffer and absolutely loved!
Yes and I've been in the skincare & beauty industry for 15 years and I'm constantly educating women on not falling into the traps, tricks, and trends of buzzword products. Collagen being a huge one! 100% there is not enough scientific research data from 3rd party sources not trying to sell you something that shows it's benefits outweigh the risks in the long term. Instead of jumping on the train, let's take a minute and discuss if this is the best choice.
I like the Saturday learning as Dr Shereene taught a lot of knowledge about our skin. I am focusing on anti-aging products and how to prevent sun damage as I love outdoor activity but I hate suntan.
I'm convinced that powdered collagen (I use grass fed organic collagen powder) most definitely works. I see differences in my skin, especially my hair and nails. I have been using it for over a year now, I have been supplementing zinc and copper also for about half a year now, good stuff indeed! ;-)
