Definitely taught me a couple things today. Recently I was happy to find out I can zoom in and out of the photos by double tapping the screen; less wear on my buttons
Oh the function button!!! Dude yes. That's a game changer. Not a hidden feature by any means but having the APSC mode on a custom button is my most used feature probably. Especially when I'm using the Tamron 17-28 for that extra reach.
so helpful! just started out filming RU-vid videos with my Sony a6400 must say, Ive still not figured out everything 100% but this was absolutely helpful! thank you so much 🙌🏼
Nice Video, thanks. The most important one for me is missing. You can map a custom Button in a way that you can toggle between AF-Areas e.g. I have set my joystick press to toggle between AF-Wide and the medium field. It’s a true game changer for me.
@@dunnadidit It's actually more of a hack rather than a feature :D First you set your cam into the first AF Area you want to toggle between. For me it's AF Wide Then you register that AF Area in menu 7/14 "AF Area Regist". Next your map the function "Regist AF Area tggle" to a custom button. Now you set your AF Area to the second AF Area you use. For me that's "Lock on AF: Flexible Spot M". And that's it. Now you can switch between the two AF Areas with that custom button. As I only need to switch between these two anyway, I never have to go into that menu again. Oh and extra tip: Map that function to some custom button and additionaly map the "Focus Standard" to the joystick press. That way, you can center the spot AF quickly with a press of that button. Try it out and tell me what you think. Takes a bit to get used to but it's the best hidden feature so far for me.
Unfortunately, I don’t own every Sony alpha camera so I couldn’t test all the features but I’d guess that the 6100 has most of them except the full frame only features
Just read your IG post. Take your time to create what you like and when you do that. Because whenever you upload something, it's always a masterpiece! Take care! Much love.
Is there a way to playback only rated images? Shooting a lot of sports, and wifiing images at the end of the game it would help a lot if I could playback on the camera only the rated images. Thank you for the awesome video!!!!!
@@dunnadidit yes there is a way! Playback menu 3 (on the A7III), specify Image Jump Setting to Rating Only. You can use it to only select the rated images when choosing images to wifi to the phone.
Yep, you Dunn did it with this one. Picked up a couple of settings that l’m going to change right now! And I’ll check out your Function menu set up as well. 👍
TBH I did not know about those and the first one is not working on A7R2 (too old i guess). anyway, thaks a lot for the tips! btw, last time i wrote a comment i was about to take my vacation to Cuba. I hardly got my skin back home safe! OK now, quarantined but no symptoms :)
Will it stack the photos on the memory card when u look at your files? Sometimes it's really hard to tell what's one burst shot versus the next one when doing HDR
@@dunnadidit dude thanks for that video your tips really helped me out, I was wondering if you can make a video for a full day time laps!! because it was something I tried but couldn't get right.
@@dunnadidit you dont even need to put effort. just remember whats where. its not that hard tbh. its not even like youre memorizing for a test. youll be using it for things that you love
I ain’t a naysayer about anything. But... The reason you’re one of my instant watches is because you are real. Making it look like the shopping channel isn’t for me. I want it to be more of you. You are the news and the lights and music are the sparkle added later.
"that means these people didn't take the time to learn the ins and outs of these cameras." No it doesn't. If anything I know it intimately and that's why I hate it. If you do t know it youre probably like "ah this is fine" Your vid was lame.
one big hidden feature you didn't mention and surprisingly a lot of people don't even know about would be "smart device control" which turns a phone or tablet into a monitor so your able to wirelessly see what the camera is seeing, along with adjusting your settings and start/stop record or snap a photo from a distance. Really good way to save a couple of hundred on a monitor. Helps a lot for product photos being able to see more of what's in focus.
Hey Dunna, I personally use picture profiles for event photography. Many say they don’t effect raw photos but they do in a few ways. I use a custom cine gamma setting so that I have a deeper black in my lowlight shoots. Its‘s a great way to encounter ISO grain.
Sony Alpha menu is not the issue, stupid people don't want to look stupid so they blame it on the menu 🏃🏿♂️🏃🏿♂️🏃🏿♂️.. I came from canon and learn the alpha menu in an hour.
Dunna, I think the Sony menu system is not the best, but I also feel like people exaggerate a bit. This is from somebody that use to shoot Canon and Lumix. People just need to take the time to learn the new system and you're all set. Thanks for sharing these hidden features! Stay safe!
This highlights the exact problem with Sonys cameras though. Photographers shouldn't have to navigate overly complex or "hidden" menus. Cameras should get out of the way, be simple to use and let the photographer just work. Canon has this figured out, unfortunately, they don't have the specs many hybrid shooters need.
