Wind and fishing from the bank or boat is one thing that never ends thank goodness. The sooner you make friends the better. This is the same for fishing streams with fast or slow moving current. Casting across and downwind causes less overruns regardless of casting methods. All the recommendations Debo pointed out are excellent techniques. Wind makes water current this congregates the food chain and increases or decreases water temperatures, good or bad depending on the conditions. Fish seek comfort zones and food you can place a winning bet on this fact. Wind makes locating active fish easy. This makes using a Float and Fly rig from the bank a killer method. I use split-shot, circle hooks and small soft plastics or jigs. The wind and wave action trolls the lure along and wave action wiggles the lure. When the float starts moving up wind, stops or disappears, reel in the slack and set the hook. This method is used for catching big 20-pound Redfish and about any fish swimming in the Coastal salt flats and works for fishing ponds too. They just call it a Popping Float Rig. I use circle hooks because they never deep hook fish. It works so well and is so easy to learn, most anglers refuse to use it. I am not that pompous and surely not that stupid.
I've heard of redfish guys using that popping float thing. I don't know anything about catching redfish but it looks like a blast. We have freshwater drum up here and I know they pull like horses! Agreed, I'm not too proud to use any lures that work. Always appreciate your insight, Gizmo!
@@DEBOSFishing You can catch anything on that outfit Trout, Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Pike and whatever kind of fishes you want. Anglers in the UK use it fishing for giant Pike regularly fishing from shore. One old guy asked me to catch him some fresh trout. I said how many do you want. He said all you want to give me. After about 60, he didn’t want to eat any more. Granted they were stocked trout in a local lake and they were in there for people to catch and eat. I only did it for a month and none went to waste. It is just bobber fishing refined to a higher degree of proficiency. It also made him think twice about my angling skill levels. You can catch Big Bass and Musky using Suckers, or Shiners and a Balloon tied to your line and nothing else. Fishing is fishing and the way you do it just makes it more fun.
*THUMBS* Yes, Yes, Yes! Learning how to use the thumb is the single most important technique to master when using a baitcaster. And lemme say...I Hate Braid In The Wind. Hate it! It's not too bad with lures 1/2 oz. +, but anything less and the wind catches the braid and uses the limpness of it to create a sail. When braid catches on every little twig, scum, and leaf around the pond, it really causes all kinds of frustration. Another great point you made Debo was the rod action. I love my medium/heavy fast action setup....except in wind. I'll pick up my medium power moderate action instead. Gotta have the whip! LOL Great learning tips as always Debo! Keep shouting out your subs buddy; it makes our day!
Yeah, braid getting caught on stuff can definitely make me frown lol. Yes, if you've never used a limp crankbait rods it's crazy when you pick your first one up. The pleasure is all mine man. Shouting out the people who support me is the least I can do!
outstanding information Taking the Grandson out In the AM. 5 years old throwing Baitcasters I will save this video for him to watch. he listens to my instructions pretty well but being able to watch this any time he wants will help the info sink in
Debo, Thanks for the tips. I find not trying to throw a long cast and using the side arm cast are two very important factors to fishing in the wind. Setting up the reel properly especially if you change baits. When it is calm I can forget about resetting my reel when I change baits and get away with it. When it is windy sure backlash or loss of casting distance. Both will wake me up to resetting my reel. I loved the softer rod tip. Most baitcast rods are rather stiff in my opinion. I have spent a lot of time trying to find a true extra fast med/light rod that really loads up when tossing a 1/16 oz bait. Once I found one my casting changed. Another RU-vidr advocates don’t believe the manufacturers ratings. There is no standardization and sometimes people just lie.
Yeah, the different rod power can definitely help. That's 100% true. There is not an industry standard and it gets very confusing. One MH can feel completely different from another companies MH rod. Thanks for watching!
5:30 so THIS explains why those light action rods are so much better for those light crappie lures and etc. I never really understood why it mattered. Now I get it!
My biggest challenge fishing from the bank (other than finding a 5 foot piece of shoreline without trees) is when I hit a fence behind me on my back swing...never had to cut a birdsnest before that. Caught 3 that day though! Great video keep on keeping on!
