From my own experiments I have found... - Although the car has USB outlets, these do not provide enough power for the X3 and so I need to power it from a cigarette lighter USB adapter giving *2.1A output* . Anything lower, and while the X3 will record for a while, it will cut out after ~10 or 15 mins. - I run with the *battery out* so as to give more cooling ... the internals of the camera and card have a vent via the empty battery compartment, BUT... if your cigarette lighter power goes off with the ignition, make sure to keep the ignition on, stop the recording, let the X3 do its stuff and complete saving the file, and only then turn the car off, otherwise the video file will be corrupt and unusable as the X3 will be instantly powered-off when you turn off the ignition - I find that while 360 gives _some_ additional benefit, seeing someone tailgating as an example is 'challenging' AND it massively contributes to overheating and the camera powering off (looking out the rear is a pretty small pic, even at 5.7K). I have therefore honed in on... - *single lens mode on 'FOV+' 'UltraWide'* ... gives that wider view - 10 min cycle ... but you can go up to 30m in 5m increments - *Frame rate of 25* (down from 30). 24 is an option ... see below - I can get away with 2.7K but it has on some occasions then cut out, so *1080 is 'safer'* for ensuring the camera doesn't cut out. Of course, high res = better seeing number plates, so 2.7K with 24fps might be an option These settings are all about reducing the work the cpu needs to do to compress and write the video file, plus reduces the amount of data being written which helps keep the card heat down. You can go full 5.7K/360 is you wish, but in my experience, don't expect to get more than 10 mins recording. I'm 'surprised' by the cool air trick as skiing with the X3 on a long 3m pole over my shoulder can still result in cut-out due to heat, and that is giving it a pretty good cold airflow, but it's not enough on longer runs let alone anything the length of a drive. Anyway, these are the settings I have found work 'reliably' ... the only qualification being 2.7K/25fps has on occasions cut off, albeit restarting a short while later. Hence 1080 or going to 24fps would seem 'safer' options. One final thought. Single lens mode directly saves mp4 video files meaning they are directly usable without needing to edit. Translated: The video files are easier to share with Police if ever required, without you needing to 'tamper' with the video evidence to create an mp4 output the Police can take and use as evidence. Final 'observation'. If you switch the camera on, then record, you get single lens, FOV+ etc. If you just press the record without first powering on, i.e. 'Quick Record', the camera seems to default fro a full 5.7K 360. From a trip where I was proving these settings, I have a mix for single lens mp3 files and 360 insv files. This might explain my single heat cut-out ... I had inadvertently 'Quick recorded' and so all the heat-reductions settings were ignored, I was recording in full 5.7K/360. A lesson 😲 This might explain my heat cut-out and mean 2.7K/25fps is fine. I did get to these settings by extending recording periods (or hours), cranking down to the best res without any cutouts. Today's cutout was probably 'user error'! But the lesson, don't 'Quick Record' by accident. Power on, then start recording 👍
I’m looking to buy x3 for my motorcycle riding, this is excellent video, speaking of the added value of being able to use in on my bike and in my car! Thank you 👍🏼
Great suggestions - 2 questions - I've never tried loop before - if I stop recording, then start again will the old "loop" be saved and a new loop started? For example - let's say I'm recording and someone gets into an accident in front of me, I stop recording in the hopes to save it, then start again - will my original loop that contained the accident still be saved? And 2 - does the Insta360 studio do that speed overlay if you have the GPS data?
Right on both. If you stop one loop to save something and start a new one, it'll keep the first one. And yes if you have a remote or it linked to your phone through the app, it'll add your speed and such.
actually i wish to know if it could behave like a normal dash cam, as in is there a mode where it will start recording soon as key power is on? that is by far the number 1 most important queston i have. having to press record every time, in reality means you will forget to press record the time you actually need it. other than that, while the loop record mode sounds cool, i wonder if it would do like a normal dash cam, take videos and save them in 5 mins intervals, and earse the oldest file and continue recording when the memory is full?
It won't start recording when you start the car, but in my experience, I got used to it within a couple days. I believe the camera won't START a recording if there isn't enough memory to hold that Loop setting. For example, if you tell it to record 4K 30 FPS for 20 minutes, it'll do the math and tell you there isn't enough memory to hold a 20 minute file. So you could then either delete old videos to make room, or shorten the loop recording to something that the card DOES have room for. Thanks for the questions!
@@TheDroneDad Hi. Thanks for the video, it's really helpful. You mention in the comment above that the camera may not start recording if there isn't enough space for the 30 minute requested recording. So are you saying that every time I stop for a coffee break I might need to delete the recording that I made before the coffee stop? How do I know if I need to delete the previous recording? Is it as simple as, when I hit 'record' when I re-enter the car, the camera simply will not start recording?
