1. Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do
The word of Forgiveness
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
- Luke 23:34
This first saying of Jesus on the cross is traditionally called "The Word of Forgiveness".
It is Jesus' prayer for forgiveness for the Roman soldiers who were crucifying him and all others who were involved in his crucifixion.
To err is human. To forgive is divine.
What human being could understand the thought of forgiveness in a face of such torment and torture.
We adore you, O Christ and we praise you, because by your holy Cross you have redeemed the world.