Thank's for making videos like these. They are always super helpful. As a new user to baitcasters they have saved me a lot of time and money and have kept me from getting overly frustrated while learning.
Been using a baitcaster now for 3 months or so thanks to all your videos. One thing I have found is casting technique makes a huge difference. I've gotten pretty good with a baitcaster over the past few months, so I'll maybe get one backlash a weekend, and can generally whip my casts out there overhand, but was trying to cast near a lot of cover last weekend, so I had to cast in a weird way to avoid bushes all around me, which meant my cast was now short and jerky, which made me backlash like crazy.
Yes! You nailed it! Short and jerky casts with slack line can be a backlash heaven! I'm happy to hear that my videos have helped you out man! Thanks for watching 👊👊👊
Some great tips here! When I'm on my boat, I like to troll into the wind because I find it easier to control, but that means I inevitably am casting into the wind, as well.
Thank you!! Today - 20 kmh Wind, no problem! Go with the wind haha 😂. I'm a baitcast-beginner and the video is a big help. 4 hours fishing, 3 backflashs, it's realy ok! ❤
Finally, someone who bank fishes and the challenges that come with it. Thank you!! I pond fish and it is my therapy. I am a dink catcher! I am just happy they are biting. Your videos have taught me a lot. I used to use an underspin and am learning the baitcaster. I am progressing. I am across the Big Muddy in Illinois. Leanne Motley
Yeah, bank fishing has its trials and tribulations. Oh well, catching anything is better than sitting on the couch. Thanks for watching and good luck on the water!
I was just watching bass geek regarding fall bass lures, he included some footage from tacticalbassin, and he just made a reference to the Debo dink. You are famous!
Good tips man. Been watching your channel for a couple months. Playing catch-up on all your old videos lol. But I watched this specifically because I went fishing today and it was windy. Thanks again man. Your videos are also part of the reason I don’t suck with a bait caster anymore lol.
@@DEBOSFishing Haha I've been getting SKUNKED lately! But the casting practice was necessary. Thanks again I look forward to every video and I've been trying to catch up on all the old ones too. You're a great dude
Your video's and advise are a big help! I been learning more and more from your video's. I fished when I was younger and so much has changed over the years. I loved bass fishing when I was a teen now in my 40's I'm learning all over again.
Thanks for this video. This is as my first season using a baitcaster and I fish from the bank....still trying to master all the casts and your videos really help.
This is a great informative video about fishing in the wind . Have only seen videos on this subject that only covered maybe 2 or 3 of your points. This was so thorough-7 points. Thanks- I’m saving this one for future reference.
You forgot the beard on the stick figure, LoL! I’m always on a medium rod and I tighten the spool tensioner which I have found helps me in windy days and leave the brakes at about 1/4 of the way. I have gotten better at my baitcasters by all the info you’ve provided now and in the past. Thanks Debo.
Great tips brother i just had to respool after making the mistake of trying to throw harder into the wind . This video answered all my questions, thank you for teaching.
Off topic- I watched a video on line a few days ago and can't remember who did it. Anyway today I decided to drown a few minnows and catch some white perch (crappie). I had two spinning combos, one set up with 10# fluorocarbon and one with 8# mono. Both had the same hook, fished at the same depth, and were 5 to 10 feet apart depending on wind and the fish swimming with the hook. With the mono I missed a fish so I'll count that as one hook up. With the other I had 7 hook ups. Nice ones too. They run 10 to 12 inches or more in this lake. Anyway, there is no doubt that with all else being the same, the fluorocarbon made a HUGE difference. This is my first year to use fluorocarbon and so far I like it, well except the price.
Hey man thanks for the shout out totally appreciate it. I also appreciate the baitcaster lessons. I mentioned before I was ready to chuck mine when i started watching your videos. After just a couple I was sold. I am now getting pretty comfortable and looking at maybe buying another one.....or two.... It's Thanksgiving here in Canada this weekend so Happy Thanksgiving.