For something simple as going on for coffee I'd just let the camera keep recording. Otherwise, just keep a good sized SD card in it. Mine has MANY videos on it. And after a week or so, I take a couple minutes to delete the ones I don't need and save the ones I do into my computer. Then the card in the camera is ready to go again. Hope this helps.
So if it deletes footage at a certain point how will you ensure that when you get into an accident it didn’t delete the important piece of evidence? I’m confused
You set it to keep the most recent footage. You tell it how long of a block of time to keep. So if you get in an accident and have it set to 10 minutes, it'll keep the most recent 10 minutes including the crash, as long as you remember to stop the recording once you stop the car.
@@TheDroneDadso if you die or if you’re hurt and can’t stop it, you will lose it as it continues recording. Also I wish it could be set to start when it gets power, like when you turn the car on.
After I upgraded to the x4 I saw this video and started using the x3 as a suplimentary dashcam for uber. Coming from alot of other dedicated dashcams that is the one thing I wish it had. Most have crash detection that will lock the segment of video from being over written. Incase you aren't able to stop it for whatever reason it stays on the sd card. Maybe future iterations will consider dashcam use but for not being sold as a dashcam it does well. Great vids btw 👍
It was VERY dark when taking that footage. And it doesn't have a sensor that is GREAT at handling low light. In thr city, it does much better. But it does have it's limitations.
Can you mount the insat360 to the windshield... possibly, upside down if that makes sense? I am trying to avoid destroying the dash since it gets to be 115+ here in AZ.
Can I connect to the app and see a live feed of my surroundings without recording? I intend to solely use this a rear view/back up camera. How is the night time image quality?
honestly in this video I didnt turn low light stabilization on for the ace pro. For monitoring, you can use the app to monitor either a gopro or insta360 ace pro from the app, but if you dont change your camera sleep settings and time out without hitting record your camera will fall asleep and disconnect. True for all go pros and instas as far as i know
I got the insta360, but it performed extremely poorly for what I intended to use it for. I ended up getting a $70 Jansite mirror dash cam and the $40 upgraded rear camera from wolfbox. The technology on literally 100% of these dashcam is mediocre at best, simply because these companies are essentially the same. They are just rebrands of each other. They use the same parts, same connectors, same design, same functionalities etc.... My set up is just ok. It works well for exiting parking lots during both day and night. The rear camera covers more blind spot areas compared to the original mirror, but your eyes have to focus on the live feed every time you look at the mirror, and that's something you can never fully get used to. It bothers the eyes a lot I must say. You just turn the mirror off and on very quickly to use it just a rear view mirror, but the mirror visibility is very bad compared to the original mirror of the. For context, my doctor said my vision is pretty much perfect @@Metro_Gnome
You mean where it won't record sound? Can't do that, but when you export the video, you can just mute the exported file. But it won't auto power on from the USB. You'd need to actually turn it on manually. Thanks for the question!
Hi. Mine overheated on my motorbike. But according to other comments on here, if I remove the battery and connect the Insta360 to an external power supply so that it is 'charging', then it will not overheat. I'll have to test this theory at the weekend.
To save a spot, you would need to stop the recording. As far as I know, you can't "save" a spot in the recording and continue the recording. So once something happens you want to keep, stop that recording, and then start a new one.
thanks, I like your concise, no-words-wasted explanations 😊 I'm hoping to seamlessly switch an X360 between vehicles (including motorcycle and ebike), and you answered some of my major questions about how it'll work as a dashcam. Now can you direct me on getting a discount for the X4? 💸
Turn on X3, click on the bar on bottom of touchscreen in the bottom left corner, swipe over into you find "Loop recording" and select that, then click the bottom bar in the middle of the screen where you can select interval, resolution, and frame rate.
You mean where it can watch while the car is parked and you are away? Sadly, no. Unless you have a huge memory card in it and can record the whole time you're gone.
How long do you have it set for? The interval is the most confusing part to set up because it isn't in the "scroll wheel" setup the other options are. Yours may be stuck on MAX or something.
@@TheDroneDad I noticed that you use 5mins in your video, maybe I'll try that. You can also try to replicate my aforementioned set-up to see if you're able to replicate
Lower your settings and dim the display or at best have it shut off in 1 minute. A lower resolution will also help. Shut off gps and WiFi settings so it's not constantly trying to connect with your phone or tablet. The insta 360 is an awesome camera when set up properly ❤😊