These kind of features deep in menus exist on every camera I’ve ever tried to use though. The top layer is simple enough but it can’t all be on the top layer. Canon, fuji, it’s all the same. I find the Sony menus super easy but I’m used to them. The same way canon users find canon menus easy.
The 'bright monitoring' (At least in my Sony A7III) just change the screen brightness. I did what you said, Manual focus, disable the Manual focus assist, photo mode... It doesn't change temporary the exposure
Did you do it in a dark area? I tried it once in a place where it wasn’t dark and I thought it wasn’t working but it estimates how bright it thinks you’ll need it so it doesn’t do anything when it’s not dark. But if it changes the screen brightness for you, you may have chosen the wrong function.
did you actually take a shot? it should shoot in the settings that are actually input as opposed to what youre seeing. like temporary night vision. i use the fuck out of this feature when shooting with flash in a dark room and im using a vintage lens that doesnt have auto focus
Bro, Is there any way to turn off the Auto Screen Sensor? Whenever I want to click macro shots and even If my finger comes in front of EVF, screen goes black. Its really annoying and I want to turn this off :-|
I didn't know about the first one since I've never owned a Sony full frame. I was vaguely aware of the others but learning what they actually do and how to make them work was great. Thanks!
@@dunnadidit btw dunna I really enjoy your videos... I live in Indonesia and I started to watch your channel when I was working in a cruise ship few years back... Back then I watch your review of sigma 16mm f1.4 and I bought that with sony a6500, and starting to touch the realm of Videos... Couple years later I kinda enjoyed it and then I made a decision to quit my job and opened my own studio back home... And guess what the competition is fierce and crazy at the same time... Let me tell you about my price for shooting wedding... For a photo package is $40 and you'll get the whole day worth of pic, and 80 edit and print photos For a cinematic package is $35 and you'll get a 5 min cinematic video... Anyway, yes the pricing is super low and crazy, but I'd like to say thank you, because even though I made only 10% that I used to make, but for once I really enjoyed making every penny that I made through something that I really love... Wedding Photography and videography have some kind of emotional value to me... I might not The best in my town, heck maybe I have lots of things to learn, but I'll be better... Also this corona case is getting crazy here, in case anything happen I just wanna say thanks... If I made it I hope someday I could be a RU-vidr like you. Wish you good luck, God Bless, and stay safe
I can't decide what camera should I buy. Fuji xt4 or Sony a6600? I know Fuji is probably better but I don't know if it's worth paying more. Or there is other camera worth buying
The main problem with the sony menu is not that there are so many tabs and pages, but that it seems to be designed to maximize the number of button presses. There are a lot of menu items that turn a feature on or off by first selecting the menu item and then navigate to the desired state and select it. This is clearly annoying if assign the function to a button, why not just toggle the state, and why doesn't the 1, 2, and 3 on the mode dial get applied automatically when you select it on the dial, just like M, P, A, S is applied directly without pressing any extra button Another problem is hidden modes resulting in surprising incompatibilities e.g. Animal AF doesn't work when tracking. When you hit such a mode the only thing you get is an error message. In a modern well-designed user interface you should get some help resolving the problem. E.g. a suggestion to use some non-tracking focus area. I would also suggest that they had different menu sets for video and for still images. That would reduce the number of choices in most cases. To make things worse Sony manuals and in-camera help text must be among the worst on the market. If you press the help button (the one marked as a delete button) over a menu item called e.g. XYZ. You often only get something like "This turns on the XYZ function" but forgets to tell the user what XYZ actually is or does. The same goes for the manual (printed or on the web). There are information on what functions are available but very little info on how to make use of them to get a good result. Sony A7r iv has a lot more functionality than e.g. Nikon D850 still the manual is significantly thinner not giving room for in-depth descriptions of best practice usage
Thanks for the detailed thoughts!! I have never really found the Sony menus too confusing but I started off with sony so that helps a lot and other brands feel confusing and convoluted to me 🤷🏻♂️ Every camera I’ve ever used has similar little shortcomings to what you’re mentioning but I won’t claim to have done a deep dive on all the different brands by any means so maybe there’s something out there that nails it.