Was pretty windy for me today while out at a local pond. Didn’t catch anything but at least it wasn’t hot!!! 😎 Awesome tips by the way for casting into the wind! Appreciate you making this video! 👍👍
Great tip video again. Even as a fairly new sub I've gone back and watched several of your older tip videos. I fish a lot but always good to watch, you can always learn something new.
It cost a little distance, but until someone gets very comfortable with a bait caster, set it up where the thumb isn't needed. Then back off the brakes and start adding the thumb. Great video for all. I've been using a baitcaster for almost 40 years (ouch), and every so often one will blow up on me. Most of the time it's after I changed lures and haven't got things dialed back in.
@@DEBOSFishing I looking at new reels in the &150 - $250 range. Have you tried any 13 fishing? Right now it's down to Abu Revo STX, Shimano SLX DC, Curado DC, and Daiwa TATULA 150, or Lexa 400 Type-WN.
@@N5KDA I have the tatula 200 and like it. The revo sx that I have has been good, haven't used the STX. Haven't used the curado or Curado DC but I've heard a ton of good things about them.
Drawing was definitely the highlight of the video :) Love the humor too, "not that I've done that, just saying for a friend". Great video with some really good tips.
Great tutorial. Im still relatively new to baitcasters and windy days have been a thing nightmares are made of. There were a lot of things you mentioned that I wasn't necessarily paying attention to when I was casting so hopefully I can make those adjustments and actually have fun with the wind
Sorry bro, I watch all your videos and I love them. I just always forget to hit that thumbs up and comment. I need to start doing that now. I have seriously learned a lot from your videos! Awesome content keep bringing it!
Great advice 👌. Good time to be discussing this situation too. I learned something I wasn't aware of but I know now how to adjust it now. Great video Debo!👊
Yes, windy days are..... um, interesting. Then you throw in a kayak, and OMG. I've thought about naming my yak "pinwheel." But thanks for the refresher course, these are all things you've shown us over the last year, good advice as always. Now go get some sleep, morning's coming. 😊😎👍
Dude!! Why couldntbyou done video a few weeks ago. It would have helped me a lot on that windy I had. Well more tips to help me become and better bait caster user. Thank you sir. Plan on going out tomorrow afternoon on the old jon boat. Happy fishing brother.
Great tips ill have to try out i do the heavier lures and 20lb braid sidearming will be a big help thank you sir love your vids my son and girlfriend watch with me now too love you channel
Ya i even found out if you do backlash even if there is no wind you just throw one i try to still pull the line out so it falls into the water not sure if the water does anything but it seems to help when spooling it back on it doesnt knot. But thanks for the tips debo
Great video Debo. I spent two hours picking out backlashes and adjusting brakes (with a little bit of fishing thrown in) yesterday, so put this one out the day before yesterday next time, ok?
Tip# 8... When you get the backlash out, very real chance that there is a bass sitting near your lure just waiting for it to move. I've caught my share of bass on lipless crankbaits by yanking it straight up off the bottom after a backlash. Immediate strike.
Debo busting out the high tech graphic illustration software. It actually looked like a hand and a sharpie. Impressive! Woohoo, 2,298 viewer. Go me! I will watch this again when not so tired. Despite your awesome explanation I am thinking forget it, going back to a cane pole. G'nite. 👍👊🎣
@@DEBOSFishing Oh yeah brother. Had a pretty good fishing season. Boats all winterized and I'm sad now. LOL I love your videos man. Always tons of great info and the videos are very so pro looking. Miss ya man. Next year I will get me an Iowa license and come fish with ya brother. My moms and my wife's moms side of the family are both from Burlington so we get into that state often. PM me on the book of face sometime when spring gets here and we will make it happen.
Just saying for a friend. Haha. These r some great tips. Windy fishing isn't as fun or as easy, but can be very good fishing sometimes. Good set of tips. Thanks!
Nah, I'm just one piece of the puzzle. Ton of awesome channels out there. Watch and take stuff from all of them to find the things that help you. I certainly appreciate all of the folks, like you, who support my channel though man👊👊👊
Great stuff Debo. I'm always finding myself not paying attention to the wind and casting. And then it happens as your son is reeling in the bass while I picking out my reel! Lol thanks for the video