@@dunnadidit Dunna Did It Even if you don't notice the Sony quirks so much if you start out with Sony and it has become your acquired taste, you still suffer from some bad usability decisions e.g. the button clickiness. You could also ponder upon why they have two menu tabs marked with a camera icon. Was it lack of imagination or if they just had a problem creating meaningful groups of items? In general, behavioral consistency is a problem with Sony cameras. E.g. why does the exposure mode wheel have a lock button (A7r iv) that you need to hold down to turn the wheel, while the exposure compensation wheel has a lock button that stays unlocked after pressing it. I would say that both locks should behave the same. Preferably the way the exposure compensation dial lock works. Why does under/overexposure indicated in the viewfinder with +/- 5 stops in automatic modes but only in +/- 2 stops in manual mode with two white dots beside the 0 to indicate bigger exposure deviations without telling if it's under or overexposure. One would expect it to work the same way regardless if you were in auto or manual. Another thing if you are in P, A, or S the shutter speed/aperture value is shown in the viewfinder, but if you go to M mode and turn on auto iso the iso value is not shown. Instead, the viewfinder just say "auto iso" (and the automatically selected iso value is only shown when you half-press the shutter release button. And why does the P, A, S, M on the mode dial get applied directly as you set them while the memory 1, 2, 3-setting need an additional button press to take effect. Yet another thing, if you can set focus point by touch, most people would expect that it should be possible to also navigate the menus by touch. As you point out many other brands have issues with many menu items to keep track of but few cameras have as many as Sony. In fact, Sony have so many menu items that you really would have wanted them to be searchable like you can do on Android phones, or why not make it possible to connect a blue tooth keyboard to fill out search dialogs. That way it would be much quicker to find what functions to assign to your configurable buttons. Speaking of keyboards, the 20 century way you enter copyright info really tells you that it is time for Sony to improve on their user interface to more conform to today's standards. (And again an example of too many button presses) Why should this be so hard, it should be a child's game compared to making near-flawless eye autofocus.
Usually I’m all for customizing everything specifically to my liking, but I still can’t make myself like the Sony menu and button layout. I think it needs a better “default” layout/setup that can then be customized if necessary. Custom function buttons are great, but when you want them to do different things depending on what mode you’re in, it can get annoying to try to remember it all. I’ve also found that some camera cages block 1 or 2 of the custom buttons, at least partially, making it even more cumbersome. Still a helpful video, I personally just like how my 5D Mark IV works as far as real buttons go, and as I swap between modes and photo/video infinitely more. Still a helpful video, I definitely didn’t know all of them 👍
It’s never really bugged me 🤷🏻♂️ but I understand the points people make about it too. I’m testing out a fuji for a review right now and I find it confusing as all hell!
Dunna Did I get there’s points to be made about it but the more you use ANY camera you have, the more efficient you become and those points become irrelevant. Gotta work with what you have, and if you can’t work with a modern Sony because of the menu, you gotta toughen up lol
Mind blown. I fully expected to know all of them, and knew almost none of them. I have worked in a camera store for 13 years and sold Sony since they came out with their first slr. I talk just about everyone I can into an a7 type camera. The Fn button thing I should have known. So much easier.
Mansoor Mughal - I think it was a gift from my mom quite a while ago. I LOVED Gumby when I was a kid so I think she bought it for me when she saw it. Not sure where she got it though.
Great knowledge. Thanks. I want to know about Sony A68 video recording features on manual settings. If I want manual speed and aperture, how can I use auto focus?
Nice ... I didn't know about the AWB lock feature. But I think it's not there in my A7m3. One feature Ialso use is the "Shot. Result preview" which I have assigned to the Ael button. When shooting with my Godox flash & Live view Display off, I use this for the ambient light exposure for fill flash photos
The manuals are no good, always go one to your cameras help - helpguide.sony.net/ . You can always stump a young Sony Rep and show/tell about sony playmemories camera apps www.playmemoriescameraapps.com/portal/ For A7, A,S, R and Mark2 models only, a lot of apps to place on the camera and take photos with. The main good one is Digital Filter and Digital Filter upgrade, It will take upto three shots of areas you pick each, area you select all the shot options you could pick on the camera from WB to SS to A to ISO ect... AND preview the shots as a single shot and do adjustments BEFORE sending to SD Card as a raw image. Sunrise/sets or just a landscape BUT without carrying a bunch of filters on a three day hike. Great for doing a Milky Way shot over a town that is bright bottom have not so bright with settings and upper with a longer brighter. It even has time lapse., star trails no need to carry a intervalometer , multiple shots combined into one, and many more apps Not on the Mark3 and above models. A selling point for my first camera A7S. All done on and in the camera most giving a RAW image to process.
Hey Dunna :) Is my camera broken, or, does the memory recall saved to SD card NOT bring back The My menu Settings and one more question if I could, when I turn of my 6400's sometimes I hear a clunk sound not every time but after its been turned for a day or more.. Hope thats not too much Love these cameras and just trying to understand.. thank you for all the videos
Hey... nice video! It was very helpful! The first hidden secret my camera didn't have... but you covered the point that a 6400 would not have that first secret... oh well... The others were also new to me! Thank you, and did the triple hit before coming down here to write a comment! )))
How about the feature that no one ever talks about where is the Sony camera focused while it is recording video... It seems that once you press record there’s no indication on where the camera is focused
If you’re tracking an object it will show you. Or if it detects a face. But other than that I don’t think I know any cameras that do that in movie mode 🤷🏻♂️
